So you have a research assignment. Do you know where to begin? There is so much information out there on the web that it can be hard to know where to start and what path to take through the 'jungle of information'. The Research Safari is designed to help you do just that. Follow the information / inquiry process described here to help you work through your research task. There are also lots of great resources, tools and information that will help give your assignment that WOW factor. The Research Safari will help you to answer the following questions: What am I actually being asked to do for my assignment? What do I already know about the topic? Where am I going to get the information I need? How do I know that the information is accurate or 'authentic' (not fake)? Which are the best websites to use? ​What is the best way for me to present my assignment? How can I make this the best assignment ever?

With that in mind, we formed the first storylining working group, which is open to anyone to join at any time. The group is led by Dr. Jason Crean and Mrs. Kristin Rademaker and meets once a month to maintain that open collaboration.  We are able to offer Professional Development Credits to participants with an open-door policy.    We began this project with 3 goals in mind: Train educators in three-dimensional learning, teaching, and coherent curricular design through sustained collaborative work and by both experiencing and doing it themselves;  Create coherent storylines, including embedded three-dimensional assessment pieces that will evolve over time through continuous feedback from pilot teachers; and most of all Share our work- for teachers, by teachers, for free-  with any stakeholders interested in making the fundamental shift towards a three-dimensional classroom. 

In this case study, students follow "Mr. Okoro" as he makes the long journey with his sick daughter "Ada" to seek medical attention at the nearest clinic in Enugu, Nigeria. It is the rainy season, and "Dr. Fabian" from the Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria has been called in to investigate a suspected outbreak of malaria. Students learn about the circumstances in Ada's background that may have led to her illness, and then adopt the perspective of Dr. Fabian as she investigates the outbreak. They consider the epidemiological triangle, the different stages of the Plasmodium parasite lifecycle and how it leads to malaria, and evaluate the broader societal factors and future implications of malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa. The case was designed for upper-level global health, public health, and human biology courses, but could also be adapted for general biology, health studies, infectious disease, and epidemiology courses.

FEBRUARY 20, 2015-A diverse group of experts from academia, industry and advocacy convened by a Georgetown researcher is offering recommendations to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) regarding how to address the overreliance of male cells and animals used in preclinical studies. The recommendations come as the federal research institution works to increase the inclusion of female animal models and achieve a balance in the use of male and female cells and animals in lab research.

In this case study, we'll follow the process of developing an edible vaccine for the hepatitis B virus and explore practical details of genetic engineering techniques.

The Underrepresentation Curriculum (URC) is a free, flexible curriculum for STEM instructors to teach about injustice and change the culture of STEM. Using tools such as data analysis, hypothesis creation, and investigation, students look critically at science through the lenses of equity and inclusion. By comparing the general population to similar data describing scientists, students can explore issues of social justice in STEM.
