Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, Fire Prevention and Safety Grants - 0 views

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Grants Programs Directorate is responsible for the implementation and administration of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. The Grant Programs Directorate administers the Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant Program as part of the AFG Program. The purpose of the FP&S Grant Program is to enhance the Safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and fire-related hazards by assisting fire prevention programs and supporting firefighter health and Safety research and development. FP&S Grants are offered to support projects in two activities: (1) activities designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate the incidence of death, injuries, and property damage caused by fire and fire-related hazards ("Fire Prevention and Safety Activity") and (2) research and development activities aimed at improving firefighter Safety, health, or wellness through research and development that reduces firefighter fatalities and injuries ("Firefighter Safety Research and Development Activity"). The program guidance document provides potential applicants with the details of the requirements, processing, and evaluation of an application for financial assistance for both of these activity areas.

    The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) permanently established the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research under the direction of an Associate Director, within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. One purpose of this office is to enhance the development of new technology and technological applications and to ensure adequate capacity in important research areas. The MINER Act grants the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research the authority to award competitive contracts and grants to institutions and private entities to improve mine Safety and health in general, and specifically to encourage the development and manufacture of mine Safety equipment and to award contracts to education institutions or private laboratories for the performance of product testing or related work with respect to new mine technology or equipment. This announcement is an opportunity for the award of contracts for ground control research and capacity building.

    The USDOT seeks to develop, evaluate, and test vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) applications for the light vehicle fleet that are intended to transform surface transportation safety, mobility, and environmental performance through a connected vehicle environment. These efforts are outlined in RITA's ITS Strategic Research Plan, 2010-2014. The FHWA has a lead role in the selection, development, and testing of the applications. V2I applications are those applications wherein vehicle-based sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications are not considered adequate for development of information, alerts, or warnings for drivers. Rather, additional information is required from the infrastructure in order to enable the applications. These applications, however, are vehicle-based, in that they are programs resident in the on-board equipment of the vehicle. The on-board systems use information from vehicle-based sensors, V2V communications, and V2I communications to determine if information, alerts, or warnings should be provided to the driver. Automobile manufacturers (OEMs) are critical partners in development of vehicle-based applications and processes. The Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership (CAMP) partnership was formed between Ford Motor Company and General Motors to accelerate development and implementation of crash avoidance countermeasures in light vehicles to improve traffic safety. The CAMP partnership forms a consortium of all OEMs that desire to cooperatively work together and with the USDOT on specific research areas, such as V2I applications. This cooperative agreement is with CAMP and is intended to facilitate the selection, development, and evaluation of V2I safety, mobility and environmental applications, and to conduct other Connected Vehicle program work that involves communications between vehicles, infrastructure, and pedestrians and bicyclists.

Because of this, the participating EERE offices see these professionals as key to enabling understanding and acceptance of new energy technologies.
