Alliance Healthcare UK has appointed Paula Sutherland as sales director to lead its sales teams in delivering products and services to community pharmacies. In her new role, Paula will focus on ensuring that the company's offerings align with the unique needs of pharmacies and their patients. Since joining Alliance Healthcare in 2012, Paula has held various leadership roles that have focused on building strong relationships with community pharmacies, manufacturer partners, and hospital services. Her extensive experience is expected to further strengthen the company's partnerships with community pharmacies. Before joining Alliance Healthcare, Paula gained valuable experience in commercial roles within the fast-moving consumer goods sector, at companies such as Perrigo UK and global supply-chain logistics company CHEP.

Thorrun Govind, a former chair of the English Pharmacy Board of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, has joined Brabners' regulatory & professional conduct team. PAGB, the consumer healthcare association, has launched a new eLearning platform, open to both members and non-members, offering a comprehensive range of online training and development resources for the consumer healthcare industry. Launched at the end of 2024, the eLearning platform was initially exclusive to PAGB members. It has now been expanded to include non-members, along with the addition of new content and courses. Fully integrated with PAGB's website, the eLearning platform provides a variety of on-demand training courses and webinar recordings, complementing the association's year-round schedule of workshops and events. From Essentials courses that cover foundational topics such as UK medicines regulations, to Deep Dive courses offering in-depth knowledge on specific areas like CBD and novel food, the eLearning content is designed to support users' professional development and expertise. Additionally, the platform offers a collection of webinar recordings from past events, offering insights into various areas of consumer healthcare and PAGB membership. These recordings are currently exclusive to PAGB members.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published a new diagnostic guidance to enhance CYP2C19 genotype testing to guide clopidogrel use for patients who have suffered an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. Published in July, the diagnostic guidance also emphasised the vital role of pharmacists and pharmacies in the implementation of CYP2C19 genotype testing used to guide prescribed antiplatelet medication. According to the NICE guidance, pharmacists with their expertise in pharmacogenomics and patient medication management, will be integral in interpreting test results and recommending appropriate antiplatelet therapy. It also highlighted the need for close collaboration with other healthcare professionals to ensure effective implementation across various care settings for stroke patients. The annual UK-wide public awareness campaign, Ask Your Pharmacist Week, organised by the National Pharmacy Association (NPA), has begun today (4 November). The campaign theme, "Professional and Convenient Healthcare, from Your Local Pharmacy Team", aims to highlight the skills and knowledge of community pharmacists and the wider pharmacy team, and their track record of safely delivering clinical services. Furthermore, it emphasises that community pharmacists work closely with GPs and the rest of the local healthcare team to make sure patients get the best possible care. The central message of this year's campaign is: "Your local pharmacy team is highly skilled and well equipped to provide convenient clinical care, including treatment for common illnesses, as part of the wider local NHS team." Throughout the week, pharmacies across the country will promote their expertise and services, including NHS-supported treatments for common ailments.

Healthcare reform emerged as a cornerstone of the Labour Party's manifesto leading up to the recent general election. A standout pledge was the establishment of a Community Pharmacist Prescribing Service, aimed at granting pharmacists independent prescribing rights where clinically suitable. This initiative is seen as a positive step in addressing critical challenges within the National Health Service (NHS). Numark Chairman Harry McQuillan praised Labour's recognition of pharmacists' role in patient care through expanded prescribing rights. "Let's be honest, pharmacists are an underutilised resource within the healthcare system. We possess extensive training and expertise, yet our full potential hasn't always been acknowledged. "By harnessing pharmacists expanded prescribing rights, Labour is acknowledging our significant role in patient care. This initiative aims to recognise our skills and enhance patient care, ensuring quicker access to necessary treatments," he said. However, he pointed out that the concept requires further exploration, as the rights to prescribe are already granted through the recent change to undergraduate training that incorporates prescribing.

Community pharmacies played a crucial role in the Covid-19 vaccination programme, delivering over 42 million Covid-19 vaccinations. Nevertheless, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) believes that there are valuable lessons to be learned to improve the health service's response to future crises. The association highlighted key areas for improvement in its oral statement during the public hearings for Module 4 of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry-focusing on Vaccines and Therapeutics-on 15 January. Representing the NPA, legal representative Deirdre Domingo urged the Inquiry to consider the following points to optimise the delivery of future vaccination programmes. Pharmacy hub and spoke specialists, Centred Solutions, has further strengthened its team with a key new appointment as the company expands its business. Ashley Kilgas, formerly sales director at Alliance Healthcare, has joined the company's executive team as chief commercial officer. An expert in sales leadership and customer relations with vast experience working in the healthcare and pharmacy sector, Kilgas will be tasked with building a high-performing commercial team to drive value for customers. Having worked closely with Centred Solutions on previous projects, Ashley already has an in-depth knowledge of the business. The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) views the COVID vaccination programme as broadly successful, largely due to the efforts of healthcare workers and volunteers. However, it cited some areas that could be improved, notably the early involvement of community pharmacies in planning, operational challenges, and recognising the role of community pharmacy in addressing vaccine hesitancy and inequalities. Submitting its evidence to the Covid-19 Inquiry, the NPA highlighted that the community pharmacy should have been consulted and involved earlier in the planning process, considering their two years of experience and expertise in administering annual influenza vaccination programs and the reach and resources of the 14,000 community pharmacies across the UK. "Instead, community pharmacy was initially given a gap in service role, which failed to fully utilize their experience, expertise and resource," Lawyer Brian Stanton told the Inquiry on behalf of the NPA during the Module 4 Preliminary Hearing on 22 May.

May I be one of the last people to wish you a 'Happy New Year' The new year is traditionally a time to reflect on the year past and look forward to the new year and all the joys and challenges it will bring, possibly by making a resolution. However, the statistics do not bode well for your resolution lasting. Whether it is to improve your health/lose weight (the no.1 resolution) or performing better at work (3%), the Forbes Health/One Poll survey found that the average resolution lasts just 3.74 months. Only 8% of respondents tend to stick with their goals for one month, while 22% last two months, 22% last three months and 13% last four months. So that's nearly 2/3 gone by 4 months. I only mention this because at the tail end of 2024, I thought Pharmacy, or more specifically Pharmacy Representative bodies had taken an early resolution and decided to get along. I am passionate about Collaboration and am a member of the Institute for Collaborative Working (ICW) and have spoken on the topic at conferences, the Pharmacy Show, etc, and also written in this very magazine on the subject (see Volume 20 March 2024). I have also been pretty dismayed at the lack of collaboration at a representation level leading to headlines such as "Don't underestimate the power of unity" and "Sector disagreement over call for unity" coupled with some 99% of participating pharmacy owners saying they were willing to limit their services unless funding is improved.

Pharmacy First has demonstrated the enormous value of community pharmacy in providing accessible front-line care. However, pharmacists continue to face several challenges in delivering the service. "Pharmacy First is a success, but it needs proper support to reach its full potential," said Numark chairman Harry McQuillan. In the first year alone, community pharmacies in England delivered an incredible 2 million consultations, highlighting the vital role pharmacists and their teams play in supporting the NHS. "This significant number shows the high demand for accessible healthcare and the trust patients place in their local pharmacy teams. It's clear that when empowered, community pharmacy delivers," McQuillan told Pharmacy Business. Key challenges in providing the service While Numark members have embraced Pharmacy First, McQuillan pointed out several challenges that persist: "Workforce capacity continues to be a concern, with patient demand sometimes outpacing available resources. "The administrative burden, particularly around IT interoperability, data capture, and reimbursement processes, adds complexity." "Additionally, some geographical areas are still struggling with public awareness, meaning more work is needed to ensure patients understand when and how they can access Pharmacy First."

Indian pharmaceutical company Glenmark Life Sciences (GLS) has rebranded as Alivus Life Sciences, following its acquisition by consumer goods holding conglomerate Nirma Limited. It is a leading developer and manufacturer of select, high-value, non-commoditized, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in chronic therapeutic areas such as cardiovascular disease, central nervous system disease, pain management and diabetes. In March 2024, Nirma Limited, headquartered in Ahmedabad, India, acquired a 75 per cent majority stake in Glenmark Life Sciences, becoming the new promoter of the company. The pharmaceutical company has described the rebranding to Alivus Life Sciences as "an exciting new chapter" in its journey. In a press release, the company explained: "The change is reflective of the company's evolving vision aimed at further strengthening its global presence and a commitment to providing innovative solutions in the API and contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) space.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has on Friday approved leniolisib phosphate (Joenja) to treat a rare immune disease known as activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase delta syndrome or APDS in adults and adolescents aged 12-years-old and older who weigh 45kg or more. The medicine was approved via a fast-track approval process for medicines, known as the International Recognition Procedure (IRP), which allows the MHRA to consider the expertise and decision-making of trusted regulatory partners for the benefit of UK patients. The decision follows an approval for the drug by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This is the first time the MHRA has approved a new medicine following FDA approval. The MHRA said it considered the assessment made by the US regulator as part of its own review, facilitating a rapid approval process. APDS is an inherited disorder where the patient is unable to fight infections because the immune system does not work properly. The main symptoms usually occur in the first two years of life and include repeated lung infections and a failure to grow and develop normally.

This collaboration aims to address the increasing pressure on community pharmacies and hospitals to enhance patient safety and meet strict regulatory standards while improving operational efficiency. By combining Omnicell's extensive expertise with Gollmann's innovative technology, the partnership intends to streamline real-time medication dispensing and loading activities, thereby delivering improved workflows and outcomes. Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA), the parent company of Boots UK, has announced its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2025, reporting sales growth across all business segments. Total sales for the quarter reached $39.5 billion (approximately £32.39 billion), marking a 7.5 per cent increase from the year-ago quarter, with a 6.9 per cent rise on a constant currency basis. The International segment contributed approximately £5.25 billion ($6.4 billion) in sales, reflecting a 10.2 per cent increase compared to the prior year, driven by a 3.6 per cent favorable currency impact. On a constant currency basis, sales grew 6.5 per cent, with Boots UK reporting a 4.5 per cent rise in sales. Its German wholesale business experienced strong growth of 11 per cent.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is set for two major leadership transitions, four years after its establishment. Dame Jenny Harries has announced she will step down as UKHSA chief executive in early summer. Meanwhile, UKHSA's chief scientific officer, Professor Isabel Oliver, has been appointed chief medical officer for Wales, succeeding Sir Frank Atherton following his retirement. Appointed in April 2021 as UKHSA's first chief executive, Dame Jenny played a pivotal role in creating the agency during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under her leadership, UKHSA developed specialist scientific, data, and operational expertise to safeguard the public from infectious diseases and other health threats. Reflecting on her tenure, Dame Jenny expressed immense pride in UKHSA's early achievements.

The Community Pharmacy Walk-In Consultation Service (WICS), offering treatment for various minor ailments, recorded 19,567 consultations in 2024. This marks a 61 per cent increase compared to the 12,138 consultations recorded in 2023, according to data released by Community Pharmacy Cornwall (CPC) and obtained by The Pharmaceutical Journal. Launched in community pharmacies across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in January 2021, the minor ailment scheme is commissioned by the NHS and CPC. It enables locally accredited community pharmacists to supply prescription-only-medicines (POMs) for the treatment of several common conditions utilising patient group directions (PGDs) that Pharmacy First does not currently cover. These include vaginal candidiasis (vaginal thrush), dermatitis, migraine, conjunctivitis, and emergency hormonal contraception. Since its launch, the service has facilitated over 38,000 consultations, with 80 per cent of them resulting in advice or treatment that concluded the consultation in the pharmacy. WICS data also indicates that the service has helped avoid an estimated 30,000 GP appointments and more than 500 inappropriate A&E visits since its inception.
