Cognitive Computing - 0 views

  •
"Rather than being programmed to anticipate every possible answer or action needed to perform a function or set of tasks, cognitive computing systems are trained using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms to sense, predict, infer and, in some ways, think." This source provides a method for the bottom-up approach to AI, which is letting the computer learn like an infant instead of teaching it how to respond to certain cases. Cognitive computing will most likely be mentioned in our project when we talk about the technological singularity. This article is trustworthy because it is written by IBM, one of the world innovators in technology and computing.

Technological Singularity - 0 views

"What happens when machines become smarter than humans? Humans steer the future not because we're the strongest or the fastest but because we're the smartest. When machines become smarter than humans, we'll be handing them the steering wheel. What promises-and perils-will these powerful machines present?" I found this source when looking for information on the "technological singularity" predicted to come by many of Kaku's interviewees. It is difficult to find legitimate sources on this topic, but I think this one is going to be helpful. The link is not to any of their specific articles, but there are many to be explored. I recommend at least skimming some of these articles, as they will give us a more specific idea of how such a singularity would happen.

A Day Made of Glass 2: Unpacked. The Story Behind Corning's Vision. (2012) - YouTube - 0 views

I feel this goes quite well with what we have been looking at for main topics. One part that I found particularly interesting was the medical section where the hologram and glass room was used. I feel that this video would be a good insight into future touch technology, computing in the medical field and augmented reality in the small girls field trip.

"We do know that whatever computing device we use will be far more powerful than the computers we use today by mid-century, just as today's machines greatly overshadow their predecessors." Using quantum computers could make computers faster and more powerful.

Taking Touchscreens to the Next Level - 0 views

  •
Touchscreen technology will expand beyond fingertips, evolving to incorporate artificial intelligence, light and even sound. This year's Computer Human Interface conference featured several new touchscreen inventions, as over 2,500 international researchers presented their work in Austin, Texas. Scientists and inventors showcased everything from medical to social networking and gaming-related touchscreen technologies, touching on a variety of intriguing directions that interfaces will take in the future.

How will computers evolve over the next 100 years? - 0 views

  •
"In this future, computers have become so small and pervasive that they are in practically everything." This source is useful because it goes with the prediction that we could have computing devices in everything. I will use this site to learn more about touch screen technology being integrated into all parts of our everyday lives. This source is reliable because it is similar to other predictions about future technology of the computer.

Future of Energy - Shell Global - 0 views

  •
"Energy is vital to our daily lives. It helps us produce food, fuel transport and power communication channels across the world. Over the coming decades, more people will gain access to energy and enjoy higher standards of living. But these developments could place greater pressure on our world's resources, such as energy, fresh water and food. At the same time, climate change remains a serious concern. At Shell, we use human ingenuity, innovation and technology to unlock the energy our customers need to power their lives in the years ahead, while aiming to limit our impact on the environment."

The future of wind energy - Planète Energies - 0 views

  •
"The Future of Wind Energy Wind energy is a clean, renewable way of producing electricity. If costs are brought down, its future looks assured as a complement to other electrical production technologies such as fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and solar energy. Much of its future development will undoubtedly be offshore."

Comes the smart pill - 0 views

  •
"Engineers at the University of Florida (USA) have created a housing that incorporates a tiny microchip and antenna and, after administration, warns that a patient has taken his medicine. According to Rizwan Bashirullah, creator of the invention, the smart pill could be very useful in patients who forget if you have taken medication, or just clueless and do not take it daily. The pill consists of a capsule containing a microchip and an antenna that is printed on its surface using non-toxic ink of silver nanoparticles . The antenna is biocompatible and dissolves almost 100%. When the pill is swallowed, the microchip is communicated to a small external electronic device (which could be incorporated into future mobile phone), which in turn sends a message to a phone or a computer, informing both the patient and the doctors and family members if necessary. According to the American Heart Association, the main problem in treating illness today is that no medical requirements are met . Recent studies show that chronically ill patients only take half of the pills prescribed . And that 10% of hospital admissions due to this lack of consistency. Even 218,000 deaths annually are attributed to this problem. "Using technology to remedy may be a good idea," says Bashirullah."

5 tech trends that will affect the way you practice medicine in 2013 | Medical Economics - 0 views

  •
"Smartphones, iPads, mobile health (mHealth) apps, remote monitoring devices, cloud-based computing, and other technologic advances are continuing to rewrite the script for healthcare delivery for both patients and physicians, so much so that Forbes already has declared 2013 as the year of digital health. Consider that 60% of physicians accessed health content online using their mobile phones, and 44% turned to tablet computers, according to the 2012 comScore Physician Mobile Survey."

How artificial intelligence is shaping the future of Facebook | The Verge - 0 views

  •
"Earnings calls are usually meant to do little more than reassure investors - but in Facebook's most recent call, the day before Halloween, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled something unexpected. Facebook had formed an Artificial Intelligence group, Zuckerberg announced, and the company was acquiring a machine-translation company and hiring the best academic minds in the field. The goal, he told investors, was "to do world-class artificial intelligence research using all of the knowledge that people have shared on Facebook." He teased new products that would be more natural to interact with, and could solve problems beyond the reach of current technology. For anyone on the call, the point was clear: the future of Facebook would be powered by AI."

Nanotechnology Introduction - 0 views

  •
"The term "nanotechnology" has evolved over the years via terminology drift to mean "anything smaller than microtechnology," such as nano powders, and other things that are nanoscale in size, but not referring to mechanisms that have been purposefully built from nanoscale components. See our "Current Uses" page for examples. This evolved version of the term is more properly labeled "nanoscale bulk technology," while the original meaning is now more properly labeled "molecular nanotechnology" (MNT), or "nanoscale engineering," or "molecular mechanics," or "molecular machine systems," or "molecular manufacturing." Recently, the Foresight Institute has suggested an alternate term to represent the original meaning of nanotechnology"
