Even just in this assignment, I feel like I am getting bombarded with information from Tumblr, Twitter, Diigo in addition to what we get in e mails, texts, Facebook and Nexflix, etc. Whew. So much reading- so little time and energy.

Myspace, the social media site that started it all, announced a new facelift Tuesday. The redesigned Myspace, which turned 9 this year, is now focused more on music and is even more integrated with Facebook and Twitter. According to the site's teaser page, the company is "hard at work building the new Myspace, entirely from scratch."

Mostly about High School but I think still pertinent.

This is an interesting article about 8th graders. It applies also to most of high school students also, but I believe that mature adults can use it as a useful tool that enhances education. For many it is nothing more than an escape from the duties of the real world. I have found it to be both "All about me" and informative. Social media does need to be taught in the classroom if it's going to used.

What a great way to be able to asynchronously poll students and still allow them to remain anonymous. This also gives students to see how well their knowledge compares to other students. It also allows them to see if their way of thinking is similar to other students.

I can't believe that people still believe all these myths. However I have colleagues that still resist even limited technology in hybrid classes.

This was a very interesting article. I perused the comments and it is very evident that there is still a high degree of skepticism with online education.

This is a very interesting article regarding the lack of internet skills of students. Students still lack fundamental knowledge regarding privacy issues and the risk for their future career.

Given the harsh criticisms that social networks commonly face when it comes to their use by teenagers, I thought it would be useful to post this newspaper piece that presents the opposite argument: Social media might be usually considered to be just places of the lurking danger of real-life social isolation (among more gruesome dangers in this context), but they could also be seen as places where a teenager can be inventive, discover aptitudes and of course develop his/her social skills. Also, it discusses research which shows that teenagers are more often than not well aware of the dangers that lie behind the (ab)use of social media.

A word or phrase preceded by a "#." How do hashtags work? Twitter can be a busy place with lots of tweets-and thus lots of "noise." A #hashtag is a way to aggregate tweets that are appended with a hashtag. Picture it like a magnet that attracts all messages categorized by that topical word or phrase.

Really useful! I'm still, however, not convinced that Twitter can be useful for much else than brainstorming.. Thanks though!

A short article listing 4 benefits of using smartphones in the classroom. While I'm still not totally convinced, some good points are made here. The issue I don't ever seem to see addressed in articles like this, though, is how to keep students from going to facebook or their texts after using the phone for a learning purpose.
