Fox News: The No. 1 Name in Murder Fantasies - 0 views

This report is not new, it was published by FAIR two months ago. We thought it was important to republish it today, as it shows a pattern of recklessness at Fox News. Recklessness that contributed to Saturday's tragedy in Arizona. -- smg/RSN

t r u t h o u t | Do Not Pity the Democrats - 0 views

There are no longer any major institutions in American society, including the press, the educational system, the financial sector, labor unions, the arts, religious institutions and our dysfunctional political parties, which can be considered democratic. The intent, design and function of these institutions, controlled by corporate money, are to bolster the hierarchical and anti-democratic power of the corporate state. These institutions, often mouthing liberal values, abet and perpetuate mounting inequality. They operate increasingly in secrecy. They ignore suffering or sacrifice human lives for profit. They control and manipulate all levers of power and mass communication. They have muzzled the voices and concerns of citizens. They use entertainment, celebrity gossip and emotionally laden public-relations lies to seduce us into believing in a Disneyworld fantasy of democracy.

Wars Are Not Fought on Battlefields - 0 views

Truthout is publishing chapter eight of my new book "War Is A Lie." I should explain where it fits in the overall argument I've made. The book strives to make a comprehensive case against the very idea that there can ever be a good or just war, any more than there can be a good slavery or a just rape. While Americans often turn against particular wars after cheering for them, many people maintain the fantasy that there could be a really good or necessary war next month. This delusion helps to keep around what President Eisenhower 50 years ago this week called the military-industrial complex, which is itself a large source of pressure for more wars.

Our Fantasy Nation? - NYTimes.com - 0 views

It has among the lowest tax burdens of any major country: fewer than 2 percent of the people pay any taxes. Government is limited, so that burdensome regulations never kill jobs. This society embraces traditional religious values and a conservative sensibility. Nobody minds school prayer, same-sex marriage isn't imaginable, and criminals are never coddled. The budget priority is a strong military, the nation's most respected institution. When generals decide on a policy for, say, Afghanistan, politicians defer to them. Citizens are deeply patriotic, and nobody burns flags. So what is this Republican Eden, this Utopia? Why, it's Pakistan. The idea that journalists have no responsibility to the dissemination of helpful information is ridiculous to me. It certainly is not the media's job to accommodate misinformation and falsehoods. The presentation of facts is not a partisan issue. I can't help but wonder what ethics their willingness to peddle partisan bullshit supports.
