Measuring the Success of Online Education - 0 views

  •
Interesting read - I found the shift from taped lecture to a more interactive setting interesting... "Udacity, along with other MOOC designers, is moving rapidly away from the video lecture model of teaching toward an approach that is highly interactive and based on frequent quizzes and human "mentors" to provide active online support for students."

'Capstones' Build Academic Skills but Are No Cure-All, Study Finds - Teaching - The Chr... - 0 views

  •
Capstones, the cumulative, large-scale projects that two-thirds of students seeking bachelor's degrees complete, can carry some heavy expectations. They are seen by many faculty members and administrators as a way to demonstrate the academic rigor of higher education. Such projects require a lot of time and effort, often lasting for more than a semester, and demand substantial intellectual work.

Feedback Strategies for Online Courses - 4 views

  • If you don’t start off at the beginning giving them feedback that has meaning for them, the quality of their work slips
  • If they know that somebody really cares about what they’re doing and [makes] that personal connection, they will work to that expectation. If they don’t think the instructor is spending time with their work and simply says, ‘Oh, you did a great job’ but doesn’t make anything personal, they figure, ‘Oh well, the instructor skimmed the information,

I was amazed at how intuitive and easy this tool is to use to create quizzes. I had spent hours creating a PowerPoint quiz, and minutes to create the same quiz using this tool. Plus I had much more flexibility in kinds of questions I created--and I can gather feedback any time I want to. There is a free trial version of this tool, and then one must purchase the rights to use the tool. Try it!

You can develop your own questions, use their test bank, or import your existing quizzes. You can select the order of the questions, indicate scores for passing, will show you their score at the completion of the quiz and reveal the correct answer to the questions. Very easy to follow. Almost no learning curve. I would definitely use this in an online class to assess students understanding of concepts covered. I would offer it either as a review or as a quiz itself.

I like to use this clip when teaching students about the Fifth Amendment. It's funny and sparks a great conversation about the media/society's conception of how and under what circumstances the Fifth Amendment is used. And it's fun! Enjoy!

This is the latest episode of our new podcast series on the future of higher education. You can subscribe in iTunes, Overcast, or Stitcher. Perhaps you've stood in the front of a classroom, looked out on the room full of students distractedly checking email or Facebook, and thought: They're just not that into this.

Is Education Ready For YouTube? - 0 views

When University of California, Davis student Anthony Nguyen wants to spelunk a little more deeply into the day's geology lesson, he knows help is just a click away. All the college senior has to do is visit YouTube.com, a file-sharing Web site typically known more for recorded stunts and home-video confessionals than for educational wisdom.

Wikis in education and other tools for collaborative writing - 1 views

  •
A Wiki can be thought of as a combination of a Web site and a Word document. It provides a ready to use site with a simple user interface, ability to easily add pages, and simple navigation structure. This allows students to spend more time devel- oping the content of the site, instead of trying to learn how to make one.
