The mission of the American Association on Health and Disability is to contribute to national, state, and local efforts to promote health and wellness in people with disabilities and identify effective intervention strategies that reduce health disparities between people with disabilities and the general population. AAHD accomplishes its mission through research, education, and advocacy at the national, state, and community levels. To that end, the AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health and Disability is awarded annually to deserving students with a disability who are pursuing undergraduate/graduate studies (at least a sophomore in college) at an accredited university in an area related to health and disability, including but not limited to public health, health promotion, disability studies, disability research, rehabilitation engineering, audiology, disability policy, special education, or other majors that impact quality of life for persons with disabilities. Scholarships of up to $1,000 will be awarded in late January/early February 2019. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled full time as an undergraduate (freshman or beyond) or part or full time in graduate school, have a documented disability, and be able provide documentation of their disability. (Applicants who have not yet graduated from high school will not be considered.) In addition, applicants must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States enrolled in an accredited U.S. university. Preference will be given to students majoring in public health, disability studies, disability research, health promotion, or a field related to disability and health.

This notice solicits applications for Advancing Systems of Services for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs. The purpose of this program is to improve health and well-being for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and their families by addressing three core systems focus areas for CYSHCN-access to patient/family-centered medical home, transition of youth into the adult health care system, and adoption of health care financing models that improve care and outcomes while achieving cost savings. This program will establish a national collaborative network of resource centers supporting state Title V programs, families of CYSHCN, child health professionals, and other stakeholders through the provision of technical assistance, training, education, partnership building, policy analysis, and research. Program Goal: The overall goal of this program is to strengthen the system of services for CYSHCN and their families by awarding three separate and distinct cooperative agreements. Cooperative agreements will be awarded to three recipients, who will collaborate to establish a national network of resource centers, with one center awarded for each of the following three focus areas: (1) Patient/family-centered medical home; (2) Transition of youth into the adult health care system; and (3) Health care financing models that improve care and outcomes while achieving cost savings. The three recipients will coordinate efforts to achieve quality care, decrease health care costs, and improve experience of care for CYSHCN and their families. The purpose of NIDILRR's Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects (DRRP) which are funded through the Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects and Centers Program, is to plan and conduct research, demonstration projects, training, and related activities, including international activities, to develop methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technology that maximize the full inclusion and integration into society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with the most severe disabilities, and to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (Rehabilitation Act).Under this particular DRRP priority, applicants must propose a development project that is aimed at improving the health and function of individuals with disabilities. In carrying out a development project under this program, a grantee must use knowledge and understanding gained from research to create materials, devices, systems, or methods beneficial to the target population, including design and development of protypes and processes. The Milbank Foundation was created in 1995 to pursue Jeremiah Milbank's vision of integrating people with disabilities into all aspects of American life. The Foundation's current priorities include: - Consumer-oriented projects that enable people with disabilities to lead fulfilling, independent lives - Innovative policy research and education on market-based approaches to health care and rehabilitation - Improving and expanding quality health services, especially palliative care - Education and training of health and rehabilitation professionals

Purpose of Program: The purpose of the RERC program is to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act by conducting advanced engineering research on and development of innovative technologies that are designed to solve particular rehabilitation problems or to remove environmental barriers. RERCs also demonstrate and evaluate such technologies, facilitate service delivery system changes, stimulate the production and distribution of new technologies and equipment in the private sector, and provide training opportunities. NIDILRR seeks to fund an RERC on Technologies to Promote Exercise and Health Among People with Disabilities. This RERC must investigate access to exercise by people with disabilities in both recreational and clinical settings and evaluate the impact of exercise on health outcomes of people with disabilities.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites grant applications for research to examine the safety and efficacy of the inclusion of animals in therapy and rehabilitation for children and individuals with disabilities, neurological conditions, behavioral, emotional and mental health issues and related health outcomes, as well as the adaptation of healthy behaviors and the enhancement of learning in special need and at-risk populations.

Beginning in FY2015, Congress appropriated $1,000,000 for the WWSDP to fund a competitive grants program. This program continues in FY2018 under the authority of the Defense Health Program, Operations & Maintenance, therapeutic service dog training program. The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) is authorized by 10 U.S.C. 2113(g)(1)(A) to make grants to any nonprofit entity. Historically, USU has solicited grant applications from nonprofit institutions committed to connecting service dogs with service members and veterans. USU obligated $1,000,000 in FY2015, $5,000,000 in FY2016, and $5,000,000 in FY2017 to carry out this program. USU intends to award multiple, 12-month grants (subject to availability of funding) to eligible nonprofit organizations to continue this program in FY2018.

The purpose of the National Chronic Disease Self-Management Education (CDSME) Resource Center will be to provide leadership, expert guidance, and resources to promote the value of and increase access to evidence-based self-management programs; and to serve as a national clearinghouse and disseminate resources and best practices to increase the capacity of states, aging, disability and public health networks and their partners to implement and sustain CDSME programs.

The Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD) within the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) forecasts the possible availability of Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 funds to make five-year grants to up to forty- two entities designated as University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD). These grantees carry out four core functions: (1) interdisciplinary pre-service preparation and continuing education of students; (2) community services, including training, technical assistance, and/or demonstration and model activities; (3) research; and (4) dissemination of information. UCEDDs are interdisciplinary education, research and public service units of universities, or public or not-for-profit entities associated with universities that implement the four core functions addressing, directly or indirectly, one or more of the areas of emphasis (e.g., quality assurance, education and early intervention, child care, health, employment, housing, transportation, recreation and other services available or offered to individuals in a community, including formal and informal community supports, that affect their quality of life).

Of particular interest is research designed to maintain functional capabilities in such conditions as cardiac and respiratory insufficiency, movement impairment associated with arthritis, chronic back pain, stroke, and other physical or cognitive disabilities.

The Klingenstein Third Generation Foundation ("KTGF") funds programs in children's mental health, principally in the areas of childhood/adolescent depression and ADHD. It also funds medical student programs in child and adolescent psychiatry at select medical institutions. Through these programs, the KTGF seeks to further research in pediatric ADHD and pediatric depression, cultivate more child and adolescent psychiatrists and increase knowledge of mental health in physicians.

This announcement solicits applications for two (2) separate competitions, HRSA-17-013 Autism Field-Initiated Innovative Research Studies and HRSA-17-014 Autism Longitudinal Data Project.  The purpose of the Autism Field-Initiated Innovative Research Studies and the Autism Longitudinal Data Project competitions are to support the conduct of empirical research that advances the evidence base on interventions to improve the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), with a special focus on addressing the needs of underserved populations.  These competitions will address the critical need that exists for research on the barriers to screening, diagnosis, and receipt of evidence-based interventions.

The R40 MCH Autism Intervention Research Program supports applied empirical research studies to advance the evidence base on the effectiveness of interventions to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental disabilities (DD) and to advance best practices for the screening and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities at an earlier age. 

CHADD is now accepting applications for the 2014 Young Scientist Research Fund Awards.  The program recognizes researchers new to the ADHD field who are making contributions to the understanding of ADHD.  Through the Fund, CHADD supports researchers with: an unrestricted cash award of $5,000 each recognition at CHADD's Annual International Conference an allowance to cover most conference related expenses (travel, hotel, registration)  a one-year CHADD professional membership. Applicants must be in the process of completing a doctoral degree or must have completed such a degree within the last three years with the doctoral degree awarded no earlier than January 2011.  They must be involved in conducting research addressing an area of ADHD that will further understanding of the disorder.  Research may address any area relevant to ADHD, including, but not limited to: biological/genetic underpinnings of the disorder; treatment efficacy; impact on the individual or family; school or workplace accommodations; social stigma and discrimination; public health; and epidemiology.

Basic research collects foundational data used to develop or refine theories. Clinical or applied research tests theories that direct practice or have a direct effect on the persons in the activity or therapy. HHRF exists to fund and support research projects that measure quantitative or qualitative evidence for EAA/T.
