The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to provide support for New Investigators from backgrounds nationally underrepresented in biomedical research to conduct small research projects in the scientific mission areas of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). Long-term misuse and chronic exposure to abused substances can produce widespread changes in brain structure and function. Although much progress has been made, additional research is still needed to identify the neurobiological changes that result from substance use, and how these changes contribute to substance use disorders. The overarching goals of the research areas described in this FOA are to understand the neurobiological mechanisms underlying substance use disorders, with special emphasis on identifying changes and neuroadaptations that occur during dependence, withdrawal, and relapse to chronic substance use. An understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying substance use disorders can help to identify targets for prevention and treatment interventions. Research utilizing basic, translational, or clinical approaches is appropriate.

A one-year, $10,000 grant will be awarded to a research team to investigate the utility of the guide, which was developed by the AED Medical Care Standards Taskforce, in increasing healthcare professionals' knowledge of eating disorders, as well as the degree to which the guide improves healthcare providers' ability to detect eating disorder symptoms in patients and make appropriate referrals to specialists. In addition, the research team will be expected to determine which media format is most appropriate for dissemination of the brochure (e.g., paper print, electronic copy, downloadable app, etc.).

The purpose of the program is to enhance and/or expand the capacity of substance use disorder treatment providers to serve youth and adults with substance use disorders or co-occurring substance use and mental disorders who have been underserved and/or have special needs (e.g., elderly, ethnic and racial minorities, criminal justice involved individuals, etc.). This is referred to as the "population of focus."

The association advances its work by raising public awareness and fostering social acceptance; working to advance scientific understanding, treatment options, and care; educating professionals to better serve the needs of children, adults, and families challenged by Tourette and tic disorders; advocating for public policies and services that promote positive school, work, and social environments; providing help, hope, and a supportive community across the nation; and empowering its community to deal with the complexities of this spectrum of disorders. To that end, grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded for basic and clinical studies related to any aspect of Tourette syndrome. To be eligible, investigators are required to have an advanced degree such as a PhD, MD, or equivalent or be an allied professional with an advanced degree in a related field. Investigators from nonprofit and for-profit organizations are eligible to apply. Pre-proposals must be received no later than November 1, 2017. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application by February 15, 2018.

This notice announces the opportunity to apply for funding under the Opioid Workforce Expansion Program (OWEP) Paraprofessionals program. The purpose of this program is to enhance community-based experiential training for students preparing to become peer support specialists and other types of behavioral health-related paraprofessionals with a focus on Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and other Substance Use Disorders (SUD) prevention, treatment and recovery services. Consistent with the statutory authority, applicants must also demonstrate a special focus on preservice or in-service training of paraprofessional child and adolescent mental health workers to understand the specific concerns of children, adolescents, and transitional-age youth in high need and high demand areas who are at risk for behavioral health disorders. The program is designed to expand and improve direct access to quality treatment and foster an integrated and/or interprofessional approach to address OUD and other SUD treatment emphasizing the role of the family and lived experience of the consumer through academic, community and non-traditional community organization partnerships. The program also supports career development in behavioral health for paraprofessional career progression as well as the development of skills and expertise of staff, facilitators, and training instructors in prevention, treatment, and recovery services of OUD and other SUDs. Award recipients will impact the behavioral health workforce by increasing the number of behavioral health-related paraprofessionals and transforming integrated and interprofessional teams to effectively prevent and treat OUD and other SUDs in community-based practices.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 National Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Recovery (Short Title: National Center - TFR). The purpose of this program is to establish a national center with specialized subject matter expertise to provide training and technical assistance to states, local governments, tribal communities, behavioral health organizations, primary care providers, clinicians, peers, families, and other stakeholders to help reduce tobacco use among persons with behavioral health disorders, with an emphasis on individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) and co-occurring disorders (COD). The expectation is that the National Center - TFR will build upon and expand SAMHSA' efforts to increase awareness, disseminate current research, educate behavioral health care providers, and create results-oriented collaborations among stakeholder organizations in an effort to reduce tobacco use among individuals with behavioral health disorders.

The award will support those in an early stage of their career who may lack the preliminary data required for an R01 grant, but who propose high impact research and who show promise of being tomorrow's leaders in the field. NIDA has developed two Avenir Award Programs, one for HIV/AIDS research and the other for genetics or epigenetics studies. The Genetics or Epigenetics of Substance Use Disorders Avenir Award program supports early stage investigators proposing highly innovative studies that open new areas of research for the genetics or epigenetics of addiction. These may be novel methods or approaches that can potentially be applied to the analysis of the genetics or epigenetics of addiction. Investigators outside the field of addiction interested in applying their novel approaches to the genetics or epigenetics of addiction are encouraged to apply. The award will support those in an early stage of their career who may lack the preliminary data required for an R01 grant, but who propose high impact research and who show promise of being tomorrow's leaders in the field of genetics or epigenetics of substance use disorders.

Supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), EMF is inviting applications for its EMF/NIDA Mentor-Facilitated Training Award in Substance Use Disorders Science Dissemination. The award seeks works that addresses the overarching goals of EMF, including the promotion of knowledge of evidence-based SUD treatment among healthcare providers; the dissemination of substance use disorder research finding; the adoption of evidence-based approaches in medical settings, and the facilitation of the academic growth and development of future leaders in SUD management.

Purpose NIMH seeks applications for innovative research projects to test strategies to increase the reach, efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of digital mental health interventions which may impact mental health outcomes, including suicide behaviors and serious mental illness. This FOA is intended to support the development of digital health test beds that leverage well-established digital mental health platforms/infrastructure to rapidly refine and optimize existing evidence based digital health interventions and conduct clinical trials testing digital mental health interventions that are statistically powered to provide a definitive answer regarding the intervention's effectiveness. Background The healthcare landscape in the United States is constantly changing, creating new challenges to the delivery of high-quality treatments and services to children, youth, adults, and older adults with unmet or under-met mental health needs. Epidemiological findings suggest that approximately one half of the United States population meets lifetime criteria for a mental disorder, and approximately one quarter of the population meets criteria in any given year. However, only one half of people with any mental health disorder and only two thirds of people with a serious mental health disorder received mental health services in the previous year. Of those that find their way into mental health care, many fall out of care and/or do not receive guideline concordant treatment, including suicide risk assessment and evidence-based preventive interventions. Disparities in population status (e.g., members of racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minority communities), a fragmented healthcare system, provider shortages, healthcare affordability, and other factors moderate these findings.

The Second Chance Act Programs are designed to help communities develop and implement comprehensive and collaborative strategies that address the challenges posed by reentry and recidivism reduction. "Reentry" is not a specific program, but rather a process that starts when an individual is initially incarcerated and ends when he or she has been successfully reintegrated in the community as a law-abiding citizen. The reentry process includes screening and assessment in a pre-release setting, the delivery of evidence-based programming in a pre-release setting, and the delivery of a variety of evidence-based programming for every program participant in a post-release setting designed to ensure that the transition from prison or jail to the community is safe and successful. The Reentry Program for Adult Offenders with Co-Occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Health Disorders is designed to improve outcomes for adults with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders through the screening and assessment of incarcerated individuals, availability of some pre-release programming, leading to the provision of appropriate evidence-based services and treatment after incarceration.

The purpose of this FOA is to enhance the capacity of surveillance programs to implement or enhance a population-based, multiple-source surveillance program for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities (DDs) that co-occur with ASD (cerebral palsy (CP) and intellectual disability (ID)). The project will fund sites to participate in the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network and will enhance surveillance activities at both prior and newly participating sites through two funding components. Component A funds surveillance of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other DDs (i.e. CP and ID) among 8-year-olds. Component B funds surveillance of ASD among 4-year-olds. Component A is required for all applicants, while applying for Component B funding is optional. In this FOA, five project period short-term outcomes will be achieved through five strategies and their corresponding activities. The five expected outcomes include: improved understanding of ASD & other DDs, including trends and disparities in ASD prevalence over time; improved understanding of the implications of the change from DSM-IV TR to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for ASD; stronger relationships with partners and data sources; increased dissemination of ADDM data; improved reliability and efficiency of ADDM surveillance.
