    The First Nations Development Institute believes that reclaiming control over local food systems is an important step toward ensuring the long-lasting health and economic well-being of Native people and communities. Native food-system control has the potential to increase food production, improve health and nutrition, and eliminate food insecurity in rural and reservation-based communities, while also promoting entrepreneurship and economic development.

    The Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition (SAFN) is pleased to invite students to submit papers in competition for the 2013 Christine Wilson Awards presented to outstanding undergraduate and graduate student research papers that examine topics within the perspectives in nutrition, food studies and anthropology. Papers may report on research undertaken in whole or in part by the author. Co -authored work is acceptable, provided that submitting student is first author. Papers must have as their primary focus an anthropological approach to the study of food and/or nutrition and must present original, empirical research; literature reviews are not eligible. Papers that propose a new conceptual framework or outline novel research designs or methodological approaches are especially welcome. Winners will be recognized and presented with an award at the 2013 AAA meeting in Chicago, IL and receive a year's membership in SAFN.

Food and Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate and Postgraduate Fellowship (NNF... - 0 views

    This grant program supports: (1) training students for Master's and doctoral degrees in food, agricultural and natural resource sciences, and; (2) Special International Study or Thesis/Dissertation Research Travel Allowances (IRTA) for eligible USDA NNF beneficiaries. Awards are specifically intended to support traineeship programs that engage outstanding students to pursue and complete their degrees in USDA mission areas. Applicants provide clarity about the philosophy of their graduate training, and relevance to USDA mission sciences, NIFA priorities and national science education policies and statistics. Applications are being solicited from institutions that confer a graduate degree in at least one of the following Targeted Expertise Shortage Areas: 1) animal and plant production; 2) forest resources; 3) agricultural educators and communicators; 4) agricultural management and economics; 5) food science and human nutrition; 6) sciences for agricultural biosecurity; and 7) training in integrative biosciences for sustainable food and agricultural systems.

    The University of South Alabama offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate research program sponsored by the National Science Foundation to work for 10 weeks over the summer semester in the area of "Structure and Function of Proteins".  Students accepted to the program must have a strong interest in basic research, and are expected to work full time in their projects under the direction of faculty advisors. Important Information Applicants must be US citizens or Permanent Residents (Green Card). Students must have completed one of the following courses or course sequences before the summer: Organic Chemistry sequence, Biochemistry sequence, Thermodynamics or Statics. All participants receive a stipend, free housing, food allowance and travel expenses. Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Neither the University of South Alabama nor the National Science Foundation can provide health insurance to participants in the program. All participants are fully responsible for their own health insurance coverage.     New Voices Fellowships are designed to bring more expert voices from Africa and other parts of the developing world into the global development discussion. The program, which is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, offers experts from the developing world a year-long program of media support, training, research, and writing under the guidance of experienced mentors and trainers that is designed to help them reach a broader global audience. Candidates for the twelve to fourteen fellowships awarded each year must be experts in a field related to global development, ranging from global health and food security to governance, education, and social entrepreneurship. Fellows also must be from a developing country and ideally work and live in their country of origin or another developing country.

    The Lemelson-MIT Student Prize is an invention competition that celebrates the inventiveness of tested prototypes created by college students currently enrolled in U.S. undergraduate and graduate programs. All applicants must be actively enrolled full-time students in a U.S. college or university in the Spring 2016 term to be eligible. Students apply to the competition as either: An undergraduate team comprised of two or more students on an undergraduate-founded and lead team from the same school with one invention An individual graduate student with at least two inventions. Students must have a tested prototype of an invention that fits into one of four categories: "Cure it!" - for tech-based inventions that can improve healthcare and quality of life. "Drive it!" - for tech-based inventions that can improve transportation. "Eat it!" - for tech-based inventions that can improve food and agriculture. "Use it!" - for tech-based inventions that can improve consumer devices. ("Use it!" is for tangible consumer product inventions where the end user is a retail customer who would purchase the product for use in their daily life.) Graduate students should choose a primary invention from their portfolio and select the category that best fits this primary invention. For Undergrad teams, the person submitting the application should be one of the undergraduate co-founders/leaders. The Initial Application requires: General Biographical Data including Team Member Listing for Undergrad Teams Invention Description (in non-technical terms) 5 slides of a slide deck presentation on your invention (PPT or PDF) Resume/CV (PDF upload) All eligible applicants meeting the Initial Application criteria will then be invited to complete a category-specific application ("Cure it!", "Drive it!", "Eat it!" or "Use it!") requiring additional materials within two weeks of submitting the Initial Application.

    The NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) program is designed to encourage the development and implementation of bold, new, and potentially transformative models for STEM graduate education training. The NRT program seeks proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master's and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers. The program is dedicated to effective training of STEM graduate students in high priority interdisciplinary research areas, through the use of a comprehensive traineeship model that is innovative, evidence-based, and aligned with changing workforce and research needs. For FY2018, proposals are requested in any interdisciplinary research theme of national priority, with special emphasis on two high priority areas: (1) Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) and (2) Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy, and Water Systems (INFEWS). HDR is expected to continue as a priority research area for FY2019 and FY2020 competitions, along with a new priority area to be announced in 2018.

    The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy South Africa of the U.S. Department of State announces an open competition for organizations to submit applications to carry out a program focused on strengthening existing ties and fostering new collaboration between U.S. and African universities. The Public A Priority Region: Project activities must take place in South Africa and the United States, and be directed at South African audiences/participants. Program Objectives: The goal of the University Partnerships Initiative (UPI) is to strengthen existing ties and foster new collaboration between U.S. and South African universities. Focus areas include promoting faculty and student exchanges, facilitating joint research, building administrative capacity, and creating public-private partnerships. Program proposals should address how relationships between institutions will be sustained after U.S. government funded efforts are concluded. Specific Program Objectives: - Promote U.S.-South Africa faculty and student exchanges, particularly the development of dual degree programs that have South Africans complete their studies in their home country and address South Africa's shortage of qualified academic staff. - Facilitate joint research, especially in agriculture, food security, and STEM. - Provide training and transfer skills in all aspects of university administration through subject-matter exchange programs. - Explore public-private partnerships, with an emphasis on commercialization, technology transfer, and job creation.

    Through the program, two grants of $25,000 will be awarded to graduate student researchers interested in exploring the gut microbiome, probiotics, and yogurt and how they help support and maintain human health and wellness. Topics may include the role that probiotics or yogurt play on brain function, growth and development, digestive health, weight management or heart health; and factors such as foods or nutrients that influence the gut microbiome.
