Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators. It provides educators with access to images, videos, music, and graphic all with less restrictive rights for using the material. For example, you go right from Creative Comments to Flickr images that you can use. The one caveat while searching for content, be careful not to use a different search term, because you will be searching in the regular libraries. When want search for a different, go back to Creative Commons and search from there.

Explore math with desmos.com, a free online graphing calculator. If a free account is created, graphs can be saved for future use. Lots of options for sliders.

Some of these blogs can be useful in helping us create new ideas for our courses or just to see what others are doing.

by Aimee Hosler Like it or not, American youth are decidedly online. According to a 2013 report by Pew Research, 78 percent of teens have cell phones, and almost half of those are smartphones - which means they can log onto the Internet virtually anywhere, any time.

Given the harsh criticisms that social networks commonly face when it comes to their use by teenagers, I thought it would be useful to post this newspaper piece that presents the opposite argument: Social media might be usually considered to be just places of the lurking danger of real-life social isolation (among more gruesome dangers in this context), but they could also be seen as places where a teenager can be inventive, discover aptitudes and of course develop his/her social skills. Also, it discusses research which shows that teenagers are more often than not well aware of the dangers that lie behind the (ab)use of social media.

This was an interesting list that suggested social media tools to use as alternatives to those that dominate social interaction on the web. The idea behind the suggestions are that for many students Facebook and Twitter exist within a personal social sphere, and that offering a separate space for academic interaction can help preserve the distinction between the two. Tom addressed the benefits of that approach and reasons why it may be worth pursuing in his post this week in the Technology Tools class.

Social Media Facebook and Twitter may be ubiquitous, but there are many other social media tools out there that can enhance teaching and learning. Here, three educators share their favorites. Piazza is designed to connect students, TAs, and professors so every student can get the help they need when they need it. Today, hundreds of thousands of students across hundreds of campuses are using Piazza for their classes. It warms me to think I started something that is impacting the way students learn and the way instructors teach.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that social media has changed more than just how we pass the time, it has now infused itself into formal learning channels. Although adoption is slow (for instance, only 15% of teachers find value in Facebook, Wiki, and other social networks), time will only show that it will rise. I think that the integration of social media in higher education has its benefits and challenges... however I can say that undisputedly it is one of the better ways of increasing communication between academics and students.

Mostly about High School but I think still pertinent.

This is an interesting article about 8th graders. It applies also to most of high school students also, but I believe that mature adults can use it as a useful tool that enhances education. For many it is nothing more than an escape from the duties of the real world. I have found it to be both "All about me" and informative. Social media does need to be taught in the classroom if it's going to used.

This is a free event coming up on the June 24th in Srpingfield. I don't know if I can go yet, but I thought I would share that we are not the only ones looking at technology's implications in teaching. I don't know any of the speakers.
