This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites applications for P50 Research Center Grants for Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs). The program will fund P50 SPORE grants to support state-of-the-art investigator-initiated translational research that will contribute to improved prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of an organ-specific cancer or a related group of cancers. For the purpose of this FOA, cancers derived from the same organ system (i.e., a group of organs that perform a common function) are considered related. Examples of such organ systems include gastrointestinal, endocrine and other biological systems. Other programmatically appropriate groups of cancers may include those centered around a common biological mechanism critical for promoting tumorigenesis and/or cancer progression in organ sites that belong to different organ systems. For example, a SPORE may focus on cancers caused by the same infectious agent or cancers sustained and promoted by dysregulation of a common signaling pathway. In addition, a SPORE may focus on cross-cutting themes such as pediatric cancers or cancer health disparities. The research supported through this program must be translational and must stem from research on human biology using cellular, molecular, structural, biochemical, and/or genetic experimental approaches. SPORE projects must have the goal of reaching a translational human endpoint within the project period of the grant.

The Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announces its interest in receiving grant applications from U.S. universities/institutions of higher education for basic research to investigate some of the outstanding scientific questions in the synthesis of ammonia (NH3) from nitrogen (N2) using processes that do not generate greenhouse gases (such as CO2, NOx, etc.). Of interest is molecular level research that will provide the scientific basis for novel catalysts and mechanisms for nitrogen activation. Ideally, this research should produce fundamental knowledge that will lead to future catalytic processes for ammonia synthesis that are energy efficient, use renewable sources of energy, and do not produce greenhouse gases. This FOA will not consider proposals on process or reactor design, optimization or plant-level intensification. Research will not be supported whose primary goal(s) or challenge(s) are hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, CO2 capture or conversion, or outside the specific focus on nitrogen activation. This FOA seeks applications on research to develop techniques, tools, and methodologies that improve detection and assessment of CO2 stored in the target reservoir. Research products developed under this FOA are expected to include monitoring tools and techniques, as well as validation of models and modeling techniques. Successful technologies developed under this FOA will decrease the operator's financial burden associated with long-term monitoring by providing them the capability to assess the position of the CO2 plume in the target reservoir with greater certainty throughout the life cycle of the project (i.e., active- and post-injection).
