This is a segment from This American Life entitled "I Got 99 Problems and a Pitch is One." In it, producer Alex Blumberg explains the concept of "freemium." It is essentially giving something away for free to a large group, so that a smaller portion of this group will buy something extra. In this case, his podcast are free, but listeners can buy merchandise if they want to. He states, "It basically means you make your stuff for free, and then you offer a little something extra that some percentage of your listeners will pay for. One time we did this on Planet Money, sold $600,000 worth of T-shirts." Through providing listeners with a free online radio podcast, Blumberg and colleagues were able to profit over a half million dollars from indirect t-shirt sales. I think that this notion of "freemium," is really interesting, as it provides a creative alternative to traditional copyright laws that resonate with today's current digital content environment. I would recommend listening!
