PowerPoint Presentation: In my previous life as a paid promotion site, I got to see any number of companies and sectors pushed and promoted that didn't deserve to be! It seemed that every week I was doing an Oil and Gas Play. Alternative energy plays were very popular...biofuels and solar, too. BUT, the clear winner over the past year has been the Lithium mining sector. I saw a succession of mining plays like LIEG, AMEL, LTUM, BHWX and AMLM parade across the paid promotion universe. It may well be, but these companies are very far away from being viable companies. The truth is I did alerts on all of these companies at one time or another over the past year. The former owners of a Milan car dealership pleaded guilty to bank fraud charges during a hearing Friday in U.S. District Court, Rock Island. Jens Hirsch, 45, and Pamela A. Hirsch, 55, of Rock Island, the former owners of Blackhawk Auto, pleaded guilty to one count each of bank fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and making a false statement to a bank. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 14. According to a news release issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of Illinois, the Hirsches admitted that with Jens as president and Pamela as vice president and secretary of Strategic Enterprises Inc., doing business as Blackhawk Auto, they defrauded Milan Bank in 2008. Blackhawk Auto, located at 1920 E. 1st Ave., had an agreement with the bank for a line of credit of $1.5 million, which would be used to purchase vehicles for reselling. Upon sale of the vehicles, Blackhawk Auto was to repay the bank the outstanding balance for the respective vehicle. The Hirsches admitted they used the proceeds from sales for other uses and failed to repay the bank. The loss to the bank was more than $400,000, but less than $1 million. The penalty for each of the offenses is a prison sentence of up to 30 years and a fine of up to $1 million. However, the plea agreements in the case will determine the final sentence, according to the news release.

Over a million new users have registered at myspace.com in the previous month, averaging 40,000 accounts activated daily. Its new owners attribute this positive response mainly to Myspace's integration with Twitter and Facebook. The ousted social network star has transformed into an online community for music enthusiasts and appears to be growing into a platform that is ready to co-exist with Twitter and Facebook. Instead of competing with Facebook, it is now going head to head with online music services like Rdio, Jango, Pandora and Spotify. Myspace is now claiming they have the biggest catalog of tracks online with 42 million songs. MySpace was purchased by News Corp for USD 580 million in July 2005. But according to Rupert Murdoch himself, the chief executive of News Corp, their purchase has been a big mistake and that it was mismanaged in every way possible. The one-time leading social networking site Myspace has reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over the privacy probe recently conducted. Myspace was charged with representing its privacy policies to its users, which brings to mind similar deals agreed upon by Google and Facebook on respective FTC investigations involving them. FTC announced last week that despite Myspace's telling users that it will not share personally identifiable data with others; it gave advertisers "Friend ID" numbers of users. This enabled advertisers to search the users' publicly available personal data such as full names and could even lead to discovery of their web activity. The terms of the settlement specified that Myspace is not going to misrepresent its privacy policies while implementing a comprehensive privacy program. In addition, the two parties agreed to a regular independent privacy audits every other year for 2 decades. Myspace had been the most popular social network since it launched in 2003 but was overshadowed by the arrival of Facebook. Specific Media of Irvine California is the current owner of Myspace after News Corp sold it for USD 35 million last year. Most of the contraction was caused by a decline in new orders among the various players in the services sector while sales and prices also fell. Just 2 out of 9 sub-sectors (namely, personal and recreational services and finance and insurance) included in the survey has grown during the month. The increased activity in the mining sector is not positively affecting the remaining sectors of the local market. The chief executive of the Australian Industry Group (AI Group) said that the contraction in the services industry just shows how narrow is its base of development in the broad market. Several stability in financial states abroad in a period of few months will be favorable for allowing consumer and business confidence to improve, resulting in a gradual increase in spending. More than half of the world's mining acquisitions in 2011 has involved projects located in US, Australia and Canada. Other buyers include China, India, Russia and Brazil, all of which increased their acquisitions by 42% since 2006. In terms of gold, the average deal is valued at USD 41 million where a premium is almost 50%. Propelling the lucrative market is Australia with 15%, United States with 14% and Canada with 49%. Considering the bigger picture of the industry, PwC seems to be expecting that this year will see record M&A valuations and volumes in the mining sector worldwide. According to the company, sovereign wealth funds tend to have more advantage in winning transactions because of their low cost of capital. PwC is assuming that non-miners like sovereign wealth funds, large pension funds and private equity might reassess their approach to the industry and begin to participate more in M&A.
