This is a basic primer introducing the facilitator to online teaching. I found it helpful. Also, the supplemental resources at the end are fairly good.

Teaching social media to scientists - 1 views

  •
It wasn't so long ago that scientists had only a couple of ways to share their work with the world: publishing in a research journal or presenting at a scientific meeting. This often limited exposure to a relatively small sphere of scientists.

Twitter for Academia - 2 views

  •
For those who may be a bit unclear on how to use Twitter for a class, the article includes varied strategies. Some of the ideas have already been mentioned in our discussions and responses as we worked through the second module, but there are a few other points that may be noteworthy. Second, the article affirms some of the ideas already shared, especially for those of us who were initially unfamiliar with twitter's potential application.
  •
I'm still not convinced I want to use Twitter in my classes, but this gives a lot of good information.
  •
I must admit that when I first heard about Twitter I thought it represented the apex of what concerns me about internet technology: solipsism and sound-bite communication. While I obviously spend a great deal of time online and thinking about the potential of these new networked digital communication structures, I also worry about the way .....

Wikis in education and other tools for collaborative writing - 1 views

  •
A Wiki can be thought of as a combination of a Web site and a Word document. It provides a ready to use site with a simple user interface, ability to easily add pages, and simple navigation structure. This allows students to spend more time devel- oping the content of the site, instead of trying to learn how to make one.

20 Reasons Why Social Media Is Bad for Us - 1 views

  •
Social media has given us a global revolution in communications and interconnectivity. We endlessly hear about the big benefits of social media and rightly so, but ... what about the dark side? I believe it's important to talk about the negative side of social media especially if we want to integrate it into the classroom.

Advantages and disadvantages of content creation - 0 views

  •
Deciding whether to create your own content or access existing content will depend on a variety of factors. You will want to consider whether this course is to be accessed by a small or large number of students, over what timescale (will revisions be necessary?), will it be within one programme or across several, one institution or shared amongst many, and is the content culturally specific or to be made available globally.

There are distinctions between traditional face-to-face and online teaching and learning. Academic policies must address both contexts. As technology evolves, academic policy and practice change may be needed at the micro and macro levels to ensure quality education--in-person and from a distance. Sample policies included.

I need to read this article a little closer. We are offering our first fully online language courses for Elem and Interm Spanish this summer. Although the grad students teaching this course will make the same amount of salary as those teaching the hybrid classes, I have a feeling they will be spending a lot more time on it. And then, we have to be careful if they go to their union about the differences in compensation.

Favorite Tools for Online Learning - 2 views

Really has some nice information on tools available for online teaching.

Hi Kathy, good solid article and my favorite part related to one of the pod casts that we were assigned for Module 4 this week in our TT class. DeMarias says that the synchronous on line class should not be a literal translation of the f2f and she suggests the same concept as this article: a reconceptualization of the course all together. My least favorite part of the article was that we are developing "digital citizens of tomorrow". I totally agree but the sound of it is so robotic. :)

Best Education Sites - 1 views

  •
At Best Education Sites, we believe that many of our colleges and universities are failing their students in one crucial way - by not providing them with a rich and easy learning experience on their educational sites. As the world of web design progresses at a dizzying pace, education websites seem to be lost in the past, unable or unwilling to keep up. Anyone who has visited edu sites has probably had the experience: clunky user interface, incomprehensible navigation, ugly design, and no content of any real use for students. We are well aware of this situation, and that is why we decided to create this project of ranking the best educational websites: to try to help fix it.
