The Brookdale Foundation Group works to advance the fields of geriatrics and gerontology and to improve the lives of senior citizens. The Foundation's Relatives as Parents Program provides support for the creation or expansion of services for grandparents and other relatives who have taken on the responsibility of surrogate parenting when the biological parents are unable to do so. Funded programs must include supportive services to relative caregivers and the children they are raising, with emphasis on families that are not in the formal foster care system. Programs must also include regular ongoing support, and educational or social groups for relative caregivers and the children in their care. Up to 15 programs will receive a seed grant of $15,000 ($10,000 and $5,000 respectively), contingent on progress made during year one and potential for continuity in the future. Nonprofit organizations from throughout the country are eligible to apply. (State agencies in selected states may also apply.) The application deadline is June 13, 2018. The foundation focuses its funding in four areas: promoting wellness by building awareness, helping people manage their health challenges, and making health services available and affordable for all; expanding opportunities by reaching across barriers to tap the talents of every person; developing leaders by supporting the type of community service that gives talented individuals the experience to become future leaders; and embracing communities by connecting neighbors to create networks to address complex social and environmental challenges. There is no maximum or minimum grant. However, a typical first-time grant is $5,000.

Since 1991, Administration for Community Living (ACL)/Administration on Aging (AoA) has supported the National Aging Information & Referral Support Center (the Support Center). The Support Center was established to assist the aging network of State Agencies on Aging, Area Agencies on Aging, Tribal organizations, and local aging information and referral (I&R) providers enhance the quality and professionalism of their information and assistance systems. Since 2003, the Support Center has provided technical assistance and training to Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs). The Support Center provides comprehensive information and technical assistance on a variety of issues relating to information and assistance on aging and more recently programs for people with disabilities. Aging and disability I&R programs and ADRCs continue to evolve and expand their ability to provide person-centered access to information and assistance. I&Rs and ADRCs are working to improve collaboration and coordination to better serve aging and disability populations, families, and caregivers. In addition, new media, mobile innovations, and other technologies have completely changed the way individuals expect to access and receive information. To assist the aging and disability networks, including ADRCs, to respond to these and other emerging issues ACL will fund a new Cooperative Agreement to provide technical assistance and training.

The purpose of this initiative is to stimulate research in promoting caregiver health using self-management.  Caregiving is an important science area since the number of people living longer with chronic conditions is growing.  Informal caregivers (lay caregivers) are defined as unpaid individuals (spouses, partners, family members, friends, or neighbors) involved in assisting others with activities of daily living and/or medical tasks.  Formal caregivers are paid, delivering care in one's home or care settings (daycare, residential care facility).  This concept focuses on informal caregivers.

The Sociology Program supports basic research on all forms of human social organization -- societies, institutions, groups and demography -- and processes of individual and institutional change. The Program encourages theoretically focused empirical investigations aimed at improving the explanation of fundamental social processes. Included is research on organizations and organizational behavior, population dynamics, social movements, social groups, labor force participation, stratification and mobility, family, social networks, socialization, gender roles, and the sociology of science and technology.

Increased longevity continues to become more prevalent in Native American communities. This trend has placed greater demands on service delivery systems, which are even more complex and fragmented than in non-Indian communities. In recognition of this, under the Older Americans Act (OAA) Amendments of 2006, Congress mandated the support of at least two (2), and not more than four (4), Resource Centers that will focus on issues and concerns affecting individuals who are older Native Americans. The primary goal of these Centers is to enhance knowledge about older Native Americans and thereby to increase and improve the delivery of services to them. The National Resource Centers on Native American Elders (Centers) will concentrate on the development and provision of technical information and expertise and best practices to Indian tribal organizations, Native American communities, educational institutions including Tribal Colleges and Universities, and professionals and paraprofessionals in the field. Each Center must have a national focus and direct its resources to one or more of the areas of primary concern on which the center will focus which shall be; health issues, long-term care, including in-home care; elder abuse; and other problems and issues facing Native communities. Each Center is expected to incorporate the concepts and principles and cultural competencies into all aspects of their staffing, program, and activities. Additionally, each Center's activities will promote one or more of the AoA priority areas. These priority areas are; 1) make it easier for older people to access an integrated array of health and long-term care services, 2) help older people stay active and healthy, 3) support families in their efforts to care for their loved ones at home and in the community, 4) ensure the rights of older people and prevent their abuse, neglect and exploitation, 5) training and technical assistance, and 6) coordination within the university structure. Together with University Advancement, the Office for the Advancement of Research & Scholarship (OARS) is rolling out an new crowdfunding platform called HawksNest. Through HawksNest, alumni, family, and friends of the university can directly support the research, scholarship, and service projects of Miami University students, faculty, and staff. This is how HawksNest works: * Any Miami University student, faculty, or staff member may complete an online application to have a project considered for funding. * An internal review team assesses applications and posts approved projects on HawksNest for a maximum of 45 days. * Potential donors visit the site to learn about and pledge funds to approved projects. * Once a funding goal has been met, the project can begin! * Project managers use the site to keep donors up-to-date with information on the project's progress.

This FOA invites Research and Development Center (P30) grant applications in the areas of demography and economics of aging, including relevant interdisciplinary areas rooted in population-based social science research. Areas of focus that are especially encouraged are: a) socioeconomic status (SES) disparities at older ages, including geographic disparities; b) the reasons for poor U.S. performance in health and mortality in international comparisons; c) trends and dynamics in old-age disability; d) cohort trends in obesity and its sequelae; e) family demography including the demography of care and caregiving for chronic disease, disability and Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD); and f) long-term supports and services for the disabled elderly population. Applications that wish to focus exclusively on AD/ADRD should submit to RFA-AG-20-002. Center grant applications must include two mandatory Cores and may choose among three optional Cores. Centers are required to work collaboratively with the Coordinating Center to be funded via RFA-AG-20-003.  

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites applications for the next five-year cycle of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), the leading nationally representative, longitudinal data resource in the US for research on trends, dynamics, and disparities in late-life disability, and for studies of the social and economic consequences of late-life disability for individuals, families and society, including caregiving and end-of-life issues. NHATS has conducted seven annual rounds of data collection to date (an eighth round is in process) and is linked to the separately funded National Study of Caregiving (NSOC). The goals of the next cycle are to: 1) Continue the current structure and design elements of NHATS; 2) Permit studies of long-term trends in disability prevalence; 3) Enrich measurement of cognitive capacity; 4) Enhance measurement of physical activity and sedentary behavior; 5) Continue linkages with administrative records; and 6) Augment data dissemination and user support.

The Brookdale Foundation works to advance the fields of geriatrics and gerontology and improve the lives of senior citizens. Through its National Group Respite Program, the foundation provides seed grants, training, and technical assistance to organizations working to develop dementia-specific social model day programs. Grants will be awarded to day programs for people affected by Alzheimer's disease or other dementia-related disorders. Programs must include a regularly scheduled, ongoing, social model day program and provide a minimum of one four-hour session per week (though longer sessions or multiple days is preferable). In addition, services must be made available to family caregivers and care partners, either through the applicant organization or in cooperation with other community agencies. Services may include individual caregiver consultation and support; caregiver support groups; caregiver education and training; and information and referral to appropriate health and social services.

The purpose of the RRTCs, which are funded through the Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects and Centers Program, is to achieve the goals of, and improve the effectiveness of, services authorized under the Rehabilitation Act through well-designed research, training, technical assistance, and dissemination activities in important topical areas as specified by NIDILRR. These activities are designed to benefit people with disabilities, family members, rehabilitation service providers, policymakers and other research stakeholders. The purpose of this particular RRTC is to conduct research, training, technical assistance, and related activities to contribute to improved employment outcomes of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
