    The intention of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of vulvodynia.  By definition, vulvar discomfort or pain without a clear etiology is termed vulvodynia. Some organizations use the term vulvodynia to indicate vulvar pain of unknown etiology for more than 3 months.  For the purposes of this announcement, vulvodynia and vulvar pain will be used interchangeably.  The overall incidence of vulvodynia has been reported as 4.2 cases per 100 person-years in one population based study, with others estimating that persistent vulvar pain affects 9 to 18 percent of women at some point during their lifetime. Current evidence suggests that incidence rates vary by age, ethnicity and marital status.

Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (CARB) Biopharmaceutical Accelerator - 0 views

    The current pipeline of candidate antimicrobial products is insufficient to counter the threat of antimicrobial resistance . A novel collaborative model is needed to spur innovation and investment towards new antimicrobial products to repopulate the early development pipeline. In 2014, the United States Government released the National Strategy for Combating Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria. A component of the National Strategy is to establish a Biopharmaceutical Accelerator for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria [Accelerator] to fund Research and Development (R&D) activities to help progress candidate products from the proof-of-concept stage through pre-clinical development. Candidates that graduate from the Accelerator will be better positioned for R&D investment and clinical development. There are various Accelerator models in the marketplace. The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Accelerator will be a non-equity accelerator that provides non-dilutive funding to product developers for R&D activities and enables the product developers to retain full ownership and control of their company. The Accelerator for CARB will be focusing only on antibacterial products. BARDA will provide direct funding and NIAID will provide in-kind services (e.g. preclinical services, technical expertise) to the Accelerator [the cooperative agreement recipient] that will manage a portfolio of investments of early stage antimicrobial product candidates.

    Bioequivalence studies that compare a reference formulation to an investigational formulation are typically conducted in healthy adult volunteers and occasionally are conducted in patients. Some populations have unique physical, biological, and physiological considerations that are not reflected by healthy volunteers or by the typical patient for whom a drug is indicated. Physicians have expressed concerns about generic drug substitution (especially for narrow therapeutic index drugs) in special patient populations whose experience with a drug may not be represented by those in whom bioequivalence studies are conducted. For instance, for products that do not have age-appropriate formulations (e.g., formulations do not differ by age of patient), the use of generic products under "off-label" practice patterns in special populations such as crushing or dissolving tablets in liquid for pediatric patients may influence their equivalence to brand name products. Special populations include, but are not limited to, pediatric patients, elderly patients who take multiple medications, women (particularly those who are pregnant), racial/ethnic minorities, and/or individuals with impaired kidney or liver function.

    The Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announces its interest in receiving grant applications from U.S. universities/institutions of higher education for basic research to investigate some of the outstanding scientific questions in the synthesis of ammonia (NH3) from nitrogen (N2) using processes that do not generate greenhouse gases (such as CO2, NOx, etc.). Of interest is molecular level research that will provide the scientific basis for novel catalysts and mechanisms for nitrogen activation. Ideally, this research should produce fundamental knowledge that will lead to future catalytic processes for ammonia synthesis that are energy efficient, use renewable sources of energy, and do not produce greenhouse gases. This FOA will not consider proposals on process or reactor design, optimization or plant-level intensification. Research will not be supported whose primary goal(s) or challenge(s) are hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, CO2 capture or conversion, or outside the specific focus on nitrogen activation.     Students enrolled in any PhD program are eligible to apply, as are those who earned a PhD in 2016 or 2017. Given candidates with comparative skills and preparation, preference will be given to European-based scholars.     The American Society for Radiation Oncology is accepting applications for its 2019 Minority Summer Fellowship Award. The annual program is designed to introduce medical students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine to the discipline of radiation oncology early in their medical education. Although medical students in all years are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to first- and second-year students. In an effort to promote radiation oncology as a career choice, the fellowship will expose medical students to clinical, basic, and translational research questions in radiation oncology. The fellowship provides each student with a $4,500 package that includes a $3,500 stipend for the eight-week training program (exceptions can be made for a longer program but will need to be approved by ASTRO's Committee on Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, or "CHEDI") and $1,000 toward the cost of travel to the organization's 2019 annual meeting. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in a United States medical school and be able to identify a mentor with a successful record of research productivity. The mentor should be an ASTRO member. In addition, research must be undertaken at a North American institution during the summer of 2019.

    Sigma Xi, a society of research scientists and engineers that rewards excellence in research and cooperation among scientists in all fields, has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences and financial support for more than eighty years. By encouraging close working relationships between students and faculty, the society promotes scientific achievement through hands-on learning. Through the Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research program, the society awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision-related research. Funding can support travel expenses or nonstandard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project. While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding, approximately 75 percent of Grants-in-Aid of Research funds are restricted for use by dues-paying student members or students whose project advisor is a dues-paying member.     The purpose of the Mentored Quantitative Research Career Development Award (K25) is to attract to NIH-relevant research those investigators whose quantitative science and engineering research has thus far not been focused primarily on questions of health and disease. The K25 award will provide support and "protected time" for a period of supervised study and research for productive professionals with quantitative (e.g., mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, imaging science, informatics, physics, chemistry) and engineering backgrounds to integrate their expertise with NIH-relevant research. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing to lead basic science experimental studies involving humans, referred to in NOT-OD-18-212 as prospective basic science studies involving human participants. These studies fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also meet the definition of basic research. Types of studies that should submit under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific application towards processes or products in mind. Studies conducted with specific applications toward processes or products in mind should submit under the companion PA-18-395.
