Statistical modeling tool: practical and powerful - 2 views

  •
The statistical software language R is open-source with free download for Windows PCs. It's a bit cumbersome to learn with the help manuals running to 4,000 pages of "stream of consciousness" thinking. However, it's very powerful, and will readily do things that (say) Excel cannot do. Scripts can be saved to Word documents for later re-use.

Google Apps is beginning to revolutionize education. Top Tech Tools for Formative Assessment - 0 views

  •
This website has a great list of top tech tools for formative assessments. Although they are primarily for k-12 teachers, there are many ways to incorporate into a post secondary course such as increase the complexity of questions or have the students write their own assessments. Most of these are free and and are easy to use and teach. Teachers can use these tech tools for easy and interactive formative assessments.College instructors can use these tools to measure the students' understanding of the material and assess if review or re-teaching is necessary. Small assignments can be indicators for instructors and assist in "taking the pulse" of the class.

The Internet Scout Report is a weekly newsletter of sorts that shares some excellent internet resources that can be used in teaching (subscribe for free). Every week, I find myself forwarding at least two or three resources to our faculty, and the response has been very positive.

Bricks don't make a school. People do. We are social organisations of parents, students and staff working together in the mission of training young people. What role can social media have in schools?

CourseSites by Blackboard - 0 views

CourseSites by Blackboard is a free learning management system for K12 and Higher Ed Instructors enabling blended & eLearning. I have used this tool a few times before. This is great because it is exactly like BlackBoard. With CourseSites you can do trial and error, and it's ok because students will not see it. Also, CourseSites allow you to add students, if you do not have BlackBoard or any other online learning site that your campus offers.

Adobe offers a number of free courses that can help you learn tech tools. Some of the courses are self-paced and others are collaborative. Occasionally they have an extensive Train the Trainer course. When I took it in 2016, it was an 8 week course with an additional 20 days tacked on to the end to finish course requirements. I liked the focus on the importance of creativity in education and best practices in adult learning theory. It is the closet thing to a MOOC that I have taken. If you take it, pay close attention to how to track your posts...the platform makes it a little difficult to go back and look at the responses to your posts when you did not initiate the first post.

I have used this in my classes and love it! The free Poll Everywhere mobile app is perfect for responding to polls, presenting polls, and clicking through PowerPoint presentations. Use it to... 1.) Respond to polls: Audience members can use the app to respond to the presenter's questions live. 2.) Poll an audience: Presenters can ask the audience questions and display poll responses live. 3.) Navigate in Powerpoint: Presenters can control the flow of Powerpoint presentations using a smartphone as a wireless remote. Participants Audience members or students can easily respond to polls or vote using the app on a smartphone or tablet. Aside from the app, they can respond via web browser, text message, or Twitter. Presenters Professors, teachers and presenters can create and display questions on the fly, including Q&A and multiple choice polls. Questions can be presented directly from the web or embedded in a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation. Audience responses are displayed in real-time. Great for classroom participation, or gathering opinions from the audience. PowerPoint Remote Presenters using PowerPoint can use the Poll Everywhere mobile app as a presentation clicker, to navigate through your PowerPoint presentation with ease. It has a slick, streamlined design and a set of polling controls built-in. Key Features: * Create or answer multiple choice, true/false, open ended, ranking poll, and clickable image questions. * Participants are automatically shown the presenter's current question, for quick and easy participation. * Watch results update live. * Click through a PowerPoint presentation with the included Presenter Remote feature.

What a great way to be able to asynchronously poll students and still allow them to remain anonymous. This also gives students to see how well their knowledge compares to other students. It also allows them to see if their way of thinking is similar to other students.

This is a new favorite tool for gathering feedback from a group. Feedback is gathered as free-text and compiled into a word cloud. Since the survey can be left open for up to 1-2 weeks, this would work well as either a synchronous session tool or an asynchronous tool.

This a great (free) Pharmacology Open Education Resource (OER) for any nursing faculty. I have utilized this in my classes and my students have reported positive feedback on this resource. The e-book also has interactive case studies that I have implemented too. The same company is developing a Fundamentals nursing book (OER) that is set to launch later this summer.
