The AARP Foundation works to end senior poverty by helping vulnerable older adults build economic opportunity and social connectedness. As AARP's charitable affiliate, the foundation makes grants to organizations working to advance evidence-based projects that can become sustainable and practical solutions to the challenges facing low-income older adults.

This funding opportunity is designed for applicants to propose how they will develop capacity for, deliver, and sustain evidence-based self-management education and support programs that address behavioral health and/or chronic pain among older adults and adults with disabilities. Goal 1: Through robust partnerships, develop a result-based, comprehensive strategy for addressing behavioral health and/or chronic pain among older adults and adults with disabilities living in your community. Goal 2: Significantly increase the number of older adults and adults with disabilities who participate in evidence-based self-management education and/or self-management support programs to empower them to better manage these chronic condition(s), while concurrently pursuing the sustainability of these programs beyond the end of the grant period.

Through this funding opportunity, the Administration on Aging (AoA), part of the Administration for Community Living (ACL), plans to award 2-3 cooperative agreements to domestic public or private non-profit entities. The intent of these awards is to strengthen integrated networks that address the behavioral and social determinants of health of older adults and adults with disabilities, and increase the number of these individuals who participate in evidence-based chronic disease self-management education and self-management support programs. Goal 1: Strengthen integrated state or regional networks that address the social and behavioral determinants of health of older adults and adults with disabilities. Goal 2: Significantly increase the number of older adults and adults with disabilities who participate in chronic disease self-management education and self-management support programs.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research Education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this R25 program is to support Educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs.

The goal of this FOA is to support short courses geared to behavioral and social scientists who have existing expertise in aging research and can make research contributions in Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) with additional knowledge about the disease and related research resources. Fields of behavioral and social science research relevant for this FOA are health economics, labor economics, health services research, healthcare policy, public policy, demography, sociology, social epidemiology, psychology, and social neuroscience. Priority areas of focus include, but are not limited to, the following: dementia care; dementia caregiver research; cognitive and dementia epidemiology; behavioral and social pathways of AD/ADRD; role of social, contextual, environmental, and institutional factors in AD/ADRD; early psychological changes preceding AD/ADRD onset; prevention of AD/ADRD; disparities in AD/ADRD or dementia-related outcomes; and research resources and methods for studying the determinants and impact of AD/ADRD.

This FOA supports applications for Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Centers (OAICs), centers of excellence in geriatrics research and research education, to increase scientific knowledge leading to better ways to maintain or restore independence in older persons. The OAIC awards are designed to develop or strengthen awardee institutions' programs that focus on and sustain progress on a key area in aging research related to the mission of the OAIC program.  

To that end, the foundation is accepting applications to the Kott Memorial Charitable Trust. Through the trust, grants will be awarded to support the well-being of individuals, especially through caregiving, sociological support, and education and medical services, with an emphasis on services for the elderly.

This FOA supports applications for Claude D. Established in 1986, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association represents the specialty of palliative nursing and provides support for the profession through education programs, research initiatives, and advocacy. In support of this mission, the association is accepting applications for its HPNF Certification Research Grant. Studies done in the acute-care setting suggest that care environments with a higher proportion of certified nurses have better patient outcomes. Replicating this research in the hospice or palliative care environment has potential to advance the understanding of the value of palliative nursing certification. Through the program, a single grant of up to $15,000 will be awarded to an exploratory, pilot, or feasibility study with the potential to lead to a larger-scale project that can help build a better understanding of the impact of palliative nursing certification on patient outcomes.

The Michigan Health Fund currently is accepting applications to its Healthy Aging program, which seeks to improve access to and the availability of integrated, comprehensive services for older adults and their caregivers. To that end, grants ranging from between $100,000 and $500,000 will be awarded in support of strategies and service delivery models focused on improving health outcomes for older adults and those who care for them. Grantmaking categories identified by the foundation include: Health Aging - The fund supports strategies designed to improve the health and well-being of older adults, including the development and piloting of new models aimed at better supporting older adults; the replication and expansion of evidence-based or promising models, the expansion of a current program to a new target population, or the replication of an existing program that does not yet exist in a local community and does not have a funding mechanism available; strategies that improve access to current or expanded services; projects that address the structural barriers and inefficiencies preventing various systems (e.g., education, health, social) from delivering care to older adults; and projects that address a significant issue area (e.g., social isolation) or various health disparities impacting older adults.

One of the premier foundations dedicated to improving the standard and quality of life for adults age 65 or older, the Retirement Research Foundation advocates for the inclusion, prosperity, connection, and voice of older Americans. In support of this mission, the foundation is accepting applications for projects in aging through its Responsive Grants program. The foundation accepts applications in a number of categories, including direct service projects dedicated to improving community programming; support services, education, and care quality and coordination aimed at enhancing the quality of life of older adults; advocacy projects that work to advance policy issues through collaboration; professional education and training projects that improve the skill sets and proficiency of professionals who care for older adults; and research projects that explore both the causes and tangible solutions of the myriad issues facing older adults.

The Brookdale Foundation works to advance the fields of geriatrics and gerontology and improve the lives of senior citizens. Through its National Group Respite Program, the foundation provides seed grants, training, and technical assistance to organizations working to develop dementia-specific social model day programs. Grants will be awarded to day programs for people affected by Alzheimer's disease or other dementia-related disorders. Programs must include a regularly scheduled, ongoing, social model day program and provide a minimum of one four-hour session per week (though longer sessions or multiple days is preferable). In addition, services must be made available to family caregivers and care partners, either through the applicant organization or in cooperation with other community agencies. Services may include individual caregiver consultation and support; caregiver support groups; caregiver education and training; and information and referral to appropriate health and social services.

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission seeks proposals that strengthen the nation's archival network through activities undertaken by state historical records advisory boards. The purpose of this grant program is to assist state boards to broaden preservation of, and increased online access to, historical records; develop and promote best practices; support activities that put the American people in touch with primary sources in their communities and online; promote the institutional advancement of organizations in underserved communities; and assist locally based repositories with training and tools to improve their stewardship abilities. The Commission will award grants to state historical records advisory boards to: Operate state-based regrant programs that preserve historical records and make them available online Provide educational and outreach programs, workshops, and other activities that enhance citizen and student engagement with historical records Offer scholarships, training opportunities, and other programs that support institutional advancement among records repositories, especially those in underserved communities Collaborate on projects with other organizations to address common problems or shared opportunities within a state or among a consortium of state archives Hold or participate in meetings and public forums on statewide or national archival issues.

This R21 NIH Exploratory/Developmental Grant supports exploratory and developmental research projects by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of pain target discovery and validation projects. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough in a pain treatment.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to provide infrastructure support for advancing development of specific high-priority areas of behavioral and social research of relevance to aging. The infrastructure support will facilitate research networks through meetings, conferences, small-scale pilots, short-term educational opportunities (such as intensive workshops, summer institutes, or visiting scholar programs), and dissemination to encourage growth and development of specified priority areas and build resources for advancing aging-relevant research in the field at large. Network applications are limited to the following areas: (1) Midlife Reversibility of Biobehavioral Risk Associated with Early Life Adversity, (2) Stress Measurement, (3) Reproducibility in the Social and Behavioral Sciences, (4) Life Course Health Disparities at Older Ages, (5) Genomics of Behavioral and Social Science, (6) Integrating Animal Models to Inform Behavioral and Social Research on Aging, and (7) Rural Aging.    

In addition to providing respite care and enjoyable group activities that build on the strengths and abilities of participants, the programs offer family caregivers access to services such as counseling, support groups, information and referral, training, and education. With a nationwide network of programs providing regular respite services, the program demonstrates that a cost-effective social model of adult day services can successfully address the special needs of Alzheimer's families. To that end, grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to up to fifteen Group Respite and Early Memory Loss programs to develop a new dementia-specific social model program. Grant funds may not be used to support or expand the hours, days, or service capacity of existing social, health, or medical model programs or to serve mixed populations. Applications must be received no later than June 27.

The Brookdale Foundation Group works to advance the fields of geriatrics and gerontology and to improve the lives of senior citizens. The Foundation's Relatives as Parents Program provides support for the creation or expansion of services for grandparents and other relatives who have taken on the responsibility of surrogate parenting when the biological parents are unable to do so. Funded programs must include supportive services to relative caregivers and the children they are raising, with emphasis on families that are not in the formal foster care system. Programs must also include regular ongoing support, and educational or social groups for relative caregivers and the children in their care. Up to 15 programs will receive a seed grant of $15,000 ($10,000 and $5,000 respectively), contingent on progress made during year one and potential for continuity in the future. The Native American Elder Justice Initiative (NAEJI) will address the need for more culturally appropriate information and community education materials on elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation in Indian Country. It is expected that activities carried out under NAEJI will address at least one (1) of the following needs: a) Identify, develop and disseminate information and strategies on effective collaborations between tribal and non-tribal entities to address suspected cases of abuse, neglect, or exploitation; b) Assist Tribes in the development of tribal codes that protect seniors, building on existing work to develop model codes and an implementation toolkit, and maintaining examples of tribal codes to share with those creating or updating their own codes; c) Identify and develop tribally produced elder abuse prevention resources, and other informational materials for professionals and tribal members on elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation that are culturally appropriate to Tribal perceptions of abuse and Tribal values;

The Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching will support rising stars in the academy who love teaching, demonstrate excellence as educators, and are making their mark as exceptional researchers, poised to shape their fields. Designed for young scholars working towards tenure, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship is a "genius grant" that will emphasize the balance between scholarly excellence and commitment to teaching practice that draws on new approaches to pedagogy, creating a new level of engagement for students in and beyond the classroom. In short, Fellows will be emerging heroes in their fields, on a clear trajectory to become great college educators. In its inaugural year, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship will identify five outstanding junior faculty members. Fellows will receive a one-year grant of $40,000-approximately $30,000 to support the engagement of a student assistant and the balance to be used for research and travel support. Exceptional candidates teach in ways that build student confidence and mastery of a subject; encourage critical thinking; explore foundational concepts through the lens of broader themes and global events; promote the power of learning communities beyond the classroom; leverage technology to complement the classroom experience; consider and serve different learning styles; prepare students for lifelong learning; and can serve as replicable teaching models for other educators. Selection takes place in June 2018. The five Fellows will be invited to attend the Course Hero Education Summit in July 2018, where their Fellowships will be announced.

The Administration on Aging (AoA) within the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) forecasts the possible availability of Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 funds to make three-year grants to approximately 10 entities to develop capacity, bring to scale, and sustain evidence-based programs that empower older adults and adults with disabilities to better manage their chronic conditions. ACL intends to compete these 10 grants via two options (both with 36-month grant periods): (A) Sustainable Systems Grants: approximately six grants of $500,000 to $900,000 focused on developing integrated, sustainable systems for delivering evidence-based chronic disease self-management education and self-management support programs. (B) Capacity-Building Grants: approximately four grants of $50,000 to $150,000 to build capacity to introduce and deliver evidence-based chronic disease self-management education and self-management support programs within underserved areas and/or populations.
