he overall goal of this initiative is to enhance our understanding of fundamental biological mechanisms involved in disease conditions that disproportionately affect health disparity populations and develop therapies or interventions that can directly or demonstrably contribute to the reduction or elimination of health disparities. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits applications to conduct: 1. Biological and genetic research to explore disease mechanisms or pathways that influence health outcomes in minority and health disparity populations. 2. Clinical and translational research linking basic science discovery with effective treatment or clinical practice to improve health outcomes in minority and health disparity populations. Projects investigating the etiology, physiology, genetic risk factors, molecular pathways, gene-environmental interactions, pharmacogenomic and personalized medicine in health disparity populations are particularly encouraged.

The Center for the Study of Southern Culture (CSSC) and the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi announce a $1,000 research grant to catalyze scholarship on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the desegregation of Southern restaurants.

The Research on Education and Learning (REAL) program represents the substantive foci of three previous EHR programs: Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE), Research in Disabilities Education (RDE), and Research on Gender in Science and Engineering (GSE). What is distinctive about the new REAL program is the emphasis placed on the accumulation of robust evidence to inform efforts to (a) understand, (b) build theory to explain, and (c) suggest interventions (and innovations) to address persistent challenges in STEM interest, education, learning, and participation. The program supports advances in research on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning and education by fostering efforts to explore all aspects of education research from foundational knowledge to improvements in STEM learning and learning contexts, both formal and informal, from childhood through adulthood, for all groups, and from the earliest developmental stages of life through participation in the workforce, resulting in increased public understanding of science and engineering. The REAL program will fund research on, human learning in STEM; learning in STEM learning environments, and broadening participation research.

he Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF), Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) announces the solicitation of applications for grants under the Family Violence Prevention and Services Discretionary Grants program to implement Culturally-Specific Trauma Services for Families Impacted by Domestic Violence. The intent of this Family Violence Prevention and Services Discretionary Grant Program is to build and sustain organizational capacity in delivering trauma-informed, developmentally sensitive, culturally relevant services for children, individuals, and families affected by domestic violence (DV), dating violence, family violence, and other traumas. This discretionary grant program will build and expand upon the progress of culturally-specific and community-based domestic violence programs in reducing the pervasive and harmful impact of violence and trauma by implementing culturally relevant trauma-informed, evidence-informed, or evidence-based interventions for individuals and families who are from diverse and historically marginalized communities.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is announcing the availability of funds under this grant program to assist researchers in conducting health services research for 2013. The purpose of the Hispanic grant program is to implement Hispanic health services research activities to meet the needs of diverse CMS beneficiary populations. The grant program is designed to: 1) encourage health services and health disparities researchers to pursue research issues which impact Hispanic Medicare, Medicaid, and Children Health Insurance Program (CHIP) health services issues, 2) conduct outreach activities to apprise Hispanic researchers of funding availability to conduct research-related issues affecting Hispanic communities to expand the pool of applicants applying for such grants, 3) assist CMS in implementing its mission focusing on health care quality and improvement for its beneficiaries, 4) support extramural research in health care capa city development activities for the Hispanic communities, 5) promote research that will be aimed at developing a better understanding of health care services issues pertaining to Hispanics, and 6) foster an network for communication and collaboration regarding Hispanic health care issues.

Purpose: Through a collaborative FOA, CDC seeks to fund a consortium of public health oriented national networks to impact tobacco-related and cancer health disparities within specific target populations. The target populations are: 1). African Americans; 2). American Indians/Alaskan Natives; 3). Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders/Hawaiian Natives; 4). Latinos/Hispanics; 5). Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender persons; 6). Persons with Low Socioeconomic Status; 7). Persons with Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorders; and 8). Geographically Defined Populations with High Commercial Tobacco Use and Related Health Disparities. This tailored strategy is needed to achieve the benefits of an overall population-based approach to commercial tobacco use prevention and cancer prevention and control and the achievement of health equity for all populations.

The Coordinating Council for Women in History Ida B. Wells Graduate Student Fellowship is an annual award of $1000 given to a graduate student working on a historical dissertation that interrogates race and gender, not necessarily in a history department. The award is intended to support either a crucial stage of research or the final year of writing. The applicant must be a CCWH member; must be a graduate student in any department of a U.S. institution; must have passed to A.B.D. status by the time of application; may hold this award and others simultaneously; and need not attend the award ceremony to receive the award. The deadline for the award is 15 September 2013.

The Call for Marie Curie Action Fellowships was launched a few weeks ago (http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/apply-now/open-calls/index_en.htm). It is a great, international, and competitive contest, which gives an unique opportunity for researchers to move in a new country and develop their own project in cooperation with a local host centre.

The National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, announces the launch of the special initiative, Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle. The project brings together four nationally acclaimed films that connect the stories of the long civil rights movement to spark public conversations about the changing meanings of freedom and equality in U.S. history. Up to 500 communities across the nation will receive these four inspiring NEH-funded films on Civil Rights history, accompanied by programming resources to guide public conversations. Each participating site will receive an award of up to $1,200 to support public programming exploring the themes of the Created Equal project.

The student will learn about developing a public program. The series they will be focusing on celebrates the legacy of Afro-Latinos in the United States. For example, Arturo Schomburg, a black Puerto Rican bibliophile who African-American scholars like Carter G. Woodson, The Father of African-American History, benefitted from his collection of Pan-African scholarly works. Summer 2013 - $6,000/400 hours {10-20 weeks}. We are looking for students (undergraduate or graduate) who are enrolled in a degree seeking program. Recent graduates (no earlier than January 15, 2013) are eligible to apply. *Goldman Sachs Multicultural Junior Fellows program targets applicants who are part of a U.S. minority group (i.e. African-American, Latino-American, Asian Pacific Islander-American, Native American). Applicants should have a background in African-American Studies, Latino Studies, American Studies, History or something closely related. They should be able demonstrate knowledge of Pan-African and or Pan-Latino history and culture or something closely related. Public program experience is highly regarded.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the National Endowment for the Humanities has developed a special project as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative: Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle. Up to 500 communities across the nation will receive a packaged set of NEH-funded films on Civil Rights history, accompanied by programming resources to guide public conversations about the changing meanings of freedom and equality in U.S. history. NOTE: Each participating site will receive an award of up to $1,200 to support public programming exploring the themes of the Created Equal project. The films featured in the set are The Abolitionists, Slavery by Another Name, The Loving Story, and Freedom Riders. Applications are open to museums and historical societies; humanities councils; public, academic, and community college libraries; and nonprofit community organizations.

With this solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for the W.E.B. Du Bois Fellowship for Research on Race, Gender, Culture, and Crime FY 2013. The Fellowship Program seeks to advance knowledge regarding the confluence of crime, justice, and culture in various societal contexts. The Fellowship places particular emphasis on crime, violence, and the administration of justice in diverse cultural contexts within the United States.

NIJ seeks proposals for research and evaluation related to violent victimization. Research proposed may be focused at the Federal, State, local, tribal, juvenile justice policy and/or practice level. NIJ is particularly interested in proposals examining one or more of the following topics: * Intersection of race, ethnicity, and violent victimization. * Effectiveness of services for victims of violent crime. * Victim/Offender overlap as it pertains to violent crime. * Sexual orientation and/or gender identity and violent victimization.
