I'd chosen accessibility tools as my elective for the scrapbook, so I thought I'd share this resource which includes numerous links that contain useful information, as well as software that can be used to ensure that your course is as accessible as possible. It also includes some relevant legal information that could also come in handy! Hope you'll find it handy..

This was an interesting list that suggested social media tools to use as alternatives to those that dominate social interaction on the web. The idea behind the suggestions are that for many students Facebook and Twitter exist within a personal social sphere, and that offering a separate space for academic interaction can help preserve the distinction between the two. Tom addressed the benefits of that approach and reasons why it may be worth pursuing in his post this week in the Technology Tools class.

Piazza is designed to connect students, TAs, and professors so every student can get the help they need when they need it. Today, hundreds of thousands of students across hundreds of campuses are using Piazza for their classes. It warms me to think I started something that is impacting the way students learn and the way instructors teach.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that social media has changed more than just how we pass the time, it has now infused itself into formal learning channels. Although adoption is slow (for instance, only 15% of teachers find value in Facebook, Wiki, and other social networks), time will only show that it will rise. I think that the integration of social media in higher education has its benefits and challenges... however I can say that undisputedly it is one of the better ways of increasing communication between academics and students.

Mostly about High School but I think still pertinent.

This is an interesting article about 8th graders. It applies also to most of high school students also, but I believe that mature adults can use it as a useful tool that enhances education. For many it is nothing more than an escape from the duties of the real world. I have found it to be both "All about me" and informative. Social media does need to be taught in the classroom if it's going to used.

This is a free event coming up on the June 24th in Srpingfield. I don't know if I can go yet, but I thought I would share that we are not the only ones looking at technology's implications in teaching. I don't know any of the speakers.

Can these tools really be accessible to the 'common student'??

One of my colleagues likes to create a "Wall" for major topics in his course such as the Cold War. This takes the places of a conventional classroom bulletin board where instructor and students can post photos and web sites and their own work.

The purpose of this wiki is to organize and explore FREE Web 2.0 tools that can be used to enhance teaching and learning.

There are a couple of different programs from this vendor that will allow you to capture a screen demonstration with or without an audio track, and then create an avi output file that you can publish (see autoscreenrecorder). Also, some snapshot captures and animators.

ReadWriteWeb published this list in August of 2010 - interesting and I can definitely see the potential in the tools and tech they featured! I'll be looking into Wikispaces, VoiceThread, and SlideShare which I have not previously heard about.
