"It is designed to plug into the kind of switches that are widely available in the AT community and employed in many communication aids and environmental control devices. The adapter, which weighs just 6.9g is controlled through a switch that is connected with a 3.5mm minijack plug. The iOS device can be charged without disconnecting, and works with almost any voiceover enabled 'app' available from the Apple App Store. As Pererro is connected directly there is no Bluetooth battery drain, which is common with other devices.

"Communication applications (apps), designed to be used on an iPhone, iTouch or iPad (iDevices), fit different cognitive and learning profiles just like all programs and devices do. Today, most people use multiple devices to address their daily communication needs. The idea that ANY one device can (or should) "do the job" for individuals with communication needs no longer makes sense. "

"Created by the parent of a child with special needs, the MyTalk iPhone/iPod touch application is a practical, portable and affordable companion to traditional AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices. With MyTalk, you can easily create personal communication boards for both education and everyday use. From "My name is Michael" to "I would like to order a Big Mac," MyTalk enables those with expressive language challenges to share their likes, dislikes, desires and needs in common social settings via commonly accepted devices. It's Not About the Technology, or Is It? Realizing AAC Through Hard and Soft Technologi... - 1 views

  •
"So, is AAC about the technology or not? This paper presents a broad picture of technology as consisting of both hard and soft technologies. The article supports both types of technology as necessary for successful AAC implementation. For many individuals, hard technologies are necessary to support expressive communication. High-tech hard technologies have many options, but only a few fundamental principles, with truly unique new characteristics rarely being introduced. What does change, however, is the platform upon which the AAC devices are built. Originally, AAC devices were based on simple electronic circuits, then specialized computers, and, finally, general computers. Most recently, smart phones and pad computers have been used as the platform for AAC device functions. In this paper, I contend that it is not the technology that is critical; rather, it is our ability to take advantage of that technology for the benefit of people with complex communication needs."

Minspeak Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) Device, Core Vocabulary, Autism &... - 0 views

  •
"Minspeak is a way of representing language in a communication device. If you show people a picture of something simple, like an apple, they will naturally associate more than one idea with that picture. People usually say the most obvious idea first - "apple" - but then they start associating more ideas - "fruit," "red," "eat," "bite," and "hungry." Minspeak takes advantage of this natural tendency by using a small set of pictures to represent a large number of words in a communication device. "
