Why should I bother? - 0 views

  •
"Why should students or teachers get excited about something that they do not appreciate? As long as an e-Portfolio is held up as an electronic CV or as a storage system for assessment of coursework no one is going to get inspired. As long as publications still suggest that an e-Portfolio can be held on a CD or flash drive we are still thinking 'old technologies'."

"E-portfolios are becoming increasingly popular in the vocational education and training (VET) sector as a tool to collate and demonstrate evidence of skills and achievements and assist in the RPL (recognition of prior learning) process. However, e-portfolios contain a significant amount of personal information about learners which needs to be managed well. "

Recommended be @kjarrett as a tool to develop ePortfolios. Could be an after school activity... I don't like the Flash. What happens when Flash gets replaced by HTML 5?

This portfolio, therefore, documents my 'life-work' particularly in the development of computing in education and, in particular, the inestimable benefits that the e-Portfolio has to offer at this time.

A recently produced research document makes encouraging reading- even if a lot of the interesting bits are embedded within masses of statistics and tables. However, although this document is about online learning we can extend its conclusions to the additional functionality that an e-Portfolio can provide.

A new approach to e-Portfolios - 0 views

  •
Quite simply, whatever the age, aptitude, ability, accessibility or attitude of the student, there is a set of eFolio templates with a variety of 'skins' for anyone. - I see this as an essential first step to 'ownership'. Without this sense of ownership there can be a classic syndrome of 'Why should I bother? or What's in it for me?'

2¢ Worth » The Next Killer App? - 0 views

  • And we are starting to feel that there is a new spirit for doing things differently.

It's not testing and ranking. It's collaboration and portfolios.
  • I’m wondering if the next killer app, at least for education, might be a highly innovation new eportfolio platform.

I was wondering if Google Wave is it.
  • It will be used all year long, not just at assessment time at the end of the year.

I really like VoiceThread for an ePortfolio platform, because we can turn a VoiceThread ePortfolio into a collaborative and attractive workspace very easily. What do you like?

I agree. I'm exploring VoiceThread as an ePortfolio platform. It's a very effective collaboration tool.

VoiceThread is definitely worth looking into. Give it a good look. A few days ago on Twitter there was a discussion about wikis. Based on that, I'd encourage you to look at Wet Paint wikis as well. They get good reviews for organization and navigation.

    > Voice Thread - I'm not very familiar with it - as a matter of fact there is little I am familiar with but that is changing. I've been playing around with WikiSpaces and believe it has real potential for ePortfolios - privacy, adaptability, potential for parent/peer/teacher review but won't know until school starts up and I can get it up and running. I do appreciate your input - now I'll need to familiarize myself more with VoiceThread. I'm intrigued.

Google Wave unifies Workspace and Showcase Portfolios « Community-based learning - 0 views

  •
Google Wave was just announced at the Google I/O conference, video here. At minute 27:00 to 31:00 you will see a segment with important implications for the conversation we have been having with Helen Barrett about Showcase vs Workspace ePortfolios. Our original, and her graphic. What seems to be important about Google Wave is the way it is a PLE and by adding new reviewers of some works, a showcase as well. This could address the challenge of making showcases which might have otherwise been an aftertthought to the actual work.
