  • In reality, though, you’re not the star of the show. The audience is. It’s in their power to embrace — or reject — your ideas.

      Interesting viewpoint!
  • Most people listening to presentations tend to tune out after about 10 minutes,
    • jessicawoods8

I have heard teachers are the worst listeners so I can only imagine what the timeframe would be for professional development!
  • They glance at a slide just for a second to prompt them for the next piece of information," Gallo says. "And then they turn and deliver to audience. They know what's on the slide because they have practiced."

A presentation where the presenter really knows their material are the most engaging.

  • if your presentation visuals taken in the aggregate (e.g., your “PowerPoint deck”) can be perfectly and completely understood without your narration, then it begs the question: why are you there?
    • jessicawoods8

      Good question to remember!
  • First, make yourself cue cards. Don’t put them on the screen. Put them in your hand.

Another reminder to not put EVERY word on the PowerPoint slides.
  • Second, make slides that reinforce your words, not repeat them

  • The software was designed as a convenient way to display graphical information that would support the speaker and supplement the presentation.

These words stand out to me: support and supplement.
  • use no more than two-three different types of transition effects and do not place transition effects between all slides

Good to remember to use no more than 2-3 different types of transition effects.
  • Again, if it is included in the software, your audience has seen it a million times before.

Great point! I have seen some images or borders that are overused on PowerPoints!
  • You can give a good presentation without any images at all, but if you do use images in slides, try to keep these eleven tips in mind.

Imagining a presentation without visuals would have been crazy to think about before this class!
  • Here’s an “after” slide to illustrate:

This slide is great because it leaves me wanting to know more about the topic. I would really pay attention to the speaker because I would be intrigued by the visual!

  • What is the essence of your message? This is the ultimate question you need to ask yourself during the preparation of your presentation.
    • jessicawoods8

Great question to ask yourself before even beginning to put together a presentation.
  • What is the real purpose of your talk? Why is it that you were asked to speak? What does the audience expect? In your opinion, what are the most important parts of your topic for the audience to take away from your, say, 50-minute presentation?
    • jessicawoods8

Good questions to remember even before beginning the PowerPoint!
  • A data dump

I have been a part of many of these types of presentations during professional development.

  • If you took the time in the first step to outline your ideas and set them up in a logical fashion, then your thinking should be very clear.
    • jessicawoods8

I feel a presenter has a clear idea of where the presentation is going if they take the time to outline ideas beforehand.
  • The more you are on top of your material the less nervous you will be
    • jessicawoods8

I have learned this in my presentations! The more I rehearse, the more I know my topic and the better I feel during the presentation.

  • Stories are easy to remember for your audience
    • jessicawoods8

I agree! When a topic or new skill is presented with a story, I tend to remember it better!
  • What are their expectations of you?
    • jessicawoods8

What a great way to think about things! Instead of thinking about what I want to teach the audience, I can think about the expectations of the audience.
  • A data dump — all too common unfortunately — is when a presenter crams too much information into the talk without making the effort to make the information or data applicable to the members of the audience.
    • jessicawoods8

I have been in many presentations that felt like this! An audience wants to know the "why." I think it's important to include why the information is applicable to the audience.

  • It may be cool, but is it important or help your story in a very important way…or is it fluff?
    • jessicawoods8

I have been guilty of "adding fluff" to a presentation. I like the idea of asking yourself "so what?".

Thinking about what three things you would want your audience to remember is a great way to determine the central ideas!

Why Online Education Works | Cato Unbound - 1 views

  • I see three principle advantages to online education, 1) leverage, especially of the best teachers; 2) time savings; 3) individualized teaching and new technologies.
    • jessicawoods8

I have really enjoyed taking my classes online, however I do feel that there are downfalls, such as face to face communication. Technology has worked to improve this and forums are a great way to keep people connected.

50 Education Technology Tools Every Teacher Should Know About - Edudemic - 2 views

  • Pinterest: You can pin just about any image you find interesting on this site, but many teachers are using it as a place to collect great lesson plans, projects, and inspirational materials.
    • jessicawoods8

Pinterest has been a wonderful online tool for my classroom planning. I have found so many great organization, craft, management, and center ideas!
  • QR Codes: QR codes (or quick response codes) are showing up with greater frequency in education. If you’d like to get in on the trend, you’ll need a tool to create and manage the codes like Delivr and one to read codes, like any of those listed on this site.
    • jessicawoods8

I created a QR code last year and put it up during Back to School night. Hardly any of the parents knew what to do, so I'm hoping to include a short description so they know the purpose of scanning the code.

This is a great list and one I will refer back to often!
