Google Forms are great for quick surveys and even quizzes (provided you don't need answer checking/feedback). SurveyMonkey isn't hard, but the free version has certain limits, and Google Forms is even easier to get up and going.

This website has a great list of top tech tools for formative assessments. Although they are primarily for k-12 teachers, there are many ways to incorporate into a post secondary course such as increase the complexity of questions or have the students write their own assessments. Most of these are free and and are easy to use and teach. Teachers can use these tech tools for easy and interactive formative assessments.College instructors can use these tools to measure the students' understanding of the material and assess if review or re-teaching is necessary. Small assignments can be indicators for instructors and assist in "taking the pulse" of the class.

I think it depends on the course and the course learning objectives. Social networking may not be a tool that aids in encoding course content and thus, would be inappropriate to include.

Performance assessment, also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list. For example, a student may be asked to explain historical events, generate scientific hypotheses, solve math problems, converse in a foreign language, or conduct research on an assigned topic. Experienced raters--either teachers or other trained staff--then judge the quality of the student's work based on an agreed-upon set of criteria. This new form of assessment is most widely used to directly assess writing ability based on text produced by students under test instructions

Find the tools to be fun and interactive for grade schools but looking for assessment tools for higher education.

I hear complaints about the poor quality of student writing today as often as I read stories about the Internet causing the end of higher education as we know it (i.e., frequently). When those complaints come in the form of actual conversations with peers, instead of in print, I feel myself immediately put on the defensive.

Thanks for this post Heather. I liked that the instructor recognized that despite some challenges with using a new technique to promote his students' writing skills the energy that was expressed by his students far outweighed the "mess" that he dealt with the first time trying something new.

The lack of learning transfer is a common mantra in higher education. It's a good article for reflection. Although I've been a proponent of service learning, at the same time, I wasn't sure how students could or if they would transfer their experiences to the academic component. Now, I need to rethink my position on service learning and its impact on connected learning

I have used Poll Everywhere, Padlet, Google Docs/Forms for checking students' group work in class, but I've always wanted a simple tool that takes a second for students to complete and another second for me to check their completion but a tool where students don't get to "cheat" by peeking at what other groups are writing because they can't see what other students are typing until they post their answers!

Hi colleagues, Here is a free real-time questioning and data visualization service that is basically like clickers except with cell phones. As long as everyone in the room has a cell phone, this could be used. Or, if some students in a class don't have cell phones, small groups could be formed each with at least one phone to use. Blackboard publishes the most current service availability in table form. I love this idea and wish D2L had something similar. It's nice to be able to go there and say to a student or instructor having trouble, oh, yes, there are some status issues with that software.
