This award is designed to support young scientists just embarking on their independent research careers.  The applicants' research interests should be consonant with those of the March of Dimes' mission: The  Mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes defines a birth defect as any abnormality of structure or function, whether inherited, or acquired in utero and presenting in infancy or early childhood. Deviations from reproductive health of women and men as an underlying basis of birth defects, i.e. preconceptional events, perinatal course, and premature births, are appropriate subjects for research support. Relevance is interpreted broadly to include fundamental cell biology (embryogenesis, cell lineage, differentiation), genetics and genomics, fundamental cellular and clinical pathogenesis of disorders of importance to mothers and infants, biomedical engineering and imaging, and social and behavioral aspects. Each application should be accompanied by a Letter of Support from a Nominator (see below). The award is $150,000 for two years, including 10 percent indirect costs to sponsoring institutions.

Call for Nominations for the American Psychological Foundation's 2014 Division 37 Diane J. Willis Early Career Award, which supports talented young psychologists making contributions towards informing, advocating for, and improving the mental health and well-being of children and families particularly through policy.

The American Psychological Foundation's Henry David Fund was established to support young psychologists with a demonstrated interest in the behavioral aspects of human reproductive behavior or an area related to population concerns. The fund sponsors two grants annually:  The Research Grant provides up to $1,500 for support of ongoing research in behavioral aspects of population studies or human reproductive behavior.  The Travel Grant provides up to $1,500 to support travel related to research on human reproductive behavior and population studies or attendance at an international or regional congress.

The Foundation accepts applications for grants to conduct research on the effects of alcohol consumption on health and behavior. The following areas are of greater interest: Studies on how particular patterns of consumption (quantity of alcohol consumed, types of alcoholic beverages consumed, frequency of consumption and context) are related to health and behavioral outcomes. Interdisciplinary, bio-informatics, and other approaches to elucidate genetic and environmental factors that influence the patterns of consumption of alcoholic beverages and related consequences. The Foundation encourages basic and clinical research, including epidemiology. Examples of research topics include factors influencing underage drinking, mechanisms of alcohol-related organ injury, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, and effects of alcohol on general health.   The Foundation gives preference to young investigators, but does not support students or trainees in pre- or post-doctoral programs. It does not fund thesis or dissertation research. Grants are made to academic and research institutions in the United States, Canada and South Africa, not to individuals. Evidence of support for the investigator from the institution is desirable. 

Candidates must indicate an interest in schizophrenia research and, if possible, provide evidence of continuing and future involvement and activity in the field.  Individuals must be graduate students, residents, fellows or new/young faculty members that have completed their last training in the last 5 years.  Candidates who are members of an ethnic minority group or from a low income country, underrepresented in biomedical science areas, are strongly encouraged to apply.  Awardees are required to submit a poster or oral presentation abstract.  Awardees will also participate in the meeting as rapporteurs of oral sessions and their reports will be edited into a published summary of the congress after it occurs.  Application deadline is Monday, 21 October 2013.  The travel award recipients will be announced on Friday, 22 November.

The Society of Biological Psychiatry offers an annual award of $2,000 each in basic science and in clinical science for the purpose of stimulating international research in biological psychiatry by young investigators.

The training of a new generation of psychiatric academicians is a major objective of the Society of Biological Psychiatry.  Participation in professional meetings, where new information is exchanged and contacts are made, can have a critical impact on the career of a developing clinician-scientist. In recognition of the importance of academic exchange, the Society of Biological Psychiatry (SOBP) annually selects distinguished junior scientists to be a part of our Travel Fellowship Award program. Each travel fellowship award includes: $1,500 to help defray the travel and living cost to attend the 2014 annual meeting Waived registration to attend the 2014 meeting Waived registration to attend the 2015 and 2016 annual meeting (no financial award) An SOBP member mentor assigned to you during the meeting Opportunity to present a poster or oral abstract without an SOBP member sponsor Recognition events in honor of the Travel Fellowship Award recipeints To receive the travel award, applicants are expected to attend the entire meeting, be present for the recognition events, submit an abstract for a poster or oral presentation, and participate in the mentor/mentee program for young investigators.  These awards are supported by the Society of Biological Psychiatry and Elsevier, publisher of the Society's journal, Biological Psychiatry.

The AACAP Pilot Research Award for Learning Disabilities, supported by The Elaine Schlosser Lewis Fund, offers $15,000 for child and adolescent psychiatry residents and junior faculty who have an interest in beginning a career in child and adolescent mental health research. By providing one award to a child and adolescent psychiatry junior faculty member or resident for pilot research on learning disabilities, we support a young investigator at a critical stage, encouraging a future career in child and adolescent psychiatry research. The recipient has the opportunity to submit a poster presentation on his or her research for AACAP's 62nd Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX, October 26 - November 1, 2015.

The Consolidated Grant Program to Address Children and Youth Experiencing Domestic and Sexual Assault and Engage Men and Boys as Allies, hereafter referred to as the Consolidated Youth Program, supports activities that were previously funded under the following four OVW grant programs: Grants to Assist Children and Youth Exposed to Violence Program (CEV); Services to Advocate for and Respond to Youth Program (Youth Services); Services, Training, Education and Policies to Reduce Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking in Secondary Schools Grant Program (STEP); and the Engaging Men and Boys in Preventing Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking Program (Engaging Men). The Consolidated Youth Program creates a unique opportunity for communities to increase collaboration among non-profit victim service providers, violence prevention and children (0-10), youth (11-18), young adult (19-24) and men-serving organizations, tribes and tribal governments, local government agencies, schools, and programs that support men's role in combating violence against women and girls. 

The annual award recognizes a senior researcher who has made a significant contribution to research on the causes and treatment of schizophrenia as both a researcher and a mentor. A $1,500 award will be made to the senior researcher, and $20,000 will support the research career development of a young research psychiatrist working in a mentor-trainee relationship with the award winner on further research in this field.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) and Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2015 Statewide Peer Networks for Recovery and Resiliency (Short Title: Statewide Peer Networks for R&R) grants. The purpose of this grant program is to create and/or enhance statewide networks that represent mental health and addictions recovery communities to improve access to and the quality of behavioral health systems, services, treatment and recovery supports statewide. Formal SAMHSA-funded networks already exist in many states for specific recovery and family communities; this program is designed specifically to bridge and unify recovery networks for mental health consumers, families of children with serious emotional disturbance and youth, as well as those in recovery from addictions. Current SAMHSA-funded Recovery Community Services Program-Statewide Networks (RCSP-SNs), and current and formerly-funded Statewide Consumer Networks (SCNs) grants and Statewide Family Networks (SFNs) will work together to enhance and promote cross-service system, peer workforce, and infrastructure development that is recovery-focused and resiliency-oriented. This program builds on the FY 2014 program for RCSP-SNs, SFNs, and SCNs to develop intentional, collaborative efforts via Memoranda of Agreement (MOA) and sharing of fiscal resources. The intent of this program is for RCSP-SN, SFN, and SCN grantees within a state to form a collaboration that will develop a strategic plan, share resources, engage in cross-training, increase capacity to affect behavioral health systems change at the state and local levels, and to improve behavioral health outcomes for persons in recovery from serious mental illness and/or substance use disorders, and family members of children with serious emotional disturbances and youth/young adults. The Mentored Clinical Research Award (MCRA) for new investigators is funded by a grant from the Parkinson's Disease Foundation (PDF) to the Parkinson Study Group (PSG). The PDF collaborates with the PSG to encourage the professional and scientific development of young investigators on their path to independence. To this end, this grant supports a new investigator for a one year project in patient oriented research in Parkinson's disease (PD) or other parkinsonian disorders. The new investigator works under the mentorship of an experienced investigator. Training should enhance the junior clinical research skills. The research plan should address unmet needs of people living with PD, have the potential for broad application among the PD community, and lead to advances in clinically relevant treatment options.

The goal of this FOA is to test whether or not the ages of laboratory animals is an important consideration in experimental outcomes in the study of disease pathology, degenerative condition, response to therapy, intervention or environmental exposure. The majority of studies of human conditions and diseases in laboratory animals are done using young animals. 

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2019 National Center of Excellence for Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (Short Title: CoE-IECMHC) grant. The purpose of this program is to advance the implementation of high quality infant and early childhood mental health consultation (IECMHC) across the nation through the development of tools, resources, training, and mentorship to the infant and early childhood mental health field. The primary goals of the CoE are to promote the healthy social and emotional development of infants and young children, and to prevent, to the greatest extent possible, the onset of serious emotional disturbance (SED). The CoE has been and will continue to be instrumental in helping states, tribes, and communities to support early childhood providers and help them to achieve their goals of healthy children and families, school readiness, and success in school and beyond.

The American Psychological Association is accepting applications to its Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Fellowship program, which is designed to nurture young scholars interested in a career child psychology, including child-clinical, pediatric, school, educational, and developmental psychopathology.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2019 Transforming Lives through Supported Employment grants (Short Title: Supported Employment Program). The purpose of the program is to support state and community efforts to refine, implement, and sustain evidence-based supported employment programs and mutually compatible and supportive evidence-based practices (e.g., supported education) for transition-aged youth/young adults (ages 16-25) with serious emotional disturbance (SED), and adults with serious mental illness (SMI) or co-occurring mental and substance use disorders (COD). SAMHSA expects that this program will increase state and community capacity to implement and sustain Supported Employment Program (SEP) models and integrated supports to improve competitive employment outcomes for individuals with SED, SMI, or COD.

Approximately 100,000 adolescents and young adults in the United States experience a first episode of psychosis (FEP) every year. The early phase of psychotic illness is widely viewed as a critical opportunity for indicated prevention, and a chance to alter the downward trajectory and poor outcomes associated with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Unfortunately, numerous studies find a substantial delay between the onset of psychotic symptoms and the initiation of FEP care; in the U.S. treatment is typically delayed between one and three years. Early identification of FEP, rapid referral to evidence-based Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) for early psychosis, and effective engagement in CSC services are essential to shortening the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) and pre-empting the functional deterioration common in psychotic disorders. The World Health Organization advocates reducing DUP to 3 months or less. Accordingly, this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks planning research project grant applications that (1) identify a baseline rate of DUP in community or institutional settings; (2) map referral pathways to CSC care, (3) identify bottlenecks and gaps in the pathway to CSC care, and (4) develop and pilot test feasible strategies for substantially reducing DUP among persons with FEP.

NIMH seeks applications for pilot projects to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness of augmented or modified interventions designed to promote sustained improvement in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and functional impairments across settings and transitions in children, adolescents, and young adults. An emphasis is placed on trials that go beyond seeking incremental gains in intervention effects, and instead take a theory-driven, empirical approach to applying modifications that will have a significant and enduring impact on functioning. In this pilot phase of effectiveness research, the trial should be designed to evaluate the feasibility, tolerability, acceptability, safety, and potential effectiveness of the approach; to address whether the intervention engages the target mechanism(s) presumed to underlie the intervention effects; and to obtain necessary preliminary data as a pre-requisite to a larger-scale, definitive effectiveness trial.
