The Medici Archive Project (MAP) wishes to provide graduate and doctoral students from diverse disciplines with the opportunity to have exposure to original source materials and training in their use. For this reason MAP is offering five short-term fellowships sponsored by the SAMUEL FREEMAN CHARITABLE TRUST (SFCF) for graduate students in any field of the humanities or social sciences who are in the early stages of their dissertation work. The SFCF fellowships have been developed to enable students working on their dissertations to conduct primary research using the Mediceo del Principato and other collections housed in the Archivio di Stato in Florence. This scholarly residence will be of considerable benefit in helping the students to gain the necessary skills, experience and confidence to continue independent academic research in the later stages of their graduate trajectory. While undertaking primary research for their dissertation in the Florentine state archives, the Fellows will benefit from the supervision of the MAP Staff, academics drawn from a variety of disciplines who are experts in archival research, paleography and the digital humanities. The Fellows will also have the opportunity to expand their academic networks through contact with the many international scholars who regularly visit and collaborate with MAP. Finally, Fellows will be enrolled in the annual MAP Archival Studies Seminar. The fellowships last for an uninterrupted period of two-and-a-half months, taking place at any point between 1 January 2014 and 15 July 2014. The SFCT Fellows will undertake their dissertation research on-site in the Archivio di Stato. The candidates will have the following qualifications: a completed M.Phil (or equivalent) in any field of early modern humanities and fluency in English and Italian.

The Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching will support rising stars in the academy who love teaching, demonstrate excellence as educators, and are making their mark as exceptional researchers, poised to shape their fields. Designed for young scholars working towards tenure, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship is a "genius grant" that will emphasize the balance between scholarly excellence and commitment to teaching practice that draws on new approaches to pedagogy, creating a new level of engagement for students in and beyond the classroom. In short, Fellows will be emerging heroes in their fields, on a clear trajectory to become great college educators. In its inaugural year, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship will identify five outstanding junior faculty members. Fellows will receive a one-year grant of $40,000-approximately $30,000 to support the engagement of a student assistant and the balance to be used for research and travel support. Exceptional candidates teach in ways that build student confidence and mastery of a subject; encourage critical thinking; explore foundational concepts through the lens of broader themes and global events; promote the power of learning communities beyond the classroom; leverage technology to complement the classroom experience; consider and serve different learning styles; prepare students for lifelong learning; and can serve as replicable teaching models for other educators. Selection takes place in June 2018. The five Fellows will be invited to attend the Course Hero Education Summit in July 2018, where their Fellowships will be announced.

SSHM invites submissions to its 2014 SSHM Undergraduate Prize Competition. Up to 6 prizes will be awarded for the best unpublished original research essays in the social history of medicine. We will consider two groups of undergraduate students: humanities and social science students, and medical, healthcare and allied science students.

Mellon Foundation and the National Science Foundation (NSF #1661272). This is an important opportunity to deepen your institution's understanding of the career goals and outcomes of its PhDs; communicate your support for the career diversity of PhDs; make evidence-based interventions that support the success of PhDs and the recruitment of future students; and access anonymized benchmarking data compiled from other project partners.   Awards: Option 1: Humanities Only. Provides awards of $30,000 each to support implementation of surveys of humanities PhD students and alumni over a period of twenty-four months. Supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; 15 awards available. Please indicate in your proposal why a humanities-only project aligns with your institutional mission.   Option 2: STEM Only. Provides awards of $50,000 to each to support implementation of surveys of STEM PhD students and alumni over a period of thirty-six months. The Office of English Language Programs of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA/A/L) announces an open competition to administer the English Access Microscholarship Program (Access), which provides a foundation of English language skills to bright, economically disadvantaged students in their home countries. Access programs introduce students, primarily aged 13 to 20, to U.S. culture and democratic values, improve the students' potential to fully contribute to the socio-economic development of their countries, and increase their ability to compete for and participate in U.S. exchange and study programs.

The Tweedie Exploration Fellowships for Students, or Tweedie Fund, grants financial help for research projects taking place in lesser-known regions of the world. The fund only makes awards to students or other candidates who are not in career-level employment. There are several restrictions on applications to the Tweedie fund: Applicants must have a degree and appropriate experience for any research. Applicants must be unsalaried (i.e. not in career-level employment). Applicants should be looking to undertake ethnological, sociological or linguistic research in lesser-known regions of the world. Particular preference is given to research based in areas of Asia and Northern Africa. Archaeological excavations are specifically excluded from receiving money from the fund.

THE FELLOWSHIPS:  The American Research Institute in Turkey will offer ARIT fellowships for research in Turkey for the academic year 2014-2015.  Grants for tenures up to one academic year will be considered; some preference, however, is given to projects of shorter duration.  ARIT operates hostel, research, and study facilities for researchers in Turkey at its branch centers in Istanbul and Ankara. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:  Scholars and advanced graduate students engaged in research on ancient, medieval, or modern times in Turkey, in any field of the humanities and social sciences, are eligible to apply.  Student applicants must have fulfilled all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation by June 2014, and before beginning any ARIT-sponsored research.  Non-U.S. applicants who reside in the U.S. or Canada are expected to maintain an affiliation with an educational institution in the U.S. or Canada.   Scholars who have completed their formal training may also apply for ARIT fellowships sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  For questions of eligibility, please check with the ARIT office in Philadelphia. 

NIJ is seeking proposals for funding innovative dissertation research under the NIJ Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) Program that provides awards for research on crime, violence, and other criminal justice-related topics to accredited academic institutions that offer research-based doctoral degrees in social and behavioral academic disciplines relevant to NIJ's mission. NIJ invests in doctoral education by supporting universities that sponsor students who demonstrate the potential to successfully complete doctoral degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of NIJ and who are in the final stages of graduate study. Applicants sponsoring doctoral students are eligible to apply only if the doctoral research dissertation has direct relevance to providing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to better prevent and control crime and ensure the fair and impartial administration of criminal justice in the United States.

Bringing Theory to Practice Project, an independent project established by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, is accepting proposals from universities and colleges in the United States for projects aimed promoting the nexus of engaged learning, civic engagement, and psychosocial well-being among college and university students. Seminar grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded for projects that bring together diverse members of the campus community to discuss the civic mission of the institution and how the full expression of that mission can be achieved. Proposals will be accepted on a quarterly-deadline system (June 15, September 15, December 15, and March 15), with awards announced two weeks after each deadline. Program Development grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to enhance or extend a program that is consistent with BTtoP's objective of promoting engaged learning, civic engagement, and the psychosocial well-being of students. Institutional matching support is required for all grants. Proposals will bee accepted on a quarterly-deadline system (June 15, September 15, December 15, and March 15), with awards announced six to eight weeks after each deadline.

The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), and the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SMA) award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university. Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question. In an effort to improve the quality of dissertation research, many programs in both BCS and SES, the Research on Science and Technology Surveys and Statistics program within NCSES, and the Science of Science and Innovation Policy program in SMA accept doctoral dissertation improvement grant proposals. Requirements vary across programs, so proposers are advised to consult the relevant program's webpage for specific information and contact the program director if necessary.

Together with University Advancement, the Office for the Advancement of Research & Scholarship (OARS) is rolling out an new crowdfunding platform called HawksNest. Through HawksNest, alumni, family, and friends of the university can directly support the research, scholarship, and service projects of Miami University students, faculty, and staff. This is how HawksNest works: * Any Miami University student, faculty, or staff member may complete an online application to have a project considered for funding. * An internal review team assesses applications and posts approved projects on HawksNest for a maximum of 45 days. * Potential donors visit the site to learn about and pledge funds to approved projects. * Once a funding goal has been met, the project can begin! * Project managers use the site to keep donors up-to-date with information on the project's progress.

Programs supported through the initiative should be actively growing new speakers and have assessment and evaluation plans in place to identify progression in student Native language acquisition. Priority will be given to programs with long-term, community-based plans. Funding will support capacity-building activities designed to improve and enhance the program's ability to achieve its mission, which may include curriculum development, technology access, instructional courses and materials, mentorships, teacher training, and other kinds of organizational infrastructure To be eligible, programs must have an existing language-immersion program (one-year minimum), provide at least twenty hours per week for an entire school year of Native American language instruction, and serve a minimum of ten students between the ages of 3 and 22. The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, is pleased to announce an open competition for eligible organizations to submit applications to carry out a program to document and/or strengthen Afghanistan's traditional forms of cultural expression. For the purposes of this NOFO, traditional forms of cultural expression include but are not limited to musical composition and performance, dance and performing arts, poetry and oral traditions, traditional celebrations, and knowledge exchange from master to student in any form of cultural expression. Proposals with an educational component such as internship activities, educational outreach, capacity building, or training of students and young professionals are encouraged. Proposals must include a well-defined plan to raise public awareness of Afghan heritage, especially among youth, and a sustainability plan. Commercial activities, including the sale of products or tickets to performances, are not permitted.

The U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi invites U.S. and Georgian universities, educational institutes, non-profit/non-governmental organizations, and private sector entities to submit proposals for a one- to two-year project to improve the capabilities of Georgian scholars and students in commercialization of university research and marketing ideas. This project is meant to extend current research into the development process; foster entrepreneurial and innovative pursuits among Georgian professors, scholars, undergraduate, and graduate students; provide training in marketing, finance, revenue-raising, and small-business market-oriented sustainability; develop an ecosystem of knowledge transfer among Georgian universities that encourages entrepreneurial pursuits through the commercialization of research and ideas; and provide the framework for a sustainable entrepreneurial skills program consisting of a Georgian and American university consortium with possible in-kind contribution(s) from private sector entities and/or non-governmental organizations.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The over-arching goal of this National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce.  NIDDK's Short-Term Research Experience for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) provides funding to research institutions to provide for a national summer research experience program for both high school and undergraduate students for eight to ten weeks.  STEP-UP seeks to facilitate exposure opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research on a national basis, including individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and individuals with disabilities.

The Microsoft Foundation is inviting applications for its Dissertation Grants program. The program supports PhD students at North American universities who are underrepresented in the field of computing and pursuing research aligned to the research areas carried out by Microsoft Research. Through the program, recipients will receive funding of up to $25,000 for the 2020-21 academic year as well as an invitation to the PhD Summit, a two-day workshop in the fall held at one of Microsoft Research's labs where fellows will meet with Microsoft researchers and other top students to share their research. Fellows must be aligned in research areas as defined by Microsoft Research, which include artificial intelligence; audio and acoustics; computer vision; graphics and multimedia; human-computer interaction; human language technologies; search and information retrieval; data platforms and analytics; hardware and devices; programming languages and software engineering; security, privacy, and cryptography; systems and networking; algorithms; mathematics; ecology and environment; economics; medical, health, and genomics; social sciences; and technology for emerging markets.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE) is soliciting applications for Behavioral Interventions Scholars grants to support dissertation research by advanced graduate students who are using behavioral science approaches to examine specific research questions of relevance to social service programs and policies. These grants are meant to build capacity in the research field to apply a behavioral lens to issues facing poor and vulnerable families in the United States, and to foster mentoring relationships between faculty members and high-quality doctoral students. Applicants are required to demonstrate the applicability of their research to practice or policy serving low-income children, adults, and families, especially those that seek to improve their well-being.

Historically, grants through the program have supported research projects on a range of topics and disciplines, including education, psychology, sociology, economics, history, and anthropology; they also employ a wide range of research methods. Examples of recently funded projects include an experimental study of how college students use visual representations in solving math problems; a study exploring the process of racial and rural identity formation among African American high-school students who attend de facto segregated schools in the rural South; and a mixed-methods study focusing on the different types of knowledge novice and experienced teachers draw on in teaching for reading comprehension.

The AccessLex Center for Legal Education Excellence, in partnership with the Association for Institutional Research, is accepting applications for its 2017 Research and Dissertation Fellows Program. The annual competition awards grants to scholars and doctoral students in support of year-long research projects. The program is designed to promote scholarship on issues related to access, affordability, and the value of legal education specifically, and graduate and professional education more broadly. Preference will be given to proposals that use regional, national, or multi-institutional datasets (although research focused on a single institution is acceptable). In addition, preference will be given to proposals that specifically address legal education; however, proposals that study access, affordability, and value of graduate and professional education more generally also are encouraged. Researchers may analyze pre-existing data or include the construction of a new dataset in their proposal. Two levels of grants are available to recipients affiliated with a non-profit U.S. postsecondary institution or relevant higher and legal education organization. 1) Research Grants: grants of up $50,000 are available to faculty, practitioners, and scholars. 2) Dissertation Grants: Grants of up to $25,000 are available to doctoral students for dissertation research and writing under the guidance of a faculty advisor.
