Responding to Opioid Use Disorders (OUD) in Tribal Communities in the Context of SAMHSA... - 0 views

    The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to leverage SAMHSA funding (including TI-18-016, TI-18-015, and TI 17-014) for tribal responses to the opioid crisis by supporting culturally relevant research built upon projects supported by SAMHSA. The topic of the research project will vary depending on how funding is used in tribal communities. Potential topics include, for example, studies of evidence-based interventions adapted to enhance their feasibility, acceptability, availability and/or effectiveness in tribal communities; assessing the effectiveness of interventions with an evidence base from another population when implemented to address the opioid crisis in tribal communities; augmenting hypothesis-based data collection to inform intervention adaptation and implementation; or epidemiologic studies that assess the reach or implementation of interventions. Research supported through this FOA will be performed in two phases. The first phase (R61) will provide support for up to two years and allow for development and start up of the project including, where relevant, development and pilot testing of study elements including measurements, the study design, and/or adaption of intervention. This phase will identify and meet pre-specified milestones ensuring that the results of this phase inform and provide a foundation for the second phase of the research. Phase two (R33) is dependent upon successful completion of the R61 phase and an approved plan for the R33 phase. Phase two will provide possible funding for three years to expand to a full test of the research aims.

    The Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Act (DD Act), requires that the programs authorized under the law are culturally competent to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities, regardless of background, are full participants in all aspects of community life. According to the DD Act, Sec. 101. [42 USC 15001] c Policy. "It is the policy of the United States that all programs receiving assistance under this title shall be carried out in a manner consistent with the principles that Services, supports, and other assistance should be provided that demonstrate respect for personal preferences, and cultural differences; Specific efforts must be made to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds and their families enjoy increased and meaningful opportunities to access and use community services, individualized supports available to other individuals with developmental disabilities and their families; Recruitment efforts in disciplines related to developmental disabilities in pre-service training, community training, practice, administration, and Policymaking must focus on bringing larger numbers of racial and ethnic minorities into the disciplines in order to provide appropriate skills, knowledge, role models, and sufficient personnel to address the growing needs of an increasingly diverse population."     It is well documented that the United States is becoming an increasingly racially and ethnically diverse country. By 2050 there will be no ethnic majority in the United States (U.S.). There is a need to ensure that the disability community keeps pace with and is responsive to the rapidly changing demographics of the country and the UCEDDs should play a critical role in such an effort. The DD Act recognizes the important role that UCEDDs play in enhancing the diversity of the workforce, requiring that UCEDDs enhance efforts to recruit and retain underrepresented groups at all levels in order to respond to the needs of nation and burgeoning diverse communities. It is essential now more than ever to ensure that UCEDDs are well positioned to address the unprecedented growth of diverse communities, including the growth in the number of people with disabilities, to ensure the future yields prosperity for all. To this end, UCEDDs need to know how to align their training programs and overall UCEDD organizational framework to truly reflect and respond to our nation's rich diversity.     The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to reduce the burden of cancer and improve the quality of cancer care in rural areas among low-income and/or underserved populations. The FOA encourages two types of applications: 1) observational research that includes pilot testing of intervention to understand and address predictors of cancer care/treatment and outcomes in rural low-income and/or underserved populations; or 2) intervention research to address known predictors of cancer care/treatment and outcomes in rural low-income and/or underserved populations. Specifically, the focus for observational studies (with pilot testing) is understanding and addressing the predictive and/or mediating role of social determinants of health, barriers to care, and treatment; and the focus for interventional research is on addressing quality of care related to cancer diagnosis, treatment and/or survivorship. Most existing cancer control interventions are not ready for direct implementation and dissemination in low-income rural areas, so proposals should seek to develop, adapt, and/or implement, and test interventions.

The CEC will employ and refine the processes developed in the previous funding period to assess the impact of BUILD and NRMN activities on attainment of the hallmarks.     This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits a single five-year grant application from eligible institutions/organizations to serve as the Coordination Center (CC) for the Programs to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) Summer Institutes (SIs). This FOA runs in parallel with a separate FOA that solicits applications for the PRIDE SIs (described in detail in RFA-HL-19-002). PRIDE SIs are designed to provide research education experiences that enable junior faculty who are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences (as defined by NOT-OD-18-122) to further develop their research skills and knowledge to become competitive NIH grants applicants and scientists.
    The purpose of the CC is to provide programmatic support for the PRIDE program overall and to complement the activities of the SI programs as follows:

    Support and assist with the identification and orientation of SI program mentors
    Support matriculants' research education experiences through webinar and in-person learning activities
    Administrate and facilitate equitable distribution of research- related resources and opportunities
    Facilitate coordination of research education and evaluation activities between the SI awardees, enrolled participants, and the NHLBI
    Develop and facilitate orientation and other skill development activities for mentors
    Support mentoring of program participants by assisting the SIs with the formation of participants' mentorship committees
    Conduct cross-site and cross-program evaluations, including use of data from previous PRIDE cohorts to document program accomplishments, trends and trajectories.
