This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits Edward R. Roybal Centers for Translation Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences of Aging. Center resources are intended for the development and piloting of new and innovative ideas for early stage as well as late stage translation of basic behavioral and social research findings about established or hypothesized mechanisms of action, at the individual or population level, into programs and practices that will improve the lives of older people and the capacity of institutions to adapt to societal aging.

RFA-AG-14-001: Dose Response and Efficacy Studies on the Effects of Vitamin D Supplemen... - 0 views

  •
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) invites applications for a clinical trial on effects of vitamin D supplementation on falls and gait speed in older individuals. During the six-year support period, the awardee will implement a randomized controlled trial with sufficient power to determine the dose-response and efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in preventing falls, across a range of doses and baseline vitamin D levels.  A measurement of effects of supplementation on gait speed should be proposed as a secondary outcome.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to consider advanced, cost-efficient designs that include a dose-ranging phase followed by an efficacy phase for select doses (e.g., adaptive designs). The first nine months of the award will provide funds to conduct pilot studies to test recruitment strategies, determine the proportion of those screened who are both eligible and willing to be randomized, and finalize the study protocol, data collection forms and manual of procedures for the trial.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) is to solicit two-year Research Project Grant (R01) applications that propose to explore the potential for midlife plasticity of biobehavioral or psychological systems affected by early life disadvantage. In order to speed the development of novel intervention strategies, applicants are encouraged either to use existing human cohort data to identify circumstances that mitigate or exacerbate the effects of early adversity or to use human and/or animal models to test the feasibility of developing interventions aimed specifically at increasing malleability in adulthood of risk persistence mechanisms.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), working in part with funds contributed by the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (http://obssr.od.nih.gov/index.aspx ), is to provide infrastructure support for advancing development of specific emerging and high priority interdisciplinary areas of behavioral and social research of relevance to aging. The infrastructure support will facilitate research networks through meetings, conferences, small scale pilots, training, and dissemination to encourage growth and development of specified priority areas and of resources for the field at large. Projects are solicited that will develop, strengthen, and evaluate transdisciplinary approaches and methods for basic behavioral and/or social research.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit innovative social, behavioral, health services, and policy research that can directly and demonstrably contribute to the elimination of health disparities. Projects may involve primary data collection or secondary analysis of existing datasets. Projects that examine understudied health conditions; examine the effectiveness of interventions, services, or policies for multiple health disparity populations; and/or directly measure the impact of project activities on levels of health disparities are particularly encouraged.

The purpose of this FOA is to provide network and infrastructure support to foster development of novel interdisciplinary research approaches on aging research related to multiple chronic conditions (MCCs). This FOA uses the Resource-Related Research Project activity code (R24) to support research networks that will advance interdisciplinary collaboration through activities such as meetings, conferences, data exchange, small scale pilots, short term training opportunities, visiting scholar programs and dissemination activities to encourage growth and development in the science related to older adults with MCCs.

Practice Change Leaders - 0 views

  •
Our nation's health delivery system frequently does not meet the unique needs of older adults. Wide gaps remain between evidence-based approaches, nationally recognized best practices, and how care is currently delivered for many conditions that disproportionately affect this population. Strong leadership is needed to ensure that promising innovations are implemented to improve health and functional outcomes in older adults. The Practice Change Leaders program is a one-year opportunity to gain enhanced leadership skills and content expertise to positively influence care for older adults. Leaders complete a project aimed at integrating improved care for older adults within their organization, allowing them to remain at their full time job throughout the one-year program.

PAR-13-301: The Role of the Cytoskeleton in Cellular Aging (R21/R33) - 0 views

  •
The purpose of this FOA is to stimulate the development of innovative research strategies aimed at increasing the understanding of the molecular and cellular changes in the cytoskeleton that occur during the aging process.  Applications considering the effect of age on factors such as cytoskeleton structure and function, the impact of the cytoskeleton on intracellular organelle interactions, and signaling or regulatory molecules controlling cellular architecture are encouraged.  There is also interest in studying the role of the cytoskeleton in nuclear-cytoplasmic communications, and in spatio-temporal relationships during the aging process and in age-related diseases.

The purpose of the Aging Interventions Testing Program (ITP) is to test, under standardized conditions in multiple sites, potential intervention strategies which may decelerate the rate of aging in mammals. The rate of aging is to be measured by lifespan extension and/or improvements in health at later ages due to the intervention. The ITP has used life span as its primary outcome for an intervention, with limited studies on end-of-life pathologies and selected tests of health across the lifespan (health span). This FOA calls for renewal and expansion of the ITP with the following goals: 1. Continue to test compounds for effects on lifespan; 2. Increase analysis of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of compounds proposed for lifespan studies, including studies of optimal effective dose; 3. Increase histology and pathophysiology analyses at time-of-death; 4. Increase focused studies of health span on selected compounds; 5. Establish a data coordinating center.
