Perhaps my favourite classroom tool of the past year is My StoryMaker from the Carnegie Libraries of Pittsburgh. It's great fun and has never failed to entertain me or my students - always the sign of a good activity. Most importantly, it really gets students thinking about language and focuses them on producing creative, quality work.

On October 10, 2010 (10.10.10), across the planet, documentary filmmakers, students, and inspired citizens will record the human experience over a 24-hour period and contribute their voice to the largest participatory media event in history. Founded in 2008, ONE DAY ON EARTH is creating an online community, shared archive, and film. Together, we will showcase the amazing diversity, conflict, tragedy, and triumph that occur in one day. We invite you to join our international community of thousands of filmmakers, hundreds of schools, and dozens of non-profits, and contribute to this unique global mosaic. Through the One Day on Earth platform, we will establish a community that not only watches, but participates."

The elements we describe in the pages that follow give you a great deal to consider in constructing your story. We emphasize our storytelling process in a group setting because we believe that most of us do not just read a book and do the work. If you are reading this disassociated from some group process, we strongly suggest you go find at least one collaborator or fellow storyteller. Storytelling is meant to be a collaborative art. It is much more realistic this way, and much more fun.
