This funding opportunity will support a new, centralized infrastructure (U24) to aggregate, harmonize, manage, and share existing and future neuroimaging data collected in NIA- supported Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs).

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NIDA/NIMH R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nations biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs in the use of ABCD data. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on courses for skills development, particularly short-term workshops that will allow participants to explore the hands-on use of ABCD data, through cooperative or competitive approaches.

Through the program, five-year grants in support of salary and research will be awarded to highly-qualified candidates who have concluded their research training and begun their academic careers as an independent investigator in an area related to multiple sclerosis. Up to 75 percent of annual salary support may be requested, not to exceed $75,000 in year one, as well as up to $30,000 for research-associated direct costs, with incremental increases possible in each of the remaining four years.

Fluctuations in mental status occur commonly in dementia. Such fluctuations vary by dementia type and are most apparent in earlier stages of disease. However, even in late-stage dementia, patients have been reported to exhibit unexpected episodes of mental clarity or lucidity, characterized by spontaneous meaningful and relevant communication at a time when the capacity for coherent speech has presumably been lost.

The purpose of this initiative is to support projects which exploit genome or epigenome editing to functionally validate and characterize genes or variants involved in substance use disorder-relevant phenotypes. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit applications from investigators to participate in the HLA and KIR Region Genomics in Immune Mediated Diseases Consortium (HLARGC). This cooperative research group supports projects defining the association between variations in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA), also known as the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), and natural killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genetic regions and immune-mediated diseases, including outcomes following cell, tissue, and organ transplantation.

The Society for Neuroscience, the world's largest organization of scientists and physicians dedicated to understanding the brain and the nervous system, works to advance scientific exchange, support the neuroscience community, educate and engage the public, and advocate for the field. In support of this mission, SfN is accepting applications for the Swartz Prize for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience. Supported by the Swartz Foundation, the prize honors an individual whose activities have produced a significant cumulative contribution to theoretical models or computational methods in neuroscience or who has made a particularly noteworthy recent advance in theoretical models or computational neuroscience.

The program seeks to fund research directed at understanding the fundamental characteristics and biological mechanisms of brain function and disfunction, as well as the translation of basic science mechanisms into better diagnostics and treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders. Of particular interest is research dedicated to schizophrenia and/or depression. Studies that use exiting data and collaborations to accelerate discovery and knowledge also are encouraged.

The purpose of this Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative is to encourage applications that will develop and validate tools and resources to facilitate the detailed analysis of brain microconnectivity. Novel and augmented techniques are sought that will ultimately be broadly accessible to the neuroscience community for the interrogation of microconnectivity in healthy and diseased brains of model organisms and humans. Development of technologies that will significantly drive down the cost of connectomics would enable routine mapping of the microconnectivity on the same individuals that have been analyzed physiologically, or to compare normal and pathological tissues in substantial numbers of multiple individuals to assess variability. Advancements in both electron microscopy (EM) and super resolution light microscopic approaches are sought. Applications that propose to develop approaches that break through existing technical barriers to substantially improve current capabilities are highly encouraged. Proof-of-principle demonstrations and/or reference datasets enabling future development are welcome, as are improved approaches for automated segmentation and analysis strategies of neuronal structures in EM images.

The BRAIN Initiative and the neuroscience field as a whole are generating massive and diverse research data across different modalities, spatiotemporal scales and species in efforts to advance our understanding of the brain. The data types are being produced through development and application of innovative technologies in high-throughput -omics profiling, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, electrophysiological recording, macroscale neuroimaging, neuromodulation, and others. The BRAIN Initiative has made significant investments in the development of an infrastructure to make data available to the research community in a useful way. This infrastructure includes data archives, data standards, and software for data integration, analysis and machine learning. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages secondary analysis of the large amounts of existing data related to the BRAIN Initiative. The data do not need to be held in one of the funded BRAIN Initiative data archives, but the data must be held in a data archive that is readily accessible to the research community. Support will be provided for innovative analysis of relevant existing datasets using conventional or novel analytic methods, data science techniques, and machine learning approaches. Support may also be requested to prepare and submit existing data into any of the BRAIN Initiative data archives. Investigators should not underestimate the time and effort that may be necessary to curate or harmonize data.

Through the program, grants of up to $200,000 will be awarded to pilot studies that propose new analytical approaches and/or tools to modeling seizure propagation in a brain network. The foundation invites proposals that seek to test novel, unconventional hypotheses or that pursue major methodological or technical challenges in network modeling for epilepsy. The institute is especially interested in funding innovative multi-scale approaches to brain mapping and therefore encourages proposals that can begin to correlate standard measures of macro-network activity (i.e., EEG and/or fMRI) with micro-physiological mechanisms (such as oxygen, microdialysis of extracellular fluids, local field potentials, etc). Through this initiative, the foundation seeks to support interdisciplinary approaches involving clinicians, neuroscientists, computer scientists, and mathematicians able to facilitate different perspectives and supports the development of preliminary data visualization tools for clinicians that enable them to better understand different types of seizure propagation networks and better tailor care to the individual in the future.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for the Specialized Clinical Centers (hubs) of the Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network (EPPIC-Net). EPPIC-Net will serve as the cornerstone of the NIHs Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative. EPPIC-Net will provide a robust and readily accessible infrastructure for carrying out in depth phenotyping and biomarker studies in patients with specific pain conditions, and the rapid design and performance of high-quality Phase 2 clinical trials to test promising novel therapeutics for pain from partners in academia or industry. Studies will bring intense focus to patients with well-defined pain conditions and high unmet therapeutic needs. EPPIC-Net will consist of one Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), one Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and approximately 10 specialized clinical centers (hubs). The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to invite applications for the hubs within EPPIC-Net. A hub will typically be a regional medical center that will actively enroll subjects into clinical trials and studies performed in EPPIC-Net. Each hub should have ready access to patient populations with specific pain conditions and have expertise in characterization of that pain condition. A hub will additionally provide scientific leadership and administrative oversight to its multiple (2-10) satellite sites (spokes). This FOA solicits applications EPPIC-Net Specialized Clinical Centers. Separate FOAs have been issued to solicit applications for the Clinical Coordinating Center (RFA-NS-18-036) and Data Coordinating Center (RFA-NS-18-035). Clinical trials conducted through EPPIC-Net may come from a variety of sources including the HEAL Partnership, as described above, or from separate NIH funding announcements.

The Society for Neuroscience works to advance understanding of the brain and nervous system, support scientific exchange and the neuroscience community, educate and engage the public, and advocate for the field. To that end, the society is accepting applications for its Young Investigator Award, which recognizes the outstanding achievements and contributions of a young neuroscientist who demonstrates scholarly independence. The recipients will receive a $15,000 award as well as complementary registration, transportation, and hotel accommodations for the SFN annual meeting.

NIDA and the following NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs), NIAAA, NICHD, NIMH, NIMHD, NINDS, OBSSR, and NCI intend to publish a Collaborative Research on Addiction at NIH (CRAN) funding opportunity announcement to solicit applications for research project sites in service of a nationwide, multisite, multi-modal, longitudinal cohort study to prospectively examine brain and behavioral development from late childhood (approximately age 9-10) through adolescence into early adulthood. Current primary awardees will be eligible to apply and this new award period will be extended to 7 years in duration.
