iPad, therefore I am, and keeping a wired open mind - 3 views

  • students submit assignments and tests by email, and each subject has a web portal with homework, lesson plans and applications to download. They create multimedia slideshows, stop-motion animations and cartoons for projects, as well as traditional essays. Parents can track progress online and check the lesson plans, which Mr Cook said created accountability and transparency.

THE backpacks at Albert Park College look a little small. But then everything at the school, which is entering its second year, is a little different. Students helped design the bags and point out that they do not need many books. Nor any calculators, notebooks, atlases and diaries. Instead each student has what the principal calls an "electronic pencil box": an iPad.

"The iPad itself is a great device -- I love mine and it's changed the nature of computing on our couch. It is the ultimate in personal computing; it is not, as my wife and I have discovered, very good at being a shareable device"

Interesting iPad review. Good reason why kids need these tablet computers in the hands, not locked up in school labs or libraries.

I'm sure lots of teachers are wondering whether it's hype and what the true potential of these devices are as tools for learners. I've had my iPad for about 8 months now, so I've decided to share my reflections so far on what I like about the iPad, what potential I feel it offers for developing course books and course materials and some of the problems."

iPads @ school « Tim Kitchen's Blog - 2 views

  • The iPad is not the be all and end all, but it comes close.
  • I believe it won’t be long before we see iPads and equivalent replacing laptops and laptops replacing desktops in schools. The days of the traditional school computer laboratory are numbered.
  •
It is important to understand that an iPad is not a laptop replacement. It is also not a shared device, not really suited to a class set however it a wonderful personal asset for teachers and students in the classroom. I've been lucky to have had an iPad now since day 1 in Australia and I'm a big fan of them as a support for teaching and learning. I see the iPad and devices like them being essential companions for students and teachers in the near future.

Where are Personal Computers Headed? ~ Chris Pirillo - 2 views

  • as you look to the future of personal computing, it may not be about how many terabytes a drive can hold, or how many cores your processor has, but how connected you are to the web
  •
"Every technology pundit in the world has an opinion on where personal computers are headed. They use words like cloud and social to describe our online activity, an increasing amount of cores when asked about processors, and the word touch is thrown around more and more. All this aside, where are personal computers headed?"
