Interesting theory, but can you really train a Java developer in under 3 months? Great list of training services provided in this blog. excerpt: They're handing out Gutenberg printing presses out there: with services like Treehouse (http://goo.gl/MCeTL) and Codecademy (http://goo.gl/kw2j9) (and its expertly-timed year of code), countless university courses free online, Google Code University (http://goo.gl/IJeB), the warm embrace of Stack Overflow, in-person courses like Dev Bootcamp (http://goo.gl/RPPxi), summer camps for kids, even the promise of a one-day result with Decoded (http://goo.gl/I6wGD) (the six-minute abs of learning to code), and great organizations like CodeNow (http://goo.gl/n4IO7) reaching out to teach code in underserved communities. I'm sure I've left many out. Yahoo Could Be A Big Winner In The Battle For Developers - 0 views

  •
Last year Bartz vented to me about Yahoo's infrastructure problems - the company, she explained, was a compilation of fundamentally disconnected vertical silos, each with its own P&L, codebase, infrastructure, and culture. It was nearly impossible to roll out products that cut across, say, Mail, Homepage, Finance, IM, Search, and Flickr, because each instance required custom integration and coding. Yahoo was literally broken underneath, even as it looked consistent at the UI layer. Add in the issues of internationalization, and you went from nearly impossible to "not even worth considering." That mean stagnation, and on more than one axis. For one, it means it's very hard to find leverage between your internal resources, or to roll out new products that build on more than one stack. For another, it means it's next to impossible to open your company's resources up to third party developers (there's that word) who might want to add value to the ecosystem you've created.

Why a JavaScript hater thinks everyone needs to learn JavaScript in the next year - O'R... - 1 views

  • some extremely important game-changers: jQuery, JSON, Node.js, and HTML5.
  • .js has the potential to revolutionize web development. It is a framework for building high performance web applications: applications that can respond very quickly and efficiently to a high volume of incoming requests.
  • Google has started a revolution in JavaScript performance.
  • ...11 more annotations...
  • the number of JavaScript developers is huge.
  • HTML5 is about JavaScript
  • The power of HTML5 lies in what these tags allow you to create in JavaScript.
  • HTML5, then, isn't really a major advance in angle-bracket-based tagging; it's about enabling JavaScr
  • pt to do more powerful things
  • JavaScript has long been the workhorse for implementing dynamic features in HTML. But there have always been two problems: browser incompatibilities, and the awkwardness of working directly with the DOM. The JQuery library has elegantly solved both problems, and is the basis for modern client-side browser development.
  • The use of JavaScript has also exploded in databases.
  • document databases
  • for all three databases, a "document" means a JSON document, not a Word or Excel file.
  • JSON is really just a format for serializing JavaScript objects.
  • Web servers, rich web client libraries, HTML5, databases, even JavaScript-based languages: I see JavaScript everywhere.
  •
OK, this article gets my vote as the most important read of the year.  We all know that the the Web is the future of both computing and communications/connectivity.  But wha tis the future of the Web?  Uber coder Mike Loukides says it's JavaScript, and what a compelling case he builds.  This is a must read.  Key concepts are diigo highlighted :) excerpt: JavaScript has "grown up." I'm sure there are many JavaScript developers who would take issue with that judgement, and argue that JavaScript has been a capable, mature, and under-appreciated language all along. They may be right, though you can write any program in any complete programming language, including awful things like BASIC. What makes a language useful is some combination of the language's expressiveness and the libraries and tools available. JavaScript clearly passed the expressiveness barrier a long time ago, even if the ceremony required for creating objects is distasteful. But recently, we've seen some extremely important game-changers: jQuery, JSON, Node.js, and HTML5. JavaScript may have been a perfectly adequate language in the past, but these changes (and a few others that I'll point out) have made JavaScript a language that is essential for every developer to know. If there's one language you need to learn in the next year, it's JavaScript. Insightful comment: HTML5 is a JavaScript API, introducing new elements but significantly redefining ALL elements as objects or classes.  Elements can be expressed with tags.  Or, you can use DOM JavaScripting to create elements.

Chrome Developer Tools: Remote Debugging - Google Chrome Developer Tools - Google Code - 0 views

  •
Incredible.  I'm wondering if either Jason or florian has thought about using the Chrome JSON messaging layer to expose docx conversions to OTXML?  Essentially, when Florian breaks a .docx document, he only deals with the objects and how they are positioned (layout) on a page.  Once captured and described, these xObjects could then be converted to JSON.  The Chrome web client/ web server port (9222) could then, theoretically be used to observe the JSON xObjects?  Interesting. intro:  Under the hood, Chrome Developer Tools is a web application written in HTML, JavaScript and CSS. It has a special binding available at JavaScript runtime that allows interacting with chrome pages and instrumenting them. Interaction protocol consists of commands that are sent to the page and events that the page is generating. Although Chrome Developer Tools is the only client of this protocol, there are ways for third parties to bypass it and start instrumenting browser pages explicitly. We will describe the ways it could be done below. Contents Protocol Debugging over the wire Using debugger extension API

Hype - Features - 1 views

  •
Jonathan Deutsch and Ryan Nielsen left Apple late last year to join Y Combinator's accelerator program and help designers build animations in HTML5 as opposed to Flash. Friday, the two-man team is releasing Hype, the first product of their startup Tumult, on the Mac App Store. Hype, which sells for $29.99, uses WebKit to render pages and has been crafted so that anyone comfortable with using Keynote or PowerPoint can start building animations in HTML5, no code required. "It's pretty clear that HTML5 is the future of the web," says Deutsch. "It will, of course, run not only on desktop machines but also runs really well on any modern smartphone or tablet like the iPad. The problem is that there are no good designer apps for creating animated HTML5 like there are for Flash." Hype presents the user with a blank canvas with a timeline at the bottom. The user can then drag in images, video and text, arrange those elements and use keyframe-based animations to define where those pieces of content go.
