      This is an interesting point on collaboration. The portfolios I've completed for courses it was more more of an individual project. I really like this - it creates a dialogue to process the learning.
  • There may also be a perception amongst students that the academic is ‘shirking’ their responsibilities by having students undertaking peer assessments. In this situation students may be reminded of the Graduate Student Attributes.

      I see this as a common argument for the high schooler. The article points out some great reasons why this is almost more productive for the student to understand and improve on their own assessment.

      All students can communicate - some elementary students are pretty blunt in their communication. Is there a level where this becomes more effective? Or is it more important to model the skills so students pick up on the process?

      Really like this concept. It could really add to the instructor's ahas of the assignment. It could also open up a dialogue between the instructor and student if there is a discrepancy between grading on certain criteria.

      This is an important concept to remember. I think many students are set in the mindset of school that learning is forgotten. Having the students be more involved might change the mindset that their opinions/thoughts do relate to what is being taught.
  • With this kind of descriptive feedback and collaboration, the teacher clarifies the goal for the student, provides specific information about where the student is in relation to meeting the criteria, and offers enough substantive information to allow the student an opportunity to identify ways to move learning forward.

      Constructive feedback is sometimes challenging for students. It needs to be helpful not hurtful is the phrase I try to repeat when we do utilize peer feedback. It is also interesting for me to see what kind of feedback they give each other. I can make adjustments or clarifications for future activities.

      This is one of the strongest using rubrics I can think of because it can guide students. I do think this could also be used a peer assessments to help even further achievement. If a peer can assess and give feedback according to the rubric that also can be a powerful tool.

  • The classroom is more disorganized, with one student working one way, another a different way—you get the picture. Students are more motivated to do projects than they would have been before. Yes, in the past, I might have said, ‘We’re doing a poster project, and you have to have six pictures on the poster and have this many facts. But I’ve come to the conclusion that the kids are much more motivated when I say, ‘Okay. Here’s a list of choices. Choose one. As long as you follow the steps in my rubric, you’re fine.’”

      This idea is always fascinated. I really like the idea of giving choices and having a rubric to follow. Options does increase the motivation, pick a method that inspires them and works for them in the learning process. I wonder how teachers get students to venture out and try new project ideas?

      This has to be a hard concept and skill to get right for the students. I often question what is the difference between finding a video that explains it or a screencast of my lesson. What other modes can be utilized? Been stuck at that stage for about 10 years.

      What we all probably strive to get to...but how? So many times I hear students question why don't you just lecture or give us the information. Good article talking about the evolution to a more personalized type of learning.

      This sounds like a way to help students keep track of resources they use frequently. Sounds along the lines of a curation tool that has the added benefit of being able to share with others, so collaboration can occur.

      This statement is 100% me. I've created Symbaloo, diigo, pinterest, etc... and never really go back to them for the educational aspects. I still stick to just bookmarking things. I understand the benefits of having a curation tool of some sort. What's the best way to introduce this concept and how to have students decide what type of digital dashboard works best for them? I wonder if the students are as digitally savvy as we perceive them to be when it comes to learning online.

      I'd love to see how we get students to this point. Organizing and managing all the sources they come across would be key in helping students with their executive functioning skills. What's the starting point for this if they've never had to be in charge of something like this before.

      This does tend to be the thought process however I feel that students are actually more engaged when we take away the technology. Without the technology they are more inclined to discuss, collaborate, and think about their work without just assuming what their "google search" search found is the only answer or for that matter the only correct answer.

      I feel this is something we should work on as a district or by building level to have some common expectations. Teachers could build on it with their own expectations but lets give them the foundation to start. I fell we missed the mark on this with our hybrid students and even our online students who are working through online courses from an outside vendor.

      Although helpful to understand some of what the students are experiencing. It could be a struggle if you are a frequent online student and are "use" to the structure on online course it's easy to forget what it feels like to be a new online learner. Also, adults sometimes learn different than students.
