The Future of Reading and Writing is Collaborative | Spotlight on Digital Media and Lea... - 1 views

    • Rob Reynolds

      It's all about collaboration.
  • “The age of the know-it-all author who went into her room for three months and figured something out that no one figured out, and had a whole idea that was hers alone – it’s over.”
  • In his classes, Boardman teaches students how to express their ideas and how to tell stories —and he encourages them to use video, music, recorded voices and whatever other media will best allow them to communicate effectively

I believe this is called "processing" information, making understanding from what you're reading.  The physical act of reading, is not what's important, it's making sense, and constructing knowledge and understanding from what you read.
  • The boy reads for a bit, goes to Google when he wants to learn more about a particular topic, chats online with his friend who are reading the same book, and then goes back to reading.

Why Social Media Doesn't Matter Anymore | Small Business Marketing Blog from Duct Tape ... - 1 views

  •
I like reading marketing blogs because they focus on communicating and building support for new ideas--sounds a lot like technology integration and education in general. Consider this revised quote from the bookmarked blog post: "The reason social media doesn't matter is because, upon further review, it doesn't exist beyond a label. While all the categorizing, classifying and departmentalizing was going on, that which was called social media simply settled into the center of [learning] and [instructional] strategy and behavior. Everything that we called social media is irrelevant and mislabed - there's a new way of doing [teaching] and [learning] for sure, but it's a behavior and focus on [student] involvement that's become a new norm - and that's all there is to it. We don't need social media tools, social media plans, social media agencies, or social media departments, we need [instructional] strategies and [practices] that are informed by a terribly heightened [learner] expectation."

Unmasking the Digital Truth / FrontPage - 1 views

  •
The goal of this collaborative wiki is to "unmask the digital truth" with respect to the reasons some leaders today are overfiltering and overblocking web 2.0 sites in schools and libraries, and provide reasonable alternatives which support broader student and teacher access to these sites.

Khan Academy, Bringing Creativity to Class Time (by Sal Khan) - 1 views

  • Not only would it provide for deeper, more motivated learning, but a portfolio of meaningful projects is vastly more interesting for a prospective employer than a GPA on a transcript (we know because Khan Academy’s own hiring process cares a lot more about what someone has creatively produced than their GPA).
    • Rob Reynolds

Students who are looking for jobs with new innovative companies better stop worrying about their GPA and start thinking much more seriously about what they produce.
  • This liberates the rest of class time for peer tutoring, higher level interactions between teachers and students, and truly creative projects.
    • Rob Reynolds

Don't think that Khan, or any other tech tool can ever replace a teacher.  It just changes their job.
  • We played a variation of freeze tag where we changed the size of the playing field and the number of “freezers”.  Students predicted and observed how the dynamics of the game changed as more freezers were added and the threshold needed to freeze everyone.  They were quick to draw analogies to other areas of science.
  •
make projects the primary mode of learning (as opposed to something that just complements lectures and exercises)

Literacy, families and learning: Rethinking Language and Learning - 0 views

  • The above report should offer a warning of the need to avoid the 'tool' becoming the end or focus of learning. Instead, we need to keep in mind that keyboards and the Internet are simply the means for wider learning and the acquisition of, or construction of knowledge.

      The FERPA question
  • I challenge GoogleApps for Education--the organization, not the users--to speak up and share the toll-free number they have for technical support, knowledgeable support staff to respond to questions, and HelpDesk for their GoogleApps
    • Rob Reynolds

This comment does not align with the fact that "helpdesk" models have changed drastically by all software. Perhaps a place for a future business opportunity...? I would say, when it comes to seeking answers for google apps questions, I have always found the answer within a few clicks and searches. There is a good tech support sytem, it just doesn't look and feel the same as the old model.
