In recognition of the importance of experiencing original works of art, the Terra Foundation for American Art supports exhibitions that enlarge the understanding and appreciation of historical American art made between 1500 and 1980. To be eligible for funding, exhibitions that take place internationally or in Chicago may be aimed at the general public, scholars, or both; exhibitions that take place only in the United States, but outside of Chicago, must present historical American art in an international context and reach a scholarly audience. The foundation has a particular interest in exhibitions that add an international dimension to the study or presentation of historical American art or take place in Chicago, the location of the foundation's headquarters. "International dimensions" vary by project, but include a venue outside the United States; a focused thesis that makes a significant contribution to scholarship on historical American art in an international context; and an international curatorial team. Exhibition proposals will be reviewed by an outside panel of scholars and curators who are specialists in historical American art.

An organization that applies to the Challenge America category, may not submit another application to the Art Works category. - You may apply to other National Endowment for the Arts funding opportunities, including Our Town, in addition to Challenge America. In each case, the request must be for a distinctly different project or a distinctly different phase of the same project, with a different period of performance and costs. - The Arts Endowment's support of a project may start on or after January 1, 2020. Grants awarded under these guidelines generally may cover a period of performance of up to two years. An organization that has received Challenge America grants in FY 2017, 2018, and 2019 may not apply for a Challenge America grant under these FY 2020 guidelines. That organization may apply for FY 2020 support under other National Endowment for the Arts funding opportunities including Art Works. Program Description The Challenge America category offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.

Through the program, ten fellowships of $36,000 (with an additional $4,000 in the form of a travel and research allowance) will be awarded to graduate students at any stage of PhD dissertation research or writing who are exploring topics in the history of the visual arts of the United States. The fellowships are portable and may be carried out in residence at the fellow's home institution or at another appropriate site. Projects should be focused foremost on the art object and/or image and employ an art-historical or visual studies approach. Although the topic may be historically and/or theoretically grounded, proposals whose emphases are predominantly socio-historical will not be considered. Students with appropriate projects whose degrees will be granted by departments other than art history are eligible only if the principal dissertation advisor is in a department of art history. Students preparing theses for the Master of Fine Arts degree are not eligible.

The Our Town grant program supports creative placemaking projects that help to transform communities into lively, beautiful, and resilient places - achieving these community goals through strategies that incorporate arts, culture, and/or design. Creative placemaking is when artists, arts organizations, and community development practitioners deliberately integrate arts and culture into community revitalization work - placing arts at the table with land-use, transportation, economic development, education, housing, infrastructure, and public safety strategies. This funding supports local efforts to enhance quality of life and opportunity for existing residents, increase creative activity, and create or preserve a distinct sense of place.Through Our Town, subject to the availability of funding, the National Endowment for the Arts will provide a limited number of grants for creative placemaking. Our Town requires partnerships between arts organizations and government, other nonprofit organizations, and private entities to achieve livability goals for communities.Our Town offers support for projects in two areas:* Arts Engagement, Cultural Planning, and Design Projects.

"The Arts . . . belong to all the people of the United States" * Grants for Arts Projects is the National Endowment for the Arts' principal grants program. Through project-based funding, we support public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation, the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, learning in the arts at all stages of life, and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life. Projects may be large or small, existing or new, and may take place in any part of the nation's 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.

The Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize recognizes excellent scholarship by a non-U.S. scholar in the field of historical American art. Manuscripts should advance the understanding of American art, demonstrating new findings and original perspectives. The prize winner will be given the opportunity to work toward publication in American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum's scholarly journal. He or she will also receive a $1,000 cash award and a travel stipend of up to $3,000 to give a presentation in Washington, D.C., and meet with museum staff and fellows. This annual prize is supported by funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

The Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination (AEMDD) program supports the enhancement, expansion, documentation, evaluation, and dissemination of innovative, cohesive models that are based on research and have demonstrated that they effectively-(1) integrate standards- based arts education into the core elementary and middle school curriculum; (2) strengthen standards-based arts instruction in these grades; and (3) improve students' academic  performance, including their skills in creating, performing, and responding to the arts. Projects funded through the AEMDD program are intended to increase the amount of nationally available information on effective models for arts education that integrate the arts with standards-based education programs.

Candidates must have a dissertation focused on a topic in the history of the visual arts of the United States. While the topic may be historically and/or theoretically grounded, attention to the art object and/or image should be foremost. Projects also must be object-oriented and use art-historical or visual studies approaches. Proposals whose emphases are predominantly socio-historical will not be considered. Applicants must have completed all requirements for the PhD except the dissertation before beginning their fellowship and must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Applicants must be a PhD candidate in a department of art history in the United States. A student with an appropriate project whose degree will be granted by another department is eligible only if the principal dissertation advisor is in a department of art history. (Students preparing theses for the MFA degree are not eligible.)

The Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, is accepting submissions for the 2013 Archives of American Art Graduate Research Essay Prize Funded by the Dedalus Foundation, Inc., to be given to compelling original research using the resources of the Archives of American Art as primary evidence. Authors should present an original argument by marshaling evidence from the holdings of the Archives of American Art. For example, authors may interpret a series of letters or photographs, a diary, oral history interviews. Authors may also analyze a range of primary sources to contextualize and interpret historical events from a fresh perspective. Submissions that incorporate digital tools such as hyperlinks, mapping, word clouds, text mining, interactive timelines, and social media platforms may be favored. Authors may indicate in the body of the essay where he or she would add or embed digital features that would enhance the online presentation of the essay.

The Arts Envoy Program annually enables approximately 200 American artists and cultural experts (known as Arts Envoys) to travel abroad for individual programs or as part of an ensemble or group to engage and consult with key foreign audiences through performances, workshops, meetings, seminars, and appearances in foreign media. By addressing topics identified and developed by U.S. Missions (generally U.S. Embassies and Consulates) worldwide in cooperation with ECA, the program promotes an understanding of U.S. policies and institutions, and the political, economic, social, and cultural context from which they arise. Arts Envoy individuals and groups are programmed in one or more countries with a variety of audiences from a wide range of disciplines in the cultural arena, including in the performing and visual arts, and in arts management, as well as with museum professionals and other cultural experts. The University of Delaware Library and the Delaware Art Museum invite applications for the 2014 joint Fellowship in Pre-Raphaelite Studies. This one-month Fellowship is intended for scholars working on the Pre-Raphaelites and their associates. Up to $3,000 is available. The Delaware Art Museum is home to the most important collection of Pre-Raphaelite art in the US. Assembled largely by Samuel Bancroft, Jr., the collection includes paintings, works on paper, decorative arts, manuscripts, and letters, and is augmented by the museum's Helen Farr Sloan art library. With comprehensive holdings in books, periodicals, electronic resources, and microforms, the University of Delaware Library is a major resource for the study of literature and art. The Special Collections Department contains material related to the Pre-Raphaelites, who are also well-represented in the Mark Samuels Lasner Collection of Victorian books, manuscripts, and artworks.

The College Art Association is accepting Letters of Inquiry for book-length scholarly manuscripts under contract with a publisher in a range of areas, including the history of American art, visual studies, and related subjects. For the purposes of this grant program, "American art" is defined as art (circa 1500-1980) produced in what is now the geographic United States.

Funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and administered by Creative Capital, the Arts Writers Grant Program was launched in 2006 to support emerging and established writers who engage with issues of contemporary visual art. Through the program, published authors who identify as art historians, artists, critics, curators, or journalists, or who are writers in an outside field and are strongly engaged with the contemporary visual arts, can apply for grants ranging between $15,000 and $50,000. Grants will be awarded in four categories: articles, blogs, books, and short-form writing.

The U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs Section in Moscow (PAS Moscow) invites proposal submissions for a cooperative agreement to provide technical and logistical support for arts and cultural programming in Russia. The grant recipient will work closely with Public Affairs and Cultural Affairs at Mission Russia to identify and select American artists and performers to bring to Russia for short-term programs. Performances may include, but are not limited to music, dance, theater and film/television acting, and culinary arts. The grant may occasionally include programs for artists in the spheres of photography, comic books and graphic arts, computer art and design, arts management, painting, and other visual and graphic art. Individual athletes or groups of athletes may also be supported through this program to demonstrate their talent. The grantee will be responsible for assisting with support in the form of fee negotiation with the artists, visa assistance, in-country and international transportation arrangements, airport pickup, event promotion, procurement of educational and printed materials, and other technical and logistical support as directed by PAS Moscow. Additional examples of supporting activities include reimbursing artists for program-related expenditures and processing vendor payments for travel expenses, support, or other items.

Grants may be used for artists' fees for creative time, production costs for performances or films, exhibition/installation costs for visual, media, or interdisciplinary arts, and projects that aid the organization's overall artistic development.
