Most survey-based prevalence estimates of type 1 diabetes among adults have been based on self-reported information about a young age at diagnosis (e.g.,30 years and 40 years) and insulin use within a year of diagnosis. However, this estimation approach misses type 1 diabetes in adults with older age of onset and may misclassify some cases of type 2 diabetes as type 1 if insulin use begins soon after diagnosis. The major goal of this project is to evaluate the validity of survey questions (or algorithms based on them) to distinguish between adults (aged 18 years of age) with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in a representative sample of adult diabetic patients in a diabetes patient registry or database. Using a gold standard, validity will be assessed by examining the sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value of algorithms to identify type of diabetes across demographic strata such as age, sex, and race. A secondary goal is to validate definitions of type of diabetes using electronic health records.

The DePaul University Humanities Center (DHC) is inviting applications for Visiting Fellows for 2020-2021. All applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent, and research projects must be in the humanities. International applications will be considered. Fellowships may run for nine months (from September 2020 to June 2021) or six months (from January 2021 to June 2021). During their tenure, Visiting Fellows are required to make an intellectual contribution to the DePaul community and participate in the programming and activities of the DHC and the university. We are especially interested in applications that involve a project around the theme of "Age," broadly construed. All applications regardless of topic will be considered, but preference will be given to applicants who draw connections between their proposed project and the 2020-21 DHC theme, "Age." NB: The DHC will be hosting events that touch on such topics as the analog age and the era of cassette tapes; child liberation; birth & infancy; the juvenile justice system; the gendering of age; childhood, games, and gaming; and sexuality and privacy in the golden years. Ultimately, we are interested in interdisciplinary, creative, innovative projects that take up the theme of "Age."

The purpose of this initiative is to support research to develop and test youth violence prevention interventions that incorporate racism/discrimination prevention strategies for one or more health disparity populations. The target age range includes middle school to high school-aged youth, corresponding to an approximate age range of 11 to 18.

YSA is now accepting applications for the 2019 MLK Day of Service Grants to activate youth volunteers on MLK Day of Service weekend. Funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, these grants offer youth development organizations, community-based organizations, and schools/school districts grant funding and capacity-building training to effectively recruit and engage young people in meaningful service activities. Asking young people to volunteer for the first time on national days of service is a critical first step towards creating a culture in which all young people have the opportunity and support to find their voice, take action, and make an impact in their communities. Grantees will activate youth, ages 5-25 - 80% middle and high school age - to lead service or service-learning projects through which they can acquire 21st Century Skills (Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking).

The Administration for Children and Families, Administration for Native Americans announces the availability of Fiscal Year 2018 funds for the Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance - Esther Martinez Immersion (EMI) program. EMI provides funding for community-based projects that ensure continuing vitality of Native languages through immersion-based instruction. Programs funded under the EMI funding opportunity announcement must meet the requirements for either a Native American Language Nest, or a Native American Survival School. As defined by Esther Martinez Native American Languages Preservation Act (42 U.S.C. 2991b-3(b)(7). Pub. L. 109-394), Language Nests are "site-based educational programs that provide child care and instruction in a Native American language for at least 10 children under the age of seven for an average of at least 500 hours per child," and Native American Survival Schools are "site based educational programs for school-aged students that provide at least 500 hours per year per student of Native American language instruction to at least 15 students".

This initiative seeks applications that propose to stimulate and expand research in the health of minority men. Specifically, this initiative is intended to: 1) enhance our understanding of the numerous factors (e.g., sociodemographic, community, societal, personal) influencing the health promoting behaviors of racial and ethnic minority males across the life cycle, and 2) encourage applications focusing on the development and testing of culturally and linguistically appropriate health-promoting interventions designed to reduce health disparities among racially and ethnically diverse males age 18 and older.

As the population of older adults continues to increase, the prevalence of diseases and conditions common in aging is expected to rise. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases, dementia, and chronic kidney disease will likely continue to be the greatest sources of morbidity and mortality, as well as the costliest conditions to healthcare systems. However, older Americans infrequently have just one chronic health condition. In 2010, over two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries had more than one chronic condition, and 14% had 6 or more chronic conditions. Disability and greater care needs associated with these conditions is leading to an increase in residence in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Healthcare costs will continue to grow, with health-related spending expected to top 20% of gross domestic product by 2025. Also listed under R01

The Office of Citizen Exchanges, Youth Programs Division, of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition for the Youth Leadership Program with Burma. Public and private non-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c)(3) may submit proposals to conduct three- to four-week U.S.-based exchange programs for teenagers and adult educators. Participants will be high-school-aged youth and adult educators. Applicants should plan to provide U.S.-based programming for 17-18 youth and 2-3 adult participants from Burma. The activities for each program will focus on civic education, leadership, diversity, and community engagement and prepare participants to conduct projects at home that serve a community need.

The GriffinHarte Foundation promotes civil conversations about issues that divide us and are often contentious and difficult to sort through. The Embassy of the United States in London invites eligible organizations to submit proposals to develop and implement a 14- to 21-day group exchange program to the United States for up to 10 UK-based young leaders ages 18-5 to focus on efforts in the U .S. to counter hate crimes and build community resilience to conflict . With a strong focus on community and engagement with American interlocutors, UK participants will immerse themselves in U.S. society through discussions, dialogue groups, workshops, site visits, and professional appointments. Strictly subject to the availability of funds, the U.S. Embassy in London expects to select one program implementer for a grant award from $100,000 up to $125,000.

The program supports high-quality field-initiated studies relevant to policies and practices that affect the lives of young people between the ages of 5 and 25 in the United States. Investigations into various systems, including justice, housing, child welfare, mental health, and education are encouraged. The program seeks research that builds, tests, and increases understanding of approaches to reducing inequality in youth outcomes, especially on the basis of race, ethnicity, economic standing, language minority status, and/or immigrant origins and is also interested in research dedicated to programs, policies, and practices designed to reduce inequality in academic, social, behavioral, and economic outcomes.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recognizes the importance of acknowledging and appropriately responding to cultural and linguistic influences across the speech-language-hearing discipline. To advance that mission, the association is currently accepting proposals with a multicultural focus that address cultural and linguistic diversity issues related to professionals and persons with communications disorders and differences. The United States Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, acting through the Office of Public Affairs, is pleased to announce a Notice of funding opportunities for two types of Civic Education programs that address school segregation or other problems that divide students along ethnic lines. These projects should advance Education for Democracy and Hhelp remove obstacles to integration in education. Small grants competition will support projects designed explicitly as home-stay exchange programs to contribute to democracy and human rights education with interaction and the development of tolerance between the ethnically, religiously and geographically diverse communities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition to the core exchange program activities, the mandatory requirement is a component of family engagement in which participants will stay in the homes of fellow participants from different ethnic or religious backgrounds, and engage in volunteer projects in both communities. Priority will be given to innovative programs that bring together youth (ages 12-24) from communities across ethnic, geographical, and administrative lines and engage large number of youth in community improvement activity in each host town. Detailed budget should be expressed in USD, with a maximum amount of $20,000.

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai (PAS Mumbai) seeks proposals for a project entitled, "Promoting Diversity and Tolerance through Interfaith and Interclass Community Service Projects." Under this project, the grantee will work with local partners and the consulate to identify up to 500 youth, aged 12-25 from different cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds, to participate in the program to be held in a secondary city in one of the following four western Indian states: Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, or Maharashtra.

This funding opportunity announcement encourages collaborative teams to target gaps in methods and outcomes regarding research participant recruitment and retention. The team approach encouraged by this initiative will be used to generate a research resource to advance processes for high yield recruitment, formulate breakthrough ideas, concepts and approaches to research participant recruitment and retention, strengthen outreach and community engagement practices, and devise improved communication strategies. Teams will demonstrate the success of these improvements by engaging a large diverse population. The primary outcome will be the development of a population of diverse community members ready to engage in NIA funded clinical research studies.
