Key priorities of the PH/TBI Research Program are to complement ongoing DOD efforts to ensure the health and readiness of our military forces and to support the Department of Defense Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence in its efforts to advance and spread PH/TBI knowledge, enhance clinical and management approaches and facilitate other vital services to best serve the needs of warrior families impacted by PH problems and or TBI.

To allow investigators time to plan and develop applications, NFRP is providing its strategic plan for award mechanisms to be offered in 2013 should funding become available. Congressional funds for the FY13 NFRP have not yet been appropriated, and this document is not to be construed as an obligation by the government; there is no guarantee of funding for these planned mechanisms. Areas of Emphasis: The FY13 NFRP encourages research projects applications that specifically address the critical needs of the NF community in the following areas of emphasis: Cognitive and social dysfunction in the setting of NF; Drug discovery for the treatment of NF; Heterogeneity of neurofibromas and other NF-related tumors using genomics, epigenetics, systems biology, or other similar approaches; Manifestations of NF post-adolescence; Novel disease markers such as imaging and proteomics of NF; Pain in the setting of NF.

With the generous support of a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health USA we are pleased to offer stipends in partial support of travel to attend the Fifteenth Annual Meeting of the International Behavioural and Neural Genetics Society (IBANGS).  Travel Stipend Details: A limited number of stipends are available for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty members who have held faculty rank for less than 5 years.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) supports high impact efforts to provide resources for neuroscience research. Projects should address compelling needs of broad communities of neuroscience researchers or should offer unique services that otherwise would be unavailable. Applications can propose new tools, reagents or services, innovative approaches to scaling and/or economizing existing resources, or introduction of resources to wider user groups. Projects must support the NINDS mission.

The NARSAD Young Investigator Grant provides support for the most promising young scientists conducting neurobiological research. Two year awards up to $60,000, or $30,000 per year are provided to enable promising investigators to either extend research fellowship training or begin careers as independent research faculty. Basic and/or clinical investigators are supported, but research must be relevant to serious brain and behavior disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent mental illnesses. A few NARSAD Young Investigators are selected each year to present at the foundation's annual Scientific Symposium in New York City. NARSAD Young Investigators are also eligible to be selected for the Foundation's Freedman Prize for Outstanding Basic Research and Klerman Prize for Outstanding Clinical Research. Selection is based upon outstanding research as outlined in the final progress report of the NARSAD Grant project.

Neuropsychiatric lupus (NPSLE) refers to manifestations of lupus within the central or peripheral nervous system that contribute to increased morbidity and reduced quality of life. Definitions and diagnostic criteria relevant to NPSLE have been utilized heterogeneously. This makes the reproducibility of findings and direct comparisons of studies from different groups difficult. In 1999, the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) provided revised nomenclature and case definitions for 19 NPSLE syndromes to help facilitate the adoption of standard language and diagnostic criteria in the study of NPSLE. ACR's report indicates that, according to data published by different groups of investigators, the following NPSLE manifestations are most commonly found: cognitive dysfunction, headache, mood and anxiety disorders, cerebrovascular disease, seizure or seizure disorders, and neuropathy. This RFA seeks applications whose basic, clinical, or translational research outcomes will significantly enhance current understanding of common manifestations of NPSLE in adult and pediatric popluations, including cognitive dysfunction, headache, mood and anxiety disorders, cerebrovascular disease, seizure or seizure disorders, and neuropathy, as defined by the 1999 American College of Rheumatology definitions of NPSLE manifestations. This RFA focuses on investigations of these common NPSLE manifestations and assumes the use of case definitions provided by ACR.

The purpose of the NIH Summer Research Experience Program (referred to as the Summer Research Program) is to provide a high quality research experience for high school and college students and for science teachers during the summer academic break. The NIH expects that such programs will: help attract young students to careers in science; provide opportunities for college students to gain valuable research experience to help prepare them for graduate school; and enhance the skills of science teachers and enable them to more effectively communicate the nature of the scientific process to their students. The programs would also contribute to enhancing overall science literacy. Summer Research Programs that expand and complement existing summer educational and training programs are encouraged.

The Henrietta B. and Frederick H. Bugher Foundation has joined with the American Stroke Association (ASA, a division of the American Heart Association) to support a network of three Centers of Excellence in Stroke Collaborative Research for a period of four years. The intent of this initiative is to support a collaboration of basic, clinical and population researchers from different specialties whose collective efforts will lead to new approaches, not only to improve the prevention of stroke, but to also expand upon the previous Bugher Stroke initiatives by inviting research on recovery after a stroke; including the areas of repair, regeneration, neuro-plasticity and rehabilitation.   Within the scope of stroke research, scientific disciplines may range from basic to clinical to population with bridges to translational research.  The application must contain at least two of these three disciplines.  Areas of recovery, secondary prevention, nursing, psychology, psychiatry and neuropsychology are strongly encouraged.    A focus has again been placed on fellowship training and cross-center collaboration for this new initiative.  Prospective applicants will be required to illustrate their capability to not only train fellows in stroke research, but also their commitment to collaborate with scientists outside their institution.

The Science Undergraduate Research Grant (SURG) Program is designed for faculty researchers and their students to gain access to cutting edge life science technology and incorporate it into the classroom. The SURG program's goal is to increase inquiry-based learning by providing the tools necessary to accelerate both students' and instructors' research and improve the quality of their science curriculum. LI-COR Biosciences is awarding a limited number of matching fund grants (value up to $18,400) to eligible academic institutions within the United States and Puerto Rico to be used toward the purchase of a LI-COR Odyssey® Fc Imaging System including the instrument, software, and reagents. LI-COR SURG grants are a 40% match from LI-COR with the institution providing 60%.

The Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE) program funds research and educational projects that improve ethics education in all fields of science and engineering that NSF supports, with priority consideration given to interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, and international contexts.  Although the primary focus is on improving ethics education for graduate students in NSF-funded fields, the proposed programs may benefit advanced undergraduates as well.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) plans to release a NASA Research Announcement (NRA), for Ground-based Studies for the Space Radiation Program Element (SRPE) in the area of space radiobiology of cancer and neuronal risks utilizing beams of high energy ions simulating space radiation at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) is a Presidential award established by the White House in 1995. The purpose of the award is to recognize U.S. citizens or permanent residents and U.S. organizations that have demonstrated excellence in mentoring individuals from groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and workforce. Groups that are underrepresented in STEM include women, people with disabilities, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, as well as individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds and some geographic regions such as urban and rural areas. The PAESMEM program is administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Nominations, including self-nominations, are invited for Individual and Organizational PAESMEM awards. Individuals and organizations in all public and private sectors are eligible including industry, academia, primary and secondary education, military and government, non-profit organizations, and foundations. Nominations are encouraged from all geographical regions in the U.S., its territories or possessions, particularly jurisdictions designated by Congress under NSF's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).

The Angelman Syndrome Foundation announces the availability of up to $1,000,000 (USD) to be awarded in support of research on Angelman syndrome. Angelman syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by deficiency of the ubiquitin protein ligase UBE3A in the brain. Applications in the preclinical, translational and clinical research areas that investigate all aspects of Angelman syndrome will be considered. Highest priority will be given to pilot projects to test new ideas about pathogenesis and therapeutics of Angelman syndrome. Researchers from all countries are encouraged to apply.

Established in 2011 by Granville H. Nickerson, M.D., C.M., in honour and in memory of his wife, Mary Louise, who was an inspiration to many of Dr. Nickerson's classmates of McGill's Medicine Class of 1945, an acknowledged scholar and an enthusiastic promoter of the Arts.  The Fellowship will allow a scholar to carry out research utilizing the Neuro History archival and artifact collections, the centre piece of which is the Penfield Archive in the Osler Library, and other resources available at the Osler Library, the Montreal Neurological Institute and the McGill University Archives.  The Osler Library's collections are listed in the McGill Library Catalogue and the Osler Library Archives Collection website.  

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) invites applications for the Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training (MHIRT) awards.These awards will support programs to offer international research training opportunities at a foreign site to qualified undergraduate, post-baccalaureates or graduate students in the life, physical, or social sciences; or medical students, dental students, or students in other health-professional programs who have not yet received terminal degrees who are from groups underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences research.

Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students Judges' Travel Subsidy First-time ABRCMS judges (postdoctoral scientists and faculty members) available to judge all poster and oral sessions scheduled throughout the conference are eligible to apply for the Judges' Travel Subsidy. The subsidy provides up to $1,500 to cover registration, housing and travel.

Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students Student Travel Award Application Deadline:  Friday, September 6, 2013 The ABRCMS Student Travel Award provides undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students up to $1,500 to cover registration, housing and travel (airfare and ground transportation). Graduate students and postdoctoral scientists are not eligible to apply.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) utilizes the Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) award mechanism to support the development of highly engaging cognitive training interventions delivered through computers and/or gaming platforms that are targeted to the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, autism and/or HIV Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND), with the goal of improving real-world functioning of patients. This initiative specifically supports small businesses with development and commercial experience in the entertainment software industry to partner with clinical neuroscientists experienced with cognitive training.

The purpose of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) Program is to develop the pool of a diverse group of highly trained undergraduate and graduate students who go on to research careers and will be available to participate in NIH-funded research. The program provides institutional grants to research-intensive institutions that propose well-integrated developmental activities designed to increase students' academic preparation and skills that are critical to the completion of the Ph.D. degree in biomedical and behavioral sciences.

Supports research on perception, action and cognition. Emphasis is on research strongly grounded in theory. Central research topics for consideration by the Perception, Action, and Cognition panel include vision, audition, haptics, attention, memory, reasoning, written and spoken discourse, and motor control. The program encompasses a wide range of theoretical perspectives, such as symbolic computation, connectionism, ecological, nonlinear dynamics, and complex systems, and a variety of methodologies including both experimental studies and modeling.
