"The Radiation Graphs are made from data from monitoring posts setup by the Prefectural Offices, TEPCO and NISA. I am focusing on these as they are only in Japanese and provide a different view on the MEXT Radiation Data that everyone else is graphing. Please note that the graphs do have different scales depending on the data. All Radiation readings are converted to μSv/h for consistency. Thanks & Notice Thank you to all the people on Twitter who have also been providing valuable and accurate information about the events since the Earthquake, Friday 11th March 2011. To everyone who is following the Earthquake, Radiation and Water Graphs, please note that I will usually no longer updating these files after 2011.04.09 00:00 JST. I want to thank everyone for the support and to the people who have viewed the graph page in the past 4 weeks more than 100,000+ times. I hope this has helped everyone to make sense of all the numbers floating around easier to understand. It's now up to the Government / Prefectural Offices to make these graphs to help people understand more clearly."

"Mike Carlson was at his desk when he noticed his chair starting to move. The computer monitor on his desk at Central Vermont Public Service Corp. in Rutland shuddered, too, Wednesday afternoon moving from side to side, thanks to a magnitude-5.0 earthquake in Canada at abount 2:30 p.m. that shook a region stretching as far west as Michigan and into New England. Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon reported an "unusual event," the lowest of four levels of emergency classification. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Neil Sheehan says the earthquake wasn't felt in the control room but was in other parts of the site. Yankee officials say there's no evidence of damage to the plant. Vermont Emergency Management spokesman Mark Bosma said no reports of damage have been reported. Advertisement "

Study Begins On Fault Line Near Nuclear Reactor in Chile - 0 views

  •
"Experts to assess potential danger posed to one of Chile's two nuclear facilities Responding to concerns of local residents, Chile´s Commission on Nuclear Energy is beginning to investigate the risks posed by the Center for Nuclear Studies in the Santiago borough of La Reina. The San Ramón geological fault runs through the eastern part of Santiago where the Center is located. While the reactor was not damaged during February's earthquake, residents of La Reina have voiced concerns about the possibility of a future disaster. The Director of the Commission, Fernando López, explained that there was a 1969 study on the San Ramón fault, but that those results had not been updated. While the current status of the fault is unknown, it did cause an earthquake in 1647 that affected Santiago severely. "

150 tons of water could leak from Monju reactor fuel pool in major quake - The Mainichi... - 0 views

  •
Up to 150 tons of water could splash out from the pool for spent fuel at the Monju fast breeder nuclear reactor in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, if a magnitude 7-level earthquake struck the area, a study has shown. During the Chuetsu offshore earthquake that hit Niigata Prefecture in July last year, 8.5 tons overflowed from the fuel pools of the No. 1 to No. 7 reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Niigata Prefecture. The latest study shows that the amount that would overflow at the Monju reactor would be 18 times larger.

Hanford News: Swarm of 2,000 temblors at Hanford in 2009 - 0 views

  •
"People living close to Hanford, particularly those just across the Columbia River, may have felt a whole lot of shaking going on over the past year. The swarm of small earthquakes that started in January 2009 continued periodically through December, numbering about 2,000 total, said Alan Rohay, a seismologist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The swarm of quakes appears to be over now, with just one detected last month. But during the year they were active, scientists were able to learn more about the phenomena. In February and March 20 to 40 quakes were detected, including a magnitude-2.9 earthquake measured Feb. 22. Although the number declined in April, the quakes continued at a background level."

Quake shook nuclear plant beyond threshold - UPI.com - 0 views

  •
"he nuclear power plant near the epicenter of the Aug. 23 Virginia earthquake experienced more shaking than it was built to withstand, officials said Thursday. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the North Anna (Va.) Power Station can handle shaking of as much as 18 percent of the force of gravity. The U.S. Geological Survey measured shaking of 26 percent the force of gravity at the plant on the day of the 5.8-magnitude earthquake, The Washington Post reported Thursday. Dominion Virginia Power officials said inspections revealed there has been no damage to "safety-related" structures at the plant, despite the data. Nuclear power plants are often built with a large safety margin, according to nuclear experts. The NRC has not completed its inspection of the facility and has not said when it will give approval for the plant's reactors to restart."

Quake intensity beyond projection hit 3 Fukushima reactors: data | Kyodo News - 0 views

  •
Three of the six reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant experienced a jolt stronger than a worst case projection when hit by Japan's largest-ever earthquake March 11, provisional data by the operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. showed Friday. The data suggest that the intensity of the strongest earthquake projected could have been underestimated. The nuclear safety agency stopped short of describing the finding as a problem but urged the utility to analyze it in detail. According to the data, the lowest underground levels of the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 reactor buildings faced a seismic movement of 550, 507 and 548 gals in the east-west direction, respectively, and each figure exceeded the projected level. An official at the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said that exceeding the projection ''does not immediately mean that there is a problem in the safety'' of the buildings because they still have resilience.

Power station sitting on active faults | The Japan Times Online - 0 views

  •
"Active faults under Tohoku Electric Power Co.'s Higashidori nuclear power complex in Aomori Prefecture are grounds for a reassessment of the seismic safety of the plant, according to a recent study. The new report released Monday by researchers including Mitsuhisa Watanabe, professor at Toyo University, may affect a decision whether to restart the plant's reactor, which is currently shut down, as well as the earthquake-proof safety screening for other nuclear plants. However, Tohoku Electric, which runs the single-reactor plant, and Tokyo Electric Power Co., which is building a new reactor in the same Higashidori complex, said the faults were shaped by the swelling of water-bearing strata and deny there are active faults that cause earthquakes under the plant site."

Natural Hazards to the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant | Alternat1ve.com - One Alternative E... - 0 views

  •
Prof. Kelvin Rodolfo of the Univ of Illinois' Department of Earth and University of the Philippines published part 1 of his article on the volcanic and earthquake hazards facing the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). The BNPP is in the middle of a controversy between Cong. Cojuangco's Bill to revive the plant and those who oppose it's revival. Opposition to the bill is mounting with the most noise coming from activist group GreenPeace and the powerful Catholic Church Prof Rodolfo's article shows that in the rush to build the powerplant, in order to address the serious energy crisis of 1973, assessment of the geologic hazards inherent in the site were not properly conducted. A study of that proportion would have also entailed a considerable amount of time to complete. It was found out that the BNPP, which is situated in Morong Bataan, sits right on top of a volcanic area. Early on the design phase, alarms raised as to the region having high probabilities of earthquakes occurring due to the volcanic presence were promptly ignored.

Chubu Finds More Damage at Nuclear Plant After Quake - Bloomberg.com - 0 views

  •
Chubu Electric Power Co. may burn more fossil fuels to keep lights on and machinery running in Nagoya, Japan's third-largest metropolitan area, as the utility finds more earthquake damage to its Hamaoka nuclear plant. Both functioning reactors at Hamaoka shut down after a 6.5- magnitude quake on Aug. 11 and as of today Chubu found 39 problems, including neutron monitor and auxiliary transformer malfunctions. There's no estimate when the reactors will resume operation, spokesman Toshimitsu Shibata said by phone. A monthlong closure at Hamaoka, which generated 16 percent of the Nagoya-based utility's electric power last year, would increase costs by about 10 billion yen ($105 million), according Reiji Ogino, an analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Co. For a company with annual sales of more than 2 trillion yen, there wouldn't be any serious affect on Chubu's share price, he said.

Public airs concerns over Diablo Canyon license renewal - Local - SanLuisObispo.com - 0 views

  •
"Comments at commission's meetings about power plant center on earthquake danger, fuel storage and timing of application for new license Earthquake danger, spent fuel storage and the perceived early timing of the renewal application are poised to be major public concerns as federal regulators process an application to extend Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant's two operating licenses by 20 years. The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission kicked off the license renewal process with two public information meetings attended by about 50 people Tuesday in San Luis Obispo. The process is expected to take more than two years to complete. During an extended question and answer session in the afternoon, NRC officials addressed many familiar safety issues regarding operation of the nuclear plant. If the agency grants Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s request, the lives of the two reactors will be extended from 2024 and 2025 to 2044 and 2045. Public concern centered on three main issues:"

Diablo license renewal may be delayed on request by Board of Supervisors - Local - SanL... - 0 views

  •
"Less than a week after concerns about earthquakes dominated public hearings on renewing Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant's operating licenses, the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider asking federal regulators to delay the process until more high-tech seismic studies can be completed. Plant owner Pacific Gas and Electric Co. has proposed doing three-dimensional mapping of the ocean floor off the nuclear power plant. Such mapping and other state-of-the-art analysis would tell geophysicists more about the earthquake potential of the area around Diablo Canyon. Supervisors will vote whether to send a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission urging the agency to approve PG&E's request to have its customers pay for the $16.73 million studies, which are expected to take three years to complete.
