  • Now, some would argue for the tablets or slates that connect with these IWBs.That is still one kid at a time manipulating and interacting.

I have to wonder about this. I would suggest that some teachers only use the slate as a mobile mouse. I would suggest that if you have an itouch use the air mouse or touchpad elite. This will accomplish the same task. I wonder if this would allow multiple students to use their itouch?
  • Laptops, Netbooks, Document Cameras, Flip Video, anything that gets all kids using technology and interacting with technology, together.

I would have to add to this list...iTouch. I am finding more and more ways to use the iTouch in the teaching/learning environment. The K-12 on-line conference has some great podcasts on this topic. I am also a part of a Diigo group called ipods in education that has some great resources!
  • room my school had 3 IWBs that had never been used before I got there. I had used one in my student teaching and really enjoyed using it and teaching with it. When I discovered there were IWBs in my scho

You mean the teacher still matters? | The Thinking Stick - 2 views

  • No longer is online learning just reading a module and answering questions — it can now include synchronous or asynchronous discussions and peer-to-peer learning exercises.
  • you can’t take the old model and apply it to a new medium….you need a whole new model of learning
  • “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.”
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Maybe it’s the best teachers taking the best approach, which incorporates the use of online tools to enhance the learning. In the end a good teacher is still needed.

Four great articles have come to light lately that point to research being done and what many of us in the Ed Tech community have been saying for a long time might just be on the horizon. That is that this technology stuff can improve education.

Hard to get away from this "reality"  Even providing for technologist requires finances.
  • Too often the discussions about technology in schools are driven by finances and the technology itself.
  • Once a school begins to build this culture of collaboration, it soon becomes second nature for teachers to work in partnership with the technology facilitator, bringing new and innovative ideas into the classroom, learning new ways to meet the needs of all students, and exploring the possibilities to connect, communicate and create on a global scal

Using Instant Messaging to Engage Children with Reading Comprehension | edte.ch - 1 views

  • I used the “CONTROL THE PRESENTATION” tool available to me as owner of the document.
  • if the children were to use the Google Talk client then we could be looking at a variety of different texts and not just something created in Google Presentation.
  • It is taking what the children enjoy doing and harnessing that engagement, attempting to merge and utilise the skills they use outside of school to impact on their engagement with their learning.

Least Restrictive Environment - Practical Theory - 2 views

  •
I've been thinking a lot about Least Restrictive Environment quite a bit in terms of internet filtering. If we are truly going to prepare students for college, career, and citizenship, we must be preparing them within as authentic a "real life" learning environment as possible.
  •
Couldn't agree with you more. All the worries (inappropriate, controversial, miss informational sites, etc) are exactly what students will face in the "real life" environment. In fact, they already do. They need to experience this in school as well, as this is the place they will begin to establish a set of values and acquire the skills to discern what information is valuable to them. In our efforts to "protect" students, we are robbing them of these needed skills. I would argue that the Viagra adds during the Super Bowl are just as bad. Let's move away from a fear-based model of filtering to a more pro-active model of educating.
  •
Hey Matt, a very interesting take on access! My argument has been that in locked down environments, kids can't develop ethics or appropriate use habits which are critical in life. You have to allow the possibility of misuse to test whether the ethic is in place, so this skill can't be demonstrated and is not developed in some systems. Nothing like developing internal locus of control.... much like intrinsic motivation.
