This article describes an Android application called "Doctors On-Demand." This particular app is available in the United States, but I know of similar apps for Canada. The general idea is that instead of going to a doctor with a concern, patients can have a virtual, online appointment with a licensed physician. It sounds similar to a Skype-based appointment. Doctors on-demand can give medical advice, bill patients and accept insurance policies, give referrals to specialists, and even write simple prescriptions.

There are many benefits to this type of healthcare system. It makes sense that in today's digital age, an abundance of services, included healthcare, could be accessed via the Web. Virtual medical appointments can also benefit people mobility issues who may struggle to get into an office. Lastly, this type of appointment can benefit people with time issues. It could make healthcare more accessible to people who do not have the time to travel to and sit in a doctor's waiting room.

There are also potential drawbacks to this type of healthcare. For one, how can a doctor thoroughly examine a patient over the Internet? Couldn't this lead to an increase in misdiagnoses? Furthermore, how can a patient's vitals be tested? I think that even though this development in healthcare offers a lot of advantages, it cannot adequately replace face-to-face healthcare.
