    The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to build upon the work that has begun under previous FOA RFA-TR-17-007 NCATS Pilot Program for Collaborative Drug Discovery Research Using Bioprinted Skin Tissue and utilize physiologically relevant and validated 3-D biofabricated skin disease tissue models in multi-well drug screening platforms. The FOA will support intramural- extramural collaborations to implement the use of 3-D biofabricated skin tissue models and provide evidence of success for 3-D drug screening platforms.

    The ReVector program aims to develop methods to use human skin microbiomes to modulate chemical signatures in order to avoid mosquito attraction and feeding and reduce the threat of mosquito-borne disease to Warfighters. Human skin associated microbes interact with metabolites from the body and influence the personal chemical signature of each individual, making some individuals more attractive to mosquitoes. This program seeks to develop advanced data analytics and microbiome modulation tools for engineering skin microbiomes and provide new options for the readiness and resiliency of military personnel.

    The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support the research and development necessary to advance spectroscopic imaging technologies, methods, study designs, and analyses to non-invasively measure the rate and extent to which a topically applied compound becomes available in the epidermis, at or near a site of action within the skin. The expectation is that the funded work will produce an accurate, sensitive and reproducible approach that measures the amount of drug present in the epidermis at each of a series of depths below the skin surface, which can be utilized to monitor epidermal pharmacokinetics by repeated measurements over time.

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage Research Project Grant (R01) applications to pursue clinical observational (CO) studies to obtain data necessary for designing clinical studies for musculoskeletal, rheumatic, or skin diseases or conditions. A future clinical study may include a clinical trial or an observational study. Research data from observational studies supported by this FOA can enhance clinical study design by providing essential information about disease symptoms, stages and timing of disease progression, comorbid conditions, availability of potential research participants, and outcomes that are important to patients. They also can facilitate efforts to develop and/or validate objective biomarkers or subjective outcome measures for use in a future clinical study. Applicants to this FOA are encouraged to propose studies that address significant obstacles or questions in the design of a clinical project, such as determining the appropriate primary or secondary outcome measures, or identifying the stages of disease during which patients are most likely to respond to an intervention. Only observational studies will be supported through this FOA.
