The National Association for Music Education offers an immense amount of resources for music educators, parents, and other music advocates to help enrich the musical world we work and play in. News, teaching resources, and professional development opportunities are routinely shared on this website. Additionally, you can become a NAfME member here.

Wynn Literature is a site I found a few years ago as I was looking for music for my high school Intermediate Band to play for the Georgia Music Educators Association's Large Group Performance Evaluation (concert festival). The band I had one year was unprepared to play most Grade 4 Literature and I needed help choosing Grade 2 or 3 pieces. Wynn created this list of compositions that are on the GMEA LGPE required list. It is important to double check the most current LGPE list as the list is updated yearly. The compositions are written by composers whose works have been deemed to be "Contemporary Concert Band Standards" as they have the best mix of challenging the students as well as entertaining. Some of the composers include James Swearingen, Quincy Hilliard Robert W. Smith, David R. Holsinger, and James Curnow just to name a few. The site has changed a lot since I originally found it. You were able to click on the individual compositions to get more information about the piece such as key signature, meter, performance ranges for most of the instruments, technical issues that may occur (difficult rhythms or harmonies), background on the composer and historical perspective of the composition. Since the site's links do not work anymore, WynnLiterature is a great starting point to search for literature to play at the middle school level as well as the lower/developmental bands in high school.

Purpose of this resource: This resource is a custom instrument fingering chart generator. Musical Content: This website allows for the creation of custom fingering charts for standard band instruments, as well as world music instruments, keyboards, and wind controllers. There are options for standard, student, and professional model instrument charts, and each chart can be customized to include any combination of keyholes. Different colors can be used to fill in each chart. Other information: This website is maintained for current version web browsers, and is not currently compatible with internet explorer.

Core Music Standard vocabulary to incorporate in curriculum.

NAfME has provided lesson plan examples for band that implement the new Core Music Standards.  Included is a list of resources of videos, FAQs, workbooks, guides, etc.  You need your NAfME information to access these materials.

This section of the NAfME website gives members access to lesson plans attached to standards. You can search the database based on specific content (band, chorus, collegiate, etc.), based on specific standards, or based on grade level. This area of the website also brings up relevant articles to what you are searching to give you helpful tips and/or links to relevant websites.

Hookpad is an interesting piece of software. While it does involve digital notation, it focuses more on notating chords and chord progressions and does so by providing the user options to use standard and non-standard notation. I love using Hookpad when my students are doing songwriting on the ukulele. It is easy for them to play the chords on the ukulele, then input them into Hookpad by selecting the chord symbols. They can then go in an add melodies as well.

A library of children's songs from around the world. This site can be used to find appropriate songs for elementary kids. This would be a great resource to fulfill all the standards of the general music class and include a few more under the connect and discover portions of the standards.

This is my states take on the national music standards. As an educator in Colorado these are what my district looks to for guidance on music education.

Standards of Learning for the state that I teach in.  My county's curriculum content is based on the SOLs.

However, you can purchase a subscription through the website for the standard subscription as well as students/groups subscription. You can also subscribe to two other magazines, Flute Talk and Piano Explorer. All of three magazines have articles written by music educators assist instructions and tips for instrumental pedagogy.

This is a nation wide, multiple chapters of the American String Teacher Association. Much like NAfME, ASTA give a wonderful string standards to use in lesson plans. Journals can be accessed from the site under the membership. There are competitions, conferences, instrument outreach and job posting. This is just for string educators with many resources and support around the nation.

This page provides a list of repertoire that is suitable for young bands. Along with the titles, arrangers and publisher, it provides a brief description as well as length of piece. This is a great resource with young bands wanting to play higher level repertoire. 

This PDF list of standard repertoire for intermediate bands includes composer, title, difficulty level, and description about the primary thematic and musical concepts of each piece.

It is a good resource when choosing your middle school concert repertoire.

This website was created by Jon F. Mueller, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at North Central College in Illinois. Mueller discusses the differences between traditional assessment and authentic assessment - two different concepts that have different long-term goals and outcomes for students. Mueller, a strong advocate for authentic assessment, provides various examples to illustrate the pros and cons of both methods of assessment at different levels and fields of education, while providing data and research to support his stance. Mueller also provides information and structured examples on how educators can incorporate authentic assessment (in many forms) in their classrooms.

A website to help create and utilize musical assessments. A teacher can learn about new assessments, compare state and national music standards, and learn about the most up-to-date musical research.

This site provides several useful resources for educators. It is an authentic assessment toolbox filled with tips to help teachers create rubrics, include standards in their assignments, and examples of assessments to use.

With the implementation of the new standards, it will include maintaining portfolios for each student.  This site describes the steps to creating an e-portfolio.    

30 Writing Prompts with a Music Theme. This could be a great way to incorporate Common Core writing standards into the music classroom. An added plus would be to use it to help students respond to music.
