This FOA invites Research and Development Center (P30) grant applications in demography, economics and health services research relevant to Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Related Dementias (AD/ADRD). Areas of focus that are especially encouraged are: a) national and international population trends in cognitive aging and AD/ADRD; b) demography of dementia care and caregiving; c) economic burden of AD/ADRD; d) impact of health care systems and long-term supports and services on outcomes for persons with dementia and their care providers; e) impact of health care financing policies on outcomes for persons with dementia and their care providers; f) how regulatory and economic incentives affect access, quality and health outcomes in health and long-term care systems for persons with dementia; g) disparities in quality and access to dementia care; h) effects of population-level health delivery and care interventions on outcomes of persons with dementia; and i) national and international projections of dementia caseload, incidence and prevalence. Center grant applications must include two mandatory Cores and may choose among three optional Cores. Centers are required to work collaboratively with the Coordinating Center to be funded via RFA-AG-20-003.  

The NIA Behavioral and Social Research LEaders in Alzheimer's Disease and Its Related Dementias (NIA BSR LEADR) program supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose to use behavioral and social science perspectives and approaches for highly innovative, impactful, and potentially transformative theoretical, empirical, and clinical research addressing the challenges raised by Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) for individuals, their families, and society. Applications are welcome from individuals with diverse backgrounds. NIA encourages applications on a variety of AD/ADRD topics in which behavioral and social research can contribute, such as dementia care, dementia caregiver research, cognitive and dementia epidemiology, behavioral and social pathways of AD/ADRD, early psychological changes preceding AD/ADRD, prevention of AD/ADRD, and disparities in AD/ADRD or dementia-related outcomes.

In May of 2013 the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), with input from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), held an Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias Conference in response to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. The Conference brought together national and international experts and members of the public to develop research priorities for accelerating the development of therapies for the Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRDs). The ADRD 2013 research recommendations that resulted are part of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease. This FOA addresses the National Plan's highest priority for human-based research on vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID): to develop noninvasive markers of key vascular processes related to VCID in Alzheimer's and related dementias. The research program initiated here underscores the need to facilitate the development of biomarkers to improve the efficiency and outcome of Phase II and III clinical trials and advance therapeutic development. These companion FOAs (RFA-NS-16-019, i.e. this FOA; and RFA-NS-16-020 for the Biomarkers Development Projects) establish the Small Vessel VCID Biomarkers Consortium, and are focused on small vessel (i.e. arterioles, capillaries, and venules) VCID in vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), vascular dementia, and all mixed and pure cognitive impairment and dementias with contributing small vessel vascular disease, including such as commonly occurs in sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Awards funded under these two FOAs create a consortium and infrastructure to complete development projects as well as planning that will enable follow-up activities (to be carried out under future separate funding; for example large scale multi-site validation studies and other activities, for future FDA qualification of small vessel VCID biomarkers and use in clinical trials).

The goal of this FOA is to support basic and clinical research on the influence of alcohol on susceptibility and progression of Alzheimer's disease and its related dementias. Recent longitudinal studies have provided strong evidence that alcohol use disorder is associated with the high risk of all types of dementias, and frequent heavy drinking increases risk of both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Even moderate alcohol consumption may be a risk factor for adverse brain outcomes and cognitive decline. Although these studies link heavy and frequent alcohol drinking to dementias in aging populations, mechanisms contributing to this relationship are not well understood. With this FOA, we solicit research projects that combine diverse expertise and use innovative approaches to investigate mechanisms by which alcohol affects brain aging processes to produce dementias and influences development of Alzheimer's disease. This FOA strongly encourages collaborations between alcohol researchers and experts in Alzheimer's disease and its related dementia research

This Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is intended to promote behavioral and social research on the dementia care workforce and the impact on outcomes for persons living with Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's disease-related dementia (AD/ADRD) and their families. Broad areas of interest include (1) how economic and policy factors drive the composition and quality of the dementia care workforce; (2) demographic and familial factors that influence demand for and supply of dementia care workers; (3) training and certification effects on quality and retention of dementia care workers; and (4) the development of data resources required to study these issues.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and National Institute on Aging (NIA) intend to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for a large prospective clinical research study to determine the specific subsets of stroke events that predict cognitive impairment and dementia in post-stroke populations in the United States, including in health disparities populations, and what additional clinical factors and comorbidities along the AD/ADRD spectrum may causally synergize with stroke to result in (or prevent) cognitive impairment and dementia outcomes. The goals of this initiative are to determine the association between specific subsets of stroke events and subsequent cognitive impairment and dementia in post-stroke populations in the United States, including in health disparities populations; to identify additional clinical factors and comorbidities that may affect these associations; and to contribute to development and validation of clinical-trial ready diagnostic and progression biomarkers for post-stroke dementia. It is expected that the study design will also allow for determination of interrelationships (cross-sectional and longitudinal) among the stroke event, overall cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease and risk factors (including sex, racial, and ethnic differences), dementia-relevant genetic variants (including ApoE) and mutations (e.g. in Notch 3) previously associated with Alzheimer's disease (e.g. APP, PS1, PS2, PICALM, CLU, TREM2), cognitive trajectories including decline and resistance to decline, as well as amyloid and tau biomarkers of Alzheimers pathology during life.

The goal of this FOA is to support short courses geared to behavioral and social scientists who have existing expertise in aging research and can make research contributions in Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) with additional knowledge about the disease and related research resources. Fields of behavioral and social science research relevant for this FOA are health economics, labor economics, health services research, healthcare policy, public policy, demography, sociology, social epidemiology, psychology, and social neuroscience. Priority areas of focus include, but are not limited to, the following: dementia care; dementia caregiver research; cognitive and dementia epidemiology; behavioral and social pathways of AD/ADRD; role of social, contextual, environmental, and institutional factors in AD/ADRD; early psychological changes preceding AD/ADRD onset; prevention of AD/ADRD; disparities in AD/ADRD or dementia-related outcomes; and research resources and methods for studying the determinants and impact of AD/ADRD.

The purpose of this FOA is to provide one year of support for planning activities necessary for initiating a Phase III clinical trial designed to treat patients with Lewy Body Dementias (LBD), which include Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson's Disease Dementia. Such activities may include identifying trial sites/collaborators, designing trial protocols and procedures, and addressing regulatory approvals.

Despite established associations between white matter lesions and cognitive impairment including dementia, little prospective information is available to define the characteristics of white matter lesions and associated comorbid clinical factors that cause further cognitive impairment, ultimately resulting in dementia. This initiative will support one large prospective clinical research study in the U.S. of patients engaged with the health care system because of incidental white matter lesions found on neuroimaging, who present with cognitive complaints, and who thus are at risk for cognitive decline. The goal will be to determine the volume and anatomical features that are both necessary and sufficient to cause cognitive impairment or dementia.

The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications for the next 6-year cycle of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), which is the leading longitudinal data resource on patterns of age-related changes in the health and well-being of adults age 50 and older in the U.S. The goals of the next cycle are to: 1) continue the current structure and design elements of the HRS while reducing respondent burden; 2) establish a repository of blood samples for future study; 3) enrich administrative linkages and collaborations with genetics consortia; 4) conduct follow-up dementia assessment using the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) to update data on the prevalence of dementia including Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD); 5) enhance harmonization with comparable surveys of population aging; and 6) augment data dissemination and user support. 

The purpose of the ADI-SSS program is to provide grants to public and private entities that are operating within existing, dementia-capable, long term services and supports systems and are committed to serving populations with the most need and living with or at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and their caregivers. Successful applicants will propose services designed to address the needs of each of the three service gap areas identified in the Funding Opportunity Announcement. The grantees benefit from targeted technical assistance provided by the ACL's National Alzheimer’s and Dementia Resource Center.

The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) is inviting applications to its Prevention Beyond the Pipeline program. Through the program, grants will be awarded in support of comparative effectiveness research, prevention clinical trials, and epidemiological studies that probe whether the use or choice of drugs alters the risk for dementia or cognitive decline. Funding priorities identified by the foundation include: Consortium of Cohorts for Alzheimer's Prevention Action (CAPA) - Epidemiological studies contribute unmatched information on whether the risk of dementia or cognitive decline may be influenced by long-term exposure to specific foods or supplements. However, high-powered studies are needed in order to translate epidemiological research into actionable interventions for testing. Through the CAPA Consortium, ADDF will support collaborative analyses on dementia prevention using a minimum of five longitudinal cohorts, either harmonized or analyzed through parallel analysis of cohorts using a shared analysis script.

The purpose of the ADI-SSS program is to provide grants to community-based organizations that are working within existing, dementia-capable, long term services and supports systems and are committed to serving populations with the most need and living with or at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and their caregivers. Successful applicants will propose services designed to address the needs of three out of four identified service gaps identified in the Funding Opportunity Announcement. The grantees benefit from targeted technical assistance provided by the National Alzheimer’s and Dementia Resource Center which is funded through a contract awarded under the Alzheimer’s Disease Supportive Services Program (ADSSP).

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to stimulate clinical research addressing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and the association of BPSD with unmet physical, social, or environmental needs in persons with dementia.

This funding opportunity announcement(FOA) supports the development of PET radioligands that identify proteinopathies or pathological processes associated with the human biology of Alzheimer's disease related dementias (ADRDs). Activities supported under this FOA include, but are not limited to the in vitro screening of existing ligands against human ADRD brain tissue, medicinal chemistry support for improvement of ligand specificity and selectivity, initial screening of ligands in appropriated animal models, and radioligand formulation and first-in-human testing. Applications must include an administrative core, a medicinal chemistry core, a clincial core, a scientific governance structure, and a minimum of two research projects with milestone plans that address workflows for screening of existing and newly derived ligands against human ADRD tissue and appropriate animal models. Synergy must be evident among Center research projects and cores, such that successful completion of the aims could not be accomplished without the Center structure. This FOA is in response to the Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (ADRD) challenges outlined in the 2016 update to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease.

The purpose of the FOA is to support the structural characterization of protein species associated with Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (ADRDs) through the utilization of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) of proteins expressed in human tissue and cell sources. Studies in response to this RFA should also include the development of research tools and resources to further characterize/validate the protein species. This FOA is in response to the Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (ADRD) challenges outlined in the 2016 update to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease.

The Brookdale National Group Respite Program awards seed grants to service providers that plan to develop new, dementia-specific Group Respite or specialized Early Memory Loss (EML) programming to participants, along with support to caregivers and care partners. All funded programs must provide a social model day program for people affected by Alzheimer's disease or other dementia. Up to 15 organizations will receive grants of $10,000 in year one, renewable for $5,000, based on evaluation of the first year's activities and potential for future continuity of the program. The Reducing Injury and Death of Missing Individuals with Dementia and Developmental Disabilities Program supports local jurisdictions’ efforts to reduce the number of deaths and injuries of individuals with forms of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease or developmental disabilities such as autism who, due to their condition, wander from safe environments. It provides funding to law enforcement and public safety agencies to implement locative technologies to track missing individuals; and to such agencies and partnering nonprofit organizations to develop or operate programs to prevent wandering, increase individuals’ safety, and facilitate rescues.
