PCORI seeks to fund pragmatic clinical trials, large simple trials, or large-scale observational studies that compare two or more alternatives for addressing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or management of a disease or symptom; improving healthcare system-level approaches to managing care; communicating or disseminating research results to patients, caregivers, or clinicians; or eliminating health or healthcare disparities. Proposed studies must address critical clinical choices faced by patients, their caregivers, clinicians, or delivery systems. They must involve broadly representative patient populations and be large enough to provide precise estimates of hypothesized effectiveness differences and to support evaluation of potential differences in treatment effectiveness in patient subgroups.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for research designed to optimize smoking cessation treatment among people living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States (U.S.). Responsive applications must propose research that will be conducted with PLWH and will inform efforts to reduce the incidence of tobacco-related disease and death among PLWH. Research may address the behavioral and sociocultural factors and conditions that are associated with cigarette smoking among PLWH, and may also address smoking-related health disparities among PLWH, considering the heterogeneity across the various subgroups of PLWH.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is accepting applications for the fiscal year (FY) 2018 Minority Fellowship Program (Short Title: MFP). The purpose of this program is to reduce behavioral health disparities and improve healthcare outcomes for racial and ethnic minority populations by: (1) increasing the knowledge of behavioral health professionals on issues related to treatment and recovery support for individuals who are from racial and ethnic minority populations and have a substance use disorder (SUD); (2) improving the quality of SUD treatment services delivered to racial and ethnic minority populations; and (3) increasing the number of culturally competent professionals in psychology focusing on services appropriate for those with SUDs, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine who teach, administer services, conduct research, and provide direct SUD services to racial and ethnic minority populations. The SUD treatment and recovery needs of racial and ethnic minority communities in the United States have been historically unmet due to the scarcity of practitioners equipped to address this population's needs. The MFP increases the number of behavioral health professionals with knowledge of issues related to treatment and recovery support for SUD among racial and ethnic minority populations. This program aims to specifically expand the training of professionals with a focus in psychology, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine.

The Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) announces the availability of administrative supplements to support interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research focused on the effect of sex/gender influences at the intersection of a number of social determinants, including but not limited to: race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, education, health literacy and other social determinants in human health and illness. This research includes preclinical, clinical and behavioral studies with the specific purpose to provide Administrative Supplements to active NIH parent grants for one year to address health disparities among women of populations in the US who are understudied, underrepresented and underreported in biomedical research.

The goal of this FOA is to support short courses geared to behavioral and social scientists who have existing expertise in aging research and can make research contributions in Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) with additional knowledge about the disease and related research resources. Fields of behavioral and social science research relevant for this FOA are health economics, labor economics, health services research, healthcare policy, public policy, demography, sociology, social epidemiology, psychology, and social neuroscience. Priority areas of focus include, but are not limited to, the following: dementia care; dementia caregiver research; cognitive and dementia epidemiology; behavioral and social pathways of AD/ADRD; role of social, contextual, environmental, and institutional factors in AD/ADRD; early psychological changes preceding AD/ADRD onset; prevention of AD/ADRD; disparities in AD/ADRD or dementia-related outcomes; and research resources and methods for studying the determinants and impact of AD/ADRD.

The Kitsap Community Foundation in Silverdale, Washington, has announced that it has an additional $90,000 to award in 2019 to small and medium-sized 501(c)(3) organizations doing work in the fields of behavioral health and health equity in Kitsap and North Mason counties. The new grant money was made available by Premera Blue Cross as part of Premera's Social Impact Program. Recognizing the important connection between behavioral health and overall health, Premera Blue Cross launched the program with the aim of supporting behavioral health issues, particularly in underserved communities. The program currently supports sixty-four evidence‐based programs and pilot projects with the potential for significant impact in Washington state and Alaska, and the focus of those programs and pilots, for the most part, is on prevention rather than intervention. Indeed, the foundation and Premera believe that by addressing behavioral health issues - especially for populations where community health data consistently shows treatment disparities exist - overall community health will improve. Grant amounts will range between $5,000 and $15,000, and priority will be given to proposals that serve underserved communities, including people of color, low‐income populations, rural populations, and children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences. Grant funds must be used during the 2020 calendar year.

The purpose of the NCI Mentored Clinical Scientist Career Development Award (K08) program is to prepare individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the nation. This program represents the continuation of a long-standing NIH program that provides support and protected time to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree for an intensive, supervised research career development experience in the fields of biomedical and behavioral research, including translational research. The NCI-sponsored K08 award is specifically designed to promote career development of clinical scientists from backgrounds that have been shown to be nationally underrepresented in health-related science and for those who are committed to a career in basic biomedical, behavioral or translational cancer research, including research on cancer health disparities. The expectation is that through this sustained period of research career development and training, awardees will develop enhanced research capabilities for cancer research careers and be better prepared to compete for research project grants (e.g. R03, R21, or R01) funding. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary study to an existing trial, as part of their research and career development. Applicants not planning an independent clinical trial, or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, must apply to companion FOA (PAR-18-337).

The purpose of this initiative is to support research to develop and test youth violence prevention interventions that incorporate racism/discrimination prevention strategies for one or more health disparity populations. The target age range includes middle school to high school-aged youth, corresponding to an approximate age range of 11 to 18.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits behavioral, social, and implementation science research designed to (a) identify gaps in the HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) care continuum and associated determinants; (b) develop and test interventions to strengthen PrEP delivery, use, and outcomes; and (c) reduce racial/ethnic and age-related disparities in PrEP uptake and use This FOA uses the R01 grant mechanism while corresponding FOA PA-18-271 uses the R21 mechanism.
