USArtists International (USAI) is committed to ensuring that the impressive range of expression of the performing arts in the United States is represented abroad, and that the creative and professional development of American artists is enhanced through participation at significant international festivals.  Performances at important festivals provide American artists with opportunities for the exchange of ideas and practices with their colleagues in other countries, as well as exposure to new and larger audiences.  It is our hope that participation of exemplary artists from the United States in international festivals will help develop audiences for, and greater appreciation of, the excellence, diversity and vitality of the American performing arts. Through USAI, grants are available to American dance, music and theater ensembles and solo performers that have been invited to perform at significant international festivals anywhere in the world outside of the United States.  

This project takes as its focus the documentation and dissemination of performance art from the former communist and socialist countries of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, from the period of c. 1960-1989. Performance art in the West emerged as a self-conscious genre, and a deliberate alternative to the production of painting and sculpture for display in the gallery space. However, in Eastern Europe, artists such as Jiří Kovanda (Czechoslovakia), Andris Grīnbergs (Latvia), and Ion Grigorescu (Romania) often created performance art for a select group of friends and colleagues, and even sometimes only for themselves. If in the West, documentation was often an essential component of performance art, and necessary to exhibit the work in the gallery, in the East, the recording of performances, by video or photography, was more haphazard. At times, artists were intent on documenting their work for posterity, in the hope that someday, somewhere (outside of the totalitarian regime) it would have an audience. At others, photographs were taken simply as a record, without any thought that they would ever be seen.

Through its Performance Program, the fund supports performing and presenting organizations whose artistic excellence encourages and improves public knowledge and appreciation of serious contemporary American music. General support grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded to professional performing ensembles and presenting organizations with a history of substantial commitment to contemporary American music and as well as plans to continue that commitment. The program also provides project support for exceptionally important activities related to contemporary American music proposed by professional performing ensembles and presenting organizations that do not normally feature contemporary American music in their programming.

Administered by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the USArtists International program supports performances by American artists at important cultural festivals and arts marketplaces around the globe. USAI encourages and promotes the vibrant diversity of American artists and creative expression in the performing arts by expanding opportunity and exposure to international audiences, encouraging international cultural exchange, and enhancing the creative and professional development of U.S. based artists by providing connections with presenters, curators, and artists around the world. Grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to American dance, music, and theater ensembles and solo performers that have been invited to perform at international festivals and/or for performance engagements that represent extraordinary career opportunities anywhere in the world outside the U.S.

Created by its namesake in keeping with his lifelong devotion to contemporary music, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music seeks to encourage and improve public knowledge and appreciation of contemporary American music. Through its Performance Program, the fund supports performing and presenting organizations whose artistic excellence encourages and improves public knowledge and appreciation of serious contemporary American music. General support grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded to professional performing ensembles and presenting organizations with a history of substantial commitment to contemporary American music and as well as plans to continue that commitment. The program also provides project support for exceptionally important activities related to contemporary American music proposed by professional performing ensembles and presenting organizations that do not normally feature contemporary American music in their programming.

The Cultural Exchange Fund, an initiative of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, is a travel subsidy program that assists U.S.-based presenters in building partnerships with international touring artists, companies, and their collaborators. The focus of the program is on increasing presenters' knowledge of international performing artists based outside the U.S. and the cultural context for these artists' work. In promoting cross-cultural arts programming, travel to Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East is strongly encouraged. The maximum amount awarded per individual organization or artist is $2,000. Group travel subsidies of three or more presenters are also available, with a maximum award of $10,000. All applicants must be members of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals. Requests are reviewed two times per year; the final 2019 deadline is October 30. Applications must be submitted online through the Association of Performing Arts Professionals website.

The PAJ programwasstarted by the Japan Foundation in 1994 with themission to establish a system for promoting Japanese performing artsinNorth America. The PAJ programsupportsthe initiatives taken by nonprofit organizationsin theUnited States and Canada to provide geographically diverse audiences with greater exposure to Japanese performing arts. PAJ also encourages collaborations between Japanese and American/Canadian artists, which will further an appreciation ofJapanese culture when presented to audiences in the United States and Canada. To realize the above objectives,the PAJ programofferstwo types ofsupport: 1) The TOURINGGRANT assists with the presentation ofJapanese performing arts at multiple locations in theUnited States and/or Canada, with emphasis on locations outside major metropolitan areas where there is little exposure to the Japanese performing arts. 2) The COLLABORATIONGRANT facilitatesthe collaboration ofJapanese and American/Canadian artistsso thattheymay create a new work with the potentialto develop into a touring project and further an appreciation ofJapanese culture when presented to audiences in theUnited States and Canada.

As part of this mission, the foundation is accepting applications from nonprofit performing ensembles for general operating support or special project support. For the 2019 funding cycle, support will be given to projects that take place between September 2019 and August 2020. (The foundation will only consider projects that fall outside that window under extraordinary circumstances.) In general, grants will range between $1,000 and $7,500, although larger grants may be awarded to larger performing organizations with an extraordinary commitment to contemporary concert music or a particularly significant project. To be eligible, applicants must be a nonprofit amateur choral ensemble or youth choir performing contemporary classical music at an exceptionally high artistic level.

AIIS fellowships are granted in 4 areas: Junior Research Fellowships Junior Research Fellowships are available to doctoral candidates at U.S. universities in all fields of study. These grants are specifically designed to enable doctoral candidates to pursue their dissertation research in India. Junior Research Fellows establish formal affiliation with Indian universities and Indian research supervisors. Awards are available for up to 11 months. Senior Research Fellowships Senior Research Fellowships are available to scholars with a PhD or its equivalent. These grants are designed to enable scholars who specialize in South Asia to pursue further research in India and to establish formal affiliation with an Indian institution. Short-term awards are available for up to four months. Long-term awards are available for six to nine months. A limited number of humanists will be granted fellowships paid in dollars funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Senior Scholarly/Professional Development Fellowships Senior Scholarly/Professional Development Fellowships are available both to established scholars who have not previously specialized in Indian studies and to established professionals who have not previously worked or studied in India. Senior Scholarly/Professional Development Fellows are formally affiliated with an Indian institution. Awards may be granted for periods of six to nine months. Senior Performing and Creative Arts Fellowships Senior Performing and Creative Arts Fellowships are available to accomplished practitioners of the performing arts of India and creative artists who demonstrate that study in India would enhance their skills, develop their capabilities to teach or perform in the U.S., enhance American involvement with India's artistic traditions or strengthen their links with peers in India. Awards will normally be for periods of up to four months, although proposals for periods of up to nine months can be considered.

ArtsCONNECT provides support for projects in which at least three performing arts presenters from two different states work collaboratively to present a touring solo artist or ensemble. Through this program the Foundation generally supports 10-to-15 tours per season that reach up to 50 communities in the mid-Atlantic region. The tours include performances as well as activities, such as artist discussions, lecture demonstrations, master classes, and workshops designed to build greater appreciation for the work of the touring artist or ensemble. The program is also designed to develop and deepen relationships among the region's presenters in order to build a more sustainable touring environment for professional performing artists.

Organizations are encouraged to submit letters of inquiry for projects that strengthen the national infrastructure of the professional nonprofit dance, jazz, presenting and/or theatre fields, or that improve conditions for the national community of performing artists in dance, jazz and theatre, such as: Research projects assessing the national health of professional nonprofit arts groups or of individual professional artists; Special national convenings for entire professional nonprofit performing arts fields (beyond traditional national annual conferences); Special projects that address unique circumstances that affect an entire professional nonprofit field. Highest priority will be given to projects that improve the health of the Arts Program's priority performing arts fields and do not duplicate ongoing efforts or existing services.

We propose the development of a skills building workshop series to promote empowerment and engagement, using civil society and community. This should focus on under-served communities, especially in second-tier Indian cities, using theater and performance techniques. No large scale performance is required at any venue, but small performances should be generated, recorded, and prepared for broadcast through a variety of media platforms as part of the workshop. The workshops will provide underserved local communities with techniques to build confidence, skills, increase a sense of community, and build linkages across communities and between peoples and institutions that normally do not interact. These linkages should include organizations in both India and the United States. Target audiences will be identified by U.S. Mission India, and may include underserved youth in second tier cities, e.g. Lucknow. Youth might come from the full range of economic backgrounds, from street kids to students in better local academic institutions. It is not required that the workshops take place in all five consular districts; instead, the U.S. Mission will work with the program partner, local theater partners, and with other appropriate institutions to identify the priority locations for this project. The project should use traditional media, Facebook and Twitter as amplifiers, and will use such means as DVC, Livestream, Google, etc., to broadcast events. We hope to foster a recognition among Indians that as their economic stature rises, the social and political inclusion of once marginalized groups will advance the interests that the U.S. and India have in common. 

Applications may be submitted by publicly supported non-profit performing ensembles, presenters and music service organizations that have a history of substantial commitment to contemporary concert music at a high level of excellence. Organizations must have been in existence for at least two years. Performing ensembles, presenters, or organizations that are applying for support for performances must have presented two full seasons prior to the season for which support is requested, except for special projects of extraordinary significance. In that case, one must contact the Grants Manager for approval prior to beginning an application. Applications from organizations with a budget of over $10 million will be considered only for special project support. The Grants Manager should be contacted for approval prior to beginning an application. Please note that, in general, the grant program does not support jazz music.

The MAP Fund is founded on the principle that exploration drives human progress, no less in art than in science or medicine. MAP supports original live performance projects that embody a spirit of deep inquiry. In particular, MAP is interested in supporting artists that question, disrupt, complicate, and challenge inherited notions of social and cultural hierarchy across the current American landscape. MAP supports projects that address these concerns through the processes of creating and distributing live performance to the public, and/or through the content and themes of the work itself. The program pursues its mission by welcoming applications for aesthetically-diverse, live performance projects that operate in dialogue with the current socio-political climate, and by employing a new group of peer reviewers and panelists each year who are empowered to recommend the projects they believe most align with our goals through a rigorous evaluation process that is moderated by MAP staff. MAP awards $1 million annually to up to 40 projects in the range of $10,000 - $45,000 per grant.

The MAP Fund invests in artistic production as the critical foundation of imagining - and ultimately co-creating - a more equitable and vibrant society. MAP supports original live performance projects that embody a spirit of deep inquiry, particularly works created by artists who question, disrupt, complicate, and challenge inherited notions of social and cultural hierarchy across the United States. The program pursues its mission by annually welcoming applications for new live performance projects. Each year, MAP hires a different cohort of peer reviewers who recommend the projects they believe most align with MAP's goals through a rigorous, facilitated review process. MAP awards $1 million to up to 40 projects in the range of $10,000 - $45,000 per grant.

The New England Foundation for the Arts is accepting applications from performing arts presenters for its New England States Touring grant program. The program is designed to support presentations by New England-based performing artists outside a presenter's state. Grants are available in amounts of up to 50 percent of the artists' fees and typically range from $400 to $4,000. Requests below $400 will not be accepted. Artists' fees may include expenses associated with the creation of new work, travel, and per diem.

An organization that applies to the Challenge America category, may not submit another application to the Grants for Arts Projects category. You may apply to other National Endowment for the Arts funding opportunities, including Our Town, in addition to Challenge America. In each case, the request must be for a distinctly different project or a distinctly different phase of the same project, with a different period of performance and costs. The Arts Endowment's support of a project may start on or after January 1, 2021. Grants awarded under these guidelines generally may cover a period of performance of up to two years. An organization that has received Challenge America grants in FY 2018, 2019, and 2020 may not apply for a Challenge America grant under these FY 2021 guidelines. That organization may apply for FY 2021 support under other National Endowment for the Arts funding opportunities including Grants for Arts Projects. Grant Program Description The Challenge America category offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Age alone (e.g., youth, seniors) does not qualify a group as underserved; at least one of the underserved characteristics noted above also must be present. Provide details about the underserved audience you select in your application using relevant statistics and anecdotal information. Proposals should detail the efforts made to reach the identified underserved population. Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development
