Promoting and improving English language education in Japan will increase U.S.-Japan exchange, a top priority of the Embassy of the United States. A 2012 report by the U.S.-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON) noted that inadequate English language proficiency among Japanese young people can discourage students from applying and may decrease their chances of admission to programs abroad. The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) is working to strengthen English language education from kindergarten through university. The U.S. Embassy supports MEXT's goal of strengthening English language education by providing Japanese teachers of English with various Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) training programs to improve their English teaching, with the ultimate goal of promoting more student exchange between the United States and Japan.

The primary goal of the funding opportunity is to engage English teachers in training programs that will strengthen English teaching quality and capacity in the Dominican Republic. The target population for this training program will be public school teachers, teachers from the Ministry of Higher Education's English Immersion Program and teachers from the binational centers (Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano and Centro Cultural Dominico-Americano). Institutions should include a description of the interview and selection procedures and assessment methods for the proposed training program(s). Participants and Audiences: a. License at least five teachers or teacher trainers as TESOL Trainers Target audience: Teachers or Supervisors/Teacher Trainers from the Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano's Teacher Training Center and/or English School b. Train at least 80 English pre-service teachers and/or in-service teachers in the communicative approach in support of the new English curriculum implemented by the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic in the northern, eastern, southern and/or capital region. Target audience: Pre-service teachers attending local universities, including UASD and ISFODOSU, and/or in-service teachers from the Ministry of Education c. The Office of English Language Programs of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition for proposals to advance the Bureau's objectives through support of academic exchanges that will result in the improvement of English teaching capacity around the world and the enhancement of mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through exchanges of U.S. English language educators to all regions of the world. The EL Fellow and Specialist Program builds bridges of mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through exchanges of U.S. English language educators. The EL Fellow and Specialist Program sends talented, highly qualified U.S. citizens in the area of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or a closely related field on approximately ten month Fellow exchanges or short-term (two-weeks or more) Specialist assignments at educational institutions in all regions of the world. Through U.S. embassy-designated projects, EL Fellows and Specialists share their expertise, build English teaching capacity abroad, hone their skills, and gain international experience. Upon returning to the United States, they share their experiences and acquired knowledge with their communities and professional colleagues. Projects are carried out with host country ministries of education, universities, teacher-training institutions, NGOs, binational centers, and other English language teaching institutions.

The project will promote the development of English language, classroom pedagogy, community engagement and leadership skills of the participants through first-hand experience and networking with English language teaching peers in the United States. Through teamwork activities, the program will develop participants' classroom, leadership, communication skills, and teacher trainer skills. In addition to enhancing the participants' ability to implement effective English language programs in Pakistan, the exchange program will provide participants a better understanding of the United States, its people, and its democratic values. By the end of the English Language Teaching Exchanges, approximately 50 Pakistani English language teachers from government or foundation schools from undeserved areas will further develop their pedagogic expertise in teaching English language, improve their own English language proficiency, and increase their knowledge about the United States.

Proposals will be accepted for a minimum of $75,000 and a maximum of $100,000 to partner with RELO Pakistan to convene an "International English Language Teacher Education Forum" that will include presentations, workshops, and symposia on best practices in English Language Teaching (ELT) and the professional development of Pakistani English language teachers and researchers. The Forum will gather alumni from RELO programs and Pakistani English language teaching professionals across Pakistan from a cross-section of instructional and institutional levels to initiate and sustain meaningful professional dialogues. The Forum will also be a platform for the RELO to work with members of existing organizations (and/or parties interested in forming new associations) to reflect on the current status of professional English language teachers' associations in Pakistan. RELO Islamabad has a vested interest in an active and healthy professional teachers' organization in Pakistan. Teachers' associations can be important partners to identify need for programming, can act as conveners to facilitate programs that address needs, and can greatly extend the reach of RELO programs through a country-wide network. The applicant may administer sub-grants for regional conferences and assist in supporting the promotion of viable new and/or existing professional English teachers' associations in Pakistan.

Public Affairs Section (PAS) seeks to provide Iraqi youth with educational opportunities through English-language instruction in accordance with Mission Iraq goals. The English Access Micro-scholarship Program for Central and Southern Iraq will provide a foundation of English language skills to non-elite, 13 to 18 year-old students through after-school classes and intensive summer activities over a two-year period. Access Program students also gain an appreciation for American culture and democratic values, increase their ability to participate successfully in the socio-economic development of their countries, and gain the ability to compete for and participate in future U.S. Government-sponsored educational programs. Subject to the availability of funds, the Embassy expects to award a grant up to $380,000 to carry out the English Access Micro-scholarship Program for Central and Southern Iraq over a twenty-four month time frame.

he U.S. Embassy Macedonia Public Affairs Section is pleased to announce that funding is available for academic year English language teaching programs that offer primary and/or secondary school students in Macedonia innovative and experiential learning opportunities to improve their English and learn about the United States. Programs should meet at least once a week throughout the academic school year, beginning in September 2017. The main objectives of this program are to: * Provide opportunities for disadvantaged students to improve their English speaking ability. * Teach about American culture and values through English language learning. * Connect students in the United States and Macedonia, so that they can learn more about each other and build relationships. * Promote inter-ethnic understanding among students in Macedonia. The country-wide English Works! Program will offer the opportunity to at least 600 at-risk Pakistani youth ages 17-25 to increase their English language proficiency, critical thinking, employability, and soft skills to become more productive members of their community and society. English Works! will be taught using the existing curriculum and guidance of RELO Pakistan. Implementers and teachers may participate in trainings (in-person or online) designed to introduce them to sample activities and suggested methodology.

On August 29, 2013, Great Lakes began accepting applications for 2014-2015 College Ready grants. This latest grant opportunity supports programs that help high school juniors and seniors and adult learners become prepared to succeed in college-level math and English classes-courses essential to earning a college degree.

Through the program, two-year grants of up to $600,000 will be awarded to programs that serve students who, given appropriate attention, tutoring, and skill-building activities, can succeed in college-level math and English classes.

This project seeks to provide Afghan women with an American-style, liberal arts, English language-based undergraduate education in Afghanistan, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Indian sub-continent, or the East Asia-Pacific region. This educational opportunity will enable Afghan scholars to actively participate in the Afghan workforce and serve as positive agents of change upon completion of their studies.

Under the call, grants of up to $50,000 over up to three years will be awarded in support of education research projects that contribute to an understanding of the rapid shifts in education in this time of crisis and change. The foundation is especially interested in studies focused on understanding and disrupting the reproduction and deepening of educational inequality caused by the crisis, as well as research projects that are working to reimagine educational opportunities in these times. The foundation is interested in proposals at all levels and in all settings of learning, including early childhood, higher education, and in schools, families, and communities, as well as studies that seek to understand the situated experiences of non-dominant groups, including English-language learners, immigrants, minoritized communities, Indigenous communities, students with disabilities, highly mobile and institutionalized youth (e.g., foster youth or those in youth prisons), and rural communities. The program will support proposals from multiple disciplinary and methodological perspectives, both domestically and internationally, as well as from scholars at various stages in their careers.

Purpose of Program: The Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) Program awards competitive grants to advance literacy skills, including pre-literacy skills, reading, and writing, for children from birth through grade 12, with an emphasis on disadvantaged children, including children living in poverty, English learners, and children with disabilities.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) invites eligible entities to submit competitive grant applications for projects to establish and manage Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) for low-income refugee participants. Eligible refugee participants who enroll in these projects will open and contribute systematically to IDAs for specified Savings Goals, including home ownership, business capitalization, vehicles for educational or work purposes, professional certification, and education (limited to postsecondary and/or continuing education, college entrance exam fees, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and GED preparation and test fees). Grantee organizations may use ORR funds to provide matches for the savings in the IDAs of up to $2,000 per individual refugee and $4,000 per refugee household. Applications will be screened and evaluated as indicated in the published funding opportunity announcement. Selection of awards will be contingent on the outcome of the competition and the availability of funds. The “match” mentioned in this announcement does not refer to the applicant finding additional funds to match funds being provided by the Federal government; it is the portion of federal funds to be allocated for matching clients' IDA savings. Successful grantees will be expected to coordinate their policies and procedures for developing and administering refugee IDA projects with ORR and with the existing refugee IDA network.
