    The Mathematics and Physical Sciences division at the Simons Foundation is inviting Letters of Intent for the Simons Collaborations in MPS program, the aim of which is to stimulate progress on fundamental scientific questions of major importance in mathematics, theoretical physics, and theoretical computer science.

    To that end, grants of up to $2 million per year for up to four years will be awarded in support of collaborative projects that address a mathematical or theoretical topic of fundamental scientific importance and where a significant new development has the potential to create a novel area for exploration or provides a new direction for progress in an established field. The questions addressed by the collaboration may be concrete or conceptual, but there should be little doubt that answering them would constitute a major scientific milestone. The project also should have clearly defined initial activities and goals by which its progress and success can be measured.

    The purpose of this administrative supplement is to facilitate translational research partnerships between junior researchers with quantitative backgrounds (in engineering or computational or physical sciences) and junior clinician-scientists from active CTSA institutions (PAR-15-304, PAR-18-464). The supplement will support the quantitative researcher, the NIBIB Translational Research Scholar, contingent upon his/her collaborating with a clinician-scientist KL2 scholar, the "partnering clinician-scientist". The partnering clinician-scientist will be supported independently of this supplement through the parent KL2 award throughout the duration of the proposed supplement. Both team members will be selected by the KL2 PI. The KL2 PI will assist the NIBIB Translational Research Scholar and the partnering clinician-scientist in developing a translational research project aligned with NIBIBs research mission under the guidance of their identified basic and clinical/translational science mentors.     Although invention and proof-of-concept testing of new technologies are a key component of the BRAIN Initiative, to achieve their potential these technologies must also be optimized through feedback from end-users in the context of the intended experimental use. This seeks applications for the optimization of existing and emerging technologies and approaches that have potential to address major challenges associated with recording and manipulating neural activity, at or near cellular resolution, at multiple spatial and temporal scales, in any region and throughout the entire depth of the brain. This FOA is intended for the iterative refinement of emergent technologies and approaches that have already demonstrated their transformative potential through initial proof-of-concept testing, and are appropriate for accelerated development of hardware and software while scaling manufacturing techniques towards sustainable, broad dissemination and user-friendly incorporation into regular neuroscience practice. Proposed technologies should be compatible with experiments in behaving animals, and should include advancements that enable or reduce major barriers to hypothesis-driven experiments. Technologies may engage diverse types of signaling beyond neuronal electrical activity for large-scale analysis, and may utilize any modality such as optical, electrical, magnetic, acoustic or genetic recording/manipulation.     Understanding the dynamic activity of neural circuits is central to the NIH BRAIN Initiative.     The program supports four main research thrusts that are envisioned to advance the goal of ubiquitous co-robots: scalability, customizability, lowering barriers to entry, and societal impact. Topics addressing scalability include how robots can collaborate effectively with multiple humans or other robots; how robots can perceive, plan, act, and learn in uncertain, real-world environments, especially in a distributed fashion; and how to facilitate large-scale, safe, robust and reliable operation of robots in complex environments. Customizability includes how to enable co-robots to adapt to specific tasks, environments, or people, with minimal modification to hardware and software; how robots can personalize their interactions with people; and how robots can communicate naturally with humans, both verbally and non-verbally.
