The Jamie Guilbeau and Thelma Guilbeau UL Lafayette Collections Research Grant - 0 views

    To promote the use of research collections housed at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the Department of History, Geography, and Philosophy and the Guilbeau Center for Public History is pleased to announce the Jamie Guilbeau and Thelma Guilbeau UL Lafayette Collections Research Grant in the amount of $2,000 for a researcher who IS NOT A FACULTY MEMBER, STAFF MEMBER, OR STUDENT AT UL LAFAYETTE. Proposals should indicate promise of publication or reaching a broad audience in some other form and require work in the collections of the University Archives and Acadiana Manuscripts Collections, the Ernest J. Gaines Center, the Cajun and Creole Music Collection, the Center for Louisiana Studies, or in other UL Lafayette collections. The grant is intended primarily to defray travel expenses, therefore preference will be given to researchers beyond commuting distance of UL Lafayette. Particular consideration will be given to applications that speak broadly to Louisiana and its history, heritage, cultures, and identities.

    The Fellowship Program for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan is a joint activity of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Awards support research on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan's international relations, and U.S.-Japan relations. The program encourages innovative research that puts these subjects in wider regional and global contexts and is comparative and contemporary in nature. Research should contribute to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of issues of concern to Japan and the United States. Clague and Carol Van Slyke Article Prize for best published article on New Netherland - 0 views

    The New Netherland Institute now offers an annual $1000 prize for the best published article relating to the Dutch colonial experience in the Atlantic world, with a special sensitivity to New Netherland or its legacy. A committee of scholars will consider entries in the fields of history, archaeology, literature, language, geography, biography, and the arts. Entries must be based upon original research. Articles must be written in English and be published for the first time no earlier than 2013. Chapters from a monograph, works of fiction, and encyclopedia entries will not be considered. Only one submission per author will be accepted. Both academic and independent scholars are invited to participate.

    The successful applicant will join a team of scholars led by Emeritus Professor James Warren and focusing on the Southeast Asian and Indo-Pacific regions. Investigations centre upon periods of acute environmental crisis, variously characterized by natural disasters, epidemic disease, socio-economic instability, and migration, bondage, and mass mortality. Within this framework, researchers will investigate current and traditional perceptions of environmental risk and risk management, explore past-to-present patterns to the human and environmental dimensions of crisis, and apply the results of historical research to enhance environmental risk and governance protocols. This groundbreaking initiative is not limited to the discipline of history, involving geography, anthropology, and the environmental sciences.
