As the population of older adults continues to increase, the prevalence of diseases and conditions common in aging is expected to rise. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases, dementia, and chronic kidney disease will likely continue to be the greatest sources of morbidity and mortality, as well as the costliest conditions to healthcare systems. However, older Americans infrequently have just one chronic health condition. In 2010, over two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries had more than one chronic condition, and 14% had 6 or more chronic conditions. Disability and greater care needs associated with these conditions is leading to an increase in residence in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Healthcare costs will continue to grow, with health-related spending expected to top 20% of gross domestic product by 2025.

This funding opportunity (FOA) encourages small business technology transfer STTR research and development of commercial pharmaceutical interventions to extend lifespan and/or healthspan, to prevent, treat, and/or slow the progression of symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or Alzheimer's disease related dementia (ADRD) in human cells and/or tissue, in-vitro models, and/or non-human animals. This Small Research Grant (R03) will support important and innovative projects focused on basic science approaches to elucidate neurodegenerative mechanisms/pathways of Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). Proposed projects should ultimately aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and/or care for individuals with AD/ADRD. The program seeks (i) to facilitate the next generation of researchers in the United States to pursue research and academic careers in neuroscience, AD/ADRD, and healthy brain aging and (ii) to stimulate established researchers who are not currently doing AD/ADRD research to perform pilot studies toward developing new, innovative AD/ADRD research programs that leverage and build upon their existing expertise. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, as well as individuals with disabilities, are always encouraged to apply for NIH support.

The systems resulting from program activities under both program options will provide quality, person-centered services that help individuals remain independent and safe in their communities.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications that propose Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and/or Deep Learning (DL) approaches, collectively referred to here as "cognitive systems," that lead to the identification of gene mutations/variants that cause or contribute to the risk of or protection against the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease related dementias (ADRD) via analysis of a variety of genetic, genomic, and biomarker data that are currently available to the research community.

As an administrative supplement, the work proposed needs to be within the scope of the research or training that is already supported. Center awards and resource awards are most likely to be able to justify these supplements as they tend to have a broad content scope. Some research grants will also qualify if the current research is on a related topic. Topics may include, but are not limited to, cognitive decline in aging, caregiving, or research on the biology of neurodegeneration. Research proposed in supplement applications should have clear relevance to ADRD. The proposed work may include pilot projects, resource development, or secondary analysis of existing data. In each case, the work proposed should be feasible to complete within a one-year timeframe and with the limited funds permitted. It should also show promise of becoming a more substantial project that might attract funding.
